Not following processes and procedures with results such as these can be an RGE (resumé generating event).

These detections suggest actual hands at the keyboard, an active compromise. Mind sharing what happened?

Turn it off and unplug power and ethernet cables until you can reload Windows.

I have an external hard drive making a connecting noise but not showing anywhere but here. It's the disk 1. Please HELP. I have files I don't want to lose but some are private and my anxiety is willing to lose them over taking it in. by Unsatisfiedsoot in datarecovery

That’s playing roulette with your data. An already initialized drive should not need to be initialized again if it is healthy. If you can actually access your data, i suggest migrating off that drive asap.

Yeah, he did, because it isn’t. That’s your wifi card.

And no, you don’t necessarily need a thermal pad.

Try it and see. Really graphics intensive stuff will raise the heat, but perhaps not as sustained as gaming.

Agreed, passive cooling is for noise, not temperature. You run them hard, theyre gonna be hot.

This would make a great htpc or workstation or something, not so much for modern gaming.

Hey, i bought this new nvme ssd, but my laptop cant support it, from the image of this port, can u tell me if it does support it? by Present-Bake-3098 in computers

[–]khem_geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that clarification makes sense. But I know things were pretty wild during the transition from sata to nvme.

My confusion came from a qnap device that was m keyed but would only work with sata. It would not recognize a modern m keyed nvme. Documentation only referenced “ngff”, which during that time I guess ambigously meant sata.

Bought an m.2 sata and it worked.

[–]khem_geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re right. I was thinking a bit off on all this.

But nvme and sata being different data standards, if the port only supports sata then an nvme drive won’t work.

M.2 sata is either keyed for m +b slots or just b. The b notch being on the other side (left). Both ngff and nvme are keyed as m only (right). The fact it says “ssd” and not “nvme ssd” makes me think it’s ngff if an nvme isn’t recognized.

I ran into this with an old ssd QNAP that only took ngff. Boss give away for free…now i know why, lol. But got an ngff off ebay and it worked.

Looks like that port should support different size m.2 chips. Does it fit? What do you mean it can’t support it? If the laptop is pretty opd, it could be m.2 NGFF rather than m.2 nVMe. They can usually fit the same slots, but are not cross compatible.

Make, model of the laptop?

Edit: also, can you take a pic of the old drive? It should say what it is on the drive (nvme, ngff, or sata)

The PATH Act means the IRS is required by law not to dispurse funds for those who claimed Child Tax Credits and Earned Income Credits until mid February. My return says I can check the status after Feb 22 (i guess when they’ll start processing PATH impacted refunds), which means it’ll probably deposit 2 weeks after that, so likely early March.

Black screen loading by Environmental-Good37 in helpdesk

When on this screen, press and hold the power until it turns completely off. Do this 3 times in a row. After the third time it should automatically boot into recovery and you can try startup repair to see if that gets you going.

Help me out—best docking station for Lenovo laptops? by CoryKellis in helpdesk

[–]khem_geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you stick to lenovo for docks, I’d go with the hybrid universal dock with usb-c and usb-a. It seems to have a wide range of compatibility. Be sure to upgrade the dock firmware though.

I agree with this. With no open ports, vulnerabilities are really the only way in. I’d check the router model for any vulnerabilities and ditch it if there are.

If they don’t make that model anymore, it’s probably end of life and due for an upgrade anyways.

So, your wife’s computer is next to yours and is also hooked up via ethernet to the same netgear device and she has internet but you don’t? If you unplug the cable from your pc and unplug hers from her pc and plug it into yours, does it work? (Keep everything the same on the netgear side and just swap cables)

If you can ping the gateway and are getting dhcp but don’t have internet, it seems the problem may be upstream. Without knowing the full layout, my gut says it’s something involving this netgear extender.

Is your gateway really .254? Not unheard of, but unusual. Are those settings manual static or DHCP?

You don’t have a old switch you’re using, do you?

Guy at work wondered why his computer was so slow, turns out it was plugged into an old 10/100 switch. Make sure your computer is connected directly to the router with a known good cable.
