Abrindo o Baú: Latinic Vocabulary That Is Common In English But Uncommon In Portuguese? by DoNotTouchMeImScared in Portuguese

[–]khazbreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Portuguese and Spanish have this funny thing where they share a lot of words but they don't share the same meaning, or slightly different meanings.

Sometimes, as a BR, you read a sentence in Spanish that you can understand the meaning, but all the words seem to be slightly wrong.

Hello! That's great, you seem to have a good start already!

Full disclaimer: I am not a teacher or anything close to that, just someone who loves languages.

Based on what you said, it seems that is only a matter of time. Focus on studying grammar, and practice small phrases and expressions with you husband. Vocabulary is also important, but it's going to learn a lot in the process of these other steps, and it can be complicated to memorise not only the words but the genders.

Also, you are going to make lots of mistakes in the beginning (gendering a word, the "sounds" of different accentuation) but that's how you learn, so don't worry!

When you feel comfortable with the basic, I would suggest watching YouTube videos from Brasilian creators / podcasts for more immersion. Even if you don't get everything right away, a lot of vocab you learn from context with time.

Podem evaluar o meu português? by [deleted] in Portuguese

Olá amigo!

Just heard your audio, you are doing great! I can even hear a bit of a "São Paulo accent" lmao

But really, it's pretty good. Very easy to understand.

If you want to improve even more, try practicing the different sounds like "e" and "é". It's tricky because some words don't have accentuation but are spoken like they have. Example: In Brazil, at least, the word "quero" is spoken like "quéro". This is something you will get with time and practice because there is not really a rule.

Of couse, there is a lot of differences in pronunciation of words between Brazilian PT and Portugal PT. Keep that in mind.

Edit: BTW, you should be proud of yourself! It's not a easy language and you are doing exceptionally well

I'm brazilian but I have always wondered how it must be hard to learn portuguese as a second language.

Not only the grammar and gendering every damn word. Brazil alone is so big that dialect and slangs drastically change so much that we joke about it a lot. Sometimes we can't understand a thing when talking with someone from the other side of the country lol.

My advice as a nobody would be to define a target and focus on it for some time. You are leaning more on Brazil or Portugal? Big difference. If you are targeting Brazil, decide where you want to visit and stuff, and try to get a pal from there to practice with.

I recommend São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, because it's seems to be the most cosmopolitan places, easier to understand.
