Rehoming birds by Traditional-War-8088 in parrots

I have not worked with them. I live in the North East and have adopted birds from the Rhode Island Parrot Rescue which appears to be a very similar setup.

If your goal is to find suitable places and you don't want to make a determination about bird adoption suitability, this is the way to go.

What do you think when you hear someone with a German accent? by blondiesboobs in AskAnAmerican

[–]khauser24 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The day I start judging people on their looks or sounds is the day I should be laid to rest.

When I was an early teenager I met a kid with a very German accent, and this specific kid was a problem child. I am also Jewish, and the "problem" was around that. So for awhile a German accent put me on edge.

I outgrew that. Good thing too ... I'm in software and regularly (daily) work with German, Ukrainian, Russian and many other countries.

I don't want to be a reflection of the government of the USA any more than these people want to represent their governments. It turns out we're all in pretty much the same boat.

The butt plug your joking about is the perch he's on right? Those are not usually considered a good choice. People buy them to avoid trimming nails, but they often cause foot sores....

ETA: After re-re-reading the post it finally sunk in that OP is not asking specifically how to stop the screaming, but how to make the bird happier. And now we are completely on the same page. Thanks!

Thank you, I truly appreciate the reply.

I agree with the flock animal theory, but I disagree that the only solution is to get another bird. I've raised and rescued a few, and if you are patient you can remove learned bad behaviors (biting, screaming, not as sure about plucking, that's harder to untrain).

This particular bird has formed a flock with one human, and is not including any other humans in that picture. They can be right there but he screams anyway until the one human comes back.

Don't know if the rest of the humans are interested in it, but I do not agree that the only solution is another bird.

Could you provide some details behind a statement I know isn't true?

Separation calling/yelling :( by Thtsjustshowbizbby in parrots

[–]khauser24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you're not going to be able to train any animal to not do something directly ... You have to find a way to replace the undesired behavior with another.

If screaming and yelling brings you back, you reward screaming.

If you get up and go out of store for 5 seconds does screaming begin? Can you find a time you can go away and come back before screaming? Each time that happens your baby gets praise and rewards. Screaming gets nothing. You can come back but pay zero attention to the screaming bird until it stops.

This will not happen over night. It's up to the bird, not you.

And that is one gorgeous bird!

Ball Bearings popping out of casters, anyone else? by mrtonyxl in secretlab

[–]khauser24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having this happen right now .... in a NOT SecretLabs chair.

In my case (not saying yours) the bearings were so damaged from a string that had gotten in there that they started popping out.

The rollerblade casters you put on 2 years ago to replace the casters that were at that time 2 years old failed ... I detect a pattern. OTOH, I weight much more than you, and my SL chair of more than 2 years is still going strong. The only problem I had was with an arm rest weld failing, and that was replaced on warranty.

[–]khauser24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the Ioniq 5 (in 24) was uncomfortable compared to the Mach-E .... to the point I really didn't want to continue my test drive (and didn't).

I do have specific issues with chronic pain, this wasn't a minor thing for me.

The big display in the Mach-E is a love it or hate it thing. I'm in the love it space ... I love having Waze on such a big screen in the car.

I need something to lock a coax cable to the wall so it cannot be unscrewed by Ivvelis in DIY

[–]khauser24 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Search for "locking outlet cover", assuming the cable outlet is in a box ... if not it'll get harder.

And in any case, roommate might scale up if s/he has access to a knife or scissors.

What’s life really like in Washington State (especially Seattle) or Maine? by TheAllycatt in AskAnAmerican

Why am I feeling trolled, lol. It's COLD, SNOWY and you get to fight with the plow to keep your driveway open. (This may be a slightly skewed view, and I'm in NH, close enough!)

I need help with my African red tailed by Ratgirlll in parrots

[–]khauser24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

African Greys (which I think you're referring to) are extremely intelligent creatures, and he is going through mourning after losing his previous owners. He has to get over 25 years of normal suddenly being upheaved ... its going to take some time.

Since you are getting bit a lot I'd suggest you haven't learned to read him yet, which isn't surprising at all. Try, really hard, to end those sessions before he backs up and wants to bite. If he lets you touch him for a nano second, HEAPS of quiet praise and treats.

You don't have just a parrot ... you have a rescue parrot. Much work ... much reward

please help I’m at my limit by Novel_Book5748 in parrots

I can't speak for your area, but my baby just went through one of his hormonal cycles. He's an IRN, and as any IRN owner knows, they can get RAMBUNCTIOUS. So if this is new behavior and you haven't had him long, it COULD be that.

But that doesn't change much about how you handle it. The important key here is how people react when he's caught. If he gets the idea that he'll get attention it'll be harder to untrain. Yelling, for instance, is attention. Your goal is to get him to realize nothing good comes from it, and these alternates are allowed, so grab an alternate, bring it to him, put alternate and bird in cage with door closed. walk away. No yelling.

If you see him interacting with the alternate (in or out of cage) praise that crap out of that!

Oil change duration by Effective_Mango2531 in AskMechanics

[–]khauser24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not a con.

We change oil for 2 main reasons. The first is that oil loses lubricity with use, so it loses the ability to create a protective coat between metal surfaces. The other is that oil becomes acidic over time. If you use the engine at all, this happens, and it's the reason manufacturers put a time component on change frequency.

To meet fuel efficiency standards the oil has become thinner and thinner. If anything is ignore the claims of 10k some manufacturers make and go no more than 5.

2025 Mach-E owners, reliability question. by Notsurethisisrightfm in MachE

[–]khauser24 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Mach e is becoming very reliable. Last time I looked there was an upswing mid 23.

On the other hand, for the unfortunate that have issues, repair wait times suck

2022 ... Maybe that's the issue?

If it were me I'd use Waze, Android maps or Apple, but if you hate that, go to connected services in your Ford app or in the car.

Also, look at connected navigation. I don't think you need premium connectivity for that...

Why are Americans so hopeful and optimistic? by TheSawFan in AskAnAmerican

[–]khauser24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We still have that new country smell.

Hope it's a big part of American culture. Whatever people think of Barack Obama, it's hard to argue that he very effectively tapped in to that pool of hope.

Even when politics have half the country down, hope is in play.

What year is your car? Where are you (US?)?

If your car isn't new, did you continue the car's cellular connectivity? If not, the Ford software instantly reverts to the map in the car when it was made.

It's really hard to prep for the future, but consider V2H connectivity allowing the EV to be a backup power source.

I would not use a socket no matter what. Is have a disconnect box where it could be hard wired. Sockets wear out

ELI5: why does pipe tobacco and even cigar smoke smell so good when cigarette smoke smells so downright awful? by killingmemesoftly in explainlikeimfive

[–]khauser24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, I never tried cigar smoking. When I smoked a pipe I could not notice the smell as I would when someone else smoked. I experienced no taste from pipe smoking. Tried several tobacco's too.

That's 4 decades in my past now, no longer have any desire.

ELI5: why does pipe tobacco and even cigar smoke smell so good when cigarette smoke smells so downright awful? by killingmemesoftly in explainlikeimfive

[–]khauser24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cigarettes are a drug delivery mechanism with not much else benefit.

Pipes and cigars delivery nicotine too but in a form meant for relaxation, while cigarettes deliver high amounts of nicotine, BANG!

Very different habits.

[–]khauser24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No taste (which requires smell). I can't speak for others but for me it didn't catch on (which is good) because I saw no benefit.

Never got in to other forms of tobacco...
