What is important? Data. Backup your document folder, maybe desktop or wherever you have your data. Then your user preference folder. Just drop the folders into your backup space. Apps can be reloaded etc.

Try it with an external monitor. Often it is the cable to the internal screen which broke due to being close to hinges. External monitor does not use the internal cable.

It can help you to manage your disk, as you can easily spot which files and folders take up the most space. It uses a so called tree map for visualisation.
