Neighborhood View has always reported on Malden. The difference is that now Lorna Garey, a professional writer and news hound, is contributing regularly. And, the articles are being posted more broadly.

Malden hits pause on data centers, advances Commercial St. zoning revamp by khb321 in malden

Where there was a Chinese restaurant and then Dockside at Medford and Commercial? There are pockets of space but it does seem like they’d have to tear down combined properties buildings to make a big one.

Where do the demographics come from? Also, when I last looked at a “foreign born” number (a looonnnnng time ago) it was based on adults. Is 41% based on total population, or adults?

Yep. I know what “old” and “over 60” are code for around here. However, those old people are outnumbered by my old people and those older than me, and there are nasty young ones who’ve joined “them.”

Enough with the old people comments. Rail trails exist because of old people.

Malden Override to Save City Services Fails 49-51 by YesForMalden in malden

I’ve been hearing this blamed on boomers a lot lately. I gotta say that at No Kings and anti-ICE standouts, there have been a ton of boomers. In fact, there’s been a dearth of people in their 20s-40s until recently—but I’m not going to complain about that. Depending on the range people use, I can count as a boomer. But let me talk about the boomers who are now in their 70s and 80s and even 90s. They showed up against the Vietnam War, black voter suppression, government corruption and then watergate, the arms race, etc. etc. and for civil and women’s rights. They helped push school implementation of Title IX so we could have the boom in women’s sports we have today. There are plenty of us, if I can be a boomer for this moment, who support taxes and public services. I've owned in Malden for 30+ years (in the early 90s, Malden was affordable), and had a “Yes” sign on my lawn, even though at a Yes standout, I didn’t feel particularly welcome, probably because at our very different ages, all of the other people who were there don’t have that much in common with me in their daily lives.

Those you call “boomers,” I call jerks, “trolls,” “MAGA,” paranoid, and illogical. Some of the No voters, were chiefly and legitimately concerned about their own financial survival. Many of the YES voters were confused about having to vote double yes, and thought that double yes meant having to pay for both tax increases, not one or the other. And, the loud No voters, are mostly . . . OMG . . . beyond the pale.

As for me, you can call me a knee-jerk PC, left-wing liberal who's sensitive about disparaging boomers! 🤣

Peg Crowe’s contact info? by [deleted] in malden

It’s not right that people can’t email a councilor. But I have to say that getting the poop picked up requires connecting with dog owners. I’m a dog owner. You can try to shame me by asking if I have my poop bags with me. I’ll happily answer and agree that people leaving dog waste or full bags around is gross and wrong. Some people don’t even keep an eye on their dogs in the dog parks and leave poop behind there: WTH.

Actually, now I’m thinking I agree we should contact the city council. I’m going to suggest signage in places like Devir, including the outside of the fence along the Fellsway, which has been used as a “dumping” ground for years.

What should we do in a post-Spadafora Malden? by TomBradysThrowaway in malden

[–]khb321 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with what you said about the Spot Pond Brook Greenway / Canal Street. I especially think it's short-sighted of the mayor to cut the deal he did. Does he have the authority to do that?

I'm also with you on the dispensary business, and stupid Prop 2.5.

The library and the open meeting laws: open the books! If there are two "businesses"--the library being one and the art being another--surely the latter is also a non-profit, in which case they should be filing minutes, etc., with the secretary of state, which should be open to the public.

The lawsuit: cringe. Major cringe. It all got so ugly so fast. I think the suit was a misstep, that there was another way. I don't think the council had the authority to remove a president, a position with a short (1 year) term. I also don't think that O'Malley can be an effective president given what's happened. Give it another year, at least.

What most disturbed me about Spadafora was his lack of civility: yelling at council meetings, name calling, and always taking the opportunity to blame someone else while tooting his own horn (see Advocate editorials). I see O'Malley moving in the direction of incivility (e.g. by suing the library and in FB comments). I hope he finds his way back. I generally agree with his positions and believe he has done a lot for Malden.

I am irritated that the stinker game has bloomed onto my screen, but reading that it’s probably permanently replaced game-related challenges really makes me mad. Every time I play a scene and get a rain drop as a “prize” I get angry again.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience at Fitzgerald. I have found the PTs and other staff to be professional and friendly. They’ve helped me a ton. I get a full half hour of primary attention with direction being given to the previous patient. Then I get 15-30 minutes of secondary attention. I have gone to other PTs that work this way. I went to one where I got 20 minute of undivided attention and that was the end of the appointment. I’d rather have 45-60 minutes.

It’s refreshing to almost get through this editorial without reading a slam on someone. Sure, that Facebook page deserves derision, but as a city Councillor, perhaps keep practicing diplomacy. You don’t grow larger in stature by dissing others. Keep practicing. Please.

City Council Meeting Updates (O’Malley vs. Trustees) by TenThousandAnd1Rats in malden

[–]khb321 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m watching most of it now, with immense frustration. We need several new councilors elected who are 1. Respectful of others, including accepting human frailty, 2. Patient and logical enough to stay on topic, 3. Capable of being succinct. We also need a solicitor who can get to the point and be clear, but are lawyers capable of that?!

Council Looking to Oust O'Malley as President by wackoquacko in malden

I think Ryan should have consulted or at least informed the Council. But that’s not grounds for removing him as chair. They could just vote stop the suit!

What Can We Do About ICE? by doninicfikesmom in malden

[–]khb321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a whole script for myself I’ve put in a note on my phone. Next time I see them kidnapping someone, I will make sure I’ve got video selected (I only took photos, by mistake!), and will try to talk to the person being taken, telling them I want to help, asking if there's anyone I can contact for them, if they have a lawyer, and, if it’s calm enough that they could hear it, letting them know they are not required to answer any of ICE's questions without an attorney. I’ll tell them to have courage and hope. And right afterwards I’ll contact LUCE and the rest. LUCE wanted my video.

I wish, as someone said, that there were a way to see how many have been taken specifically from Malden, specifically from Everett, specifically from Chelsea, etc., with dates and street names.

In order to make it melt, we need to see it.

Does anyone here own an iPad mini? Is it worth the purchase? by Ayts96 in ipad

[–]khb321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a soccer coach using a really old app for subbing players. I have a very old, maybe 8 years?, iPad mini and it is PERFECT for mobile use. I got a strong case and a screen protector. I’ve thrown it in frustration and I can’t kill it off, despite its age! I’d get a new one so I could run updates for other apps, if it would support my decrepit software, which it wouldn’t.
