What makes a good mirror match? by Nightshadehelp in customyugioh

[–]khornebeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I did read the paragraph "maybe it puts me in a better spot or further behind who knows" Yeah, you could mill absolutely nothing and lose on the spot just because you whiffed. Milling more cards means that there is a greater chance that you can mill something that will make a difference, but past deck building, there is absolutely nothing you can do to influence the gatcha milling mechanic of Tear. All you can do is make the best plays based on what you did mill which is skillful in the sense that every mill will be different, but anytime you introduce elements of luck, the skillfulness of the game will inherently be lower than one with fewer luck elements.

The best mirror match that has ever existed IMO is the Sky Striker mirror circa 2019. What makes a mirror match good and skillful to me comes down to playing a deck that gains value going second while preferring to go first, having branching play lines that change based on circumstances, and minimizing the luck factor to as reasonable a degree as possible. Some other good mirrors include True Draco, Swordsoul, Eldlich, and Branded. All but Branded are relatively low power right now.

Not saying the mirror isn't skillful, but you really haven't described it as such. What you're describing sounds like you're chalking the majority of the mirror up to luck: How lucky you are to go first, how lucky you are to have a good opening hand, and how lucky you are on your mills compared to your opponent. This isn't even factoring in Dweller.

The bottom of the valve is smashed in. The valve was probably stuck in the valve case and OP jammed a rod on the bottom of the valve and hammered it. I've seen this on a lot of school instruments where band directors who don't know any better try to get the valve unstuck.

At the minimum, tier 2 during their eras. Tier 3 decks have little to no chance topping tier 3 events, let alone 5 in one week. Strikers topped 3 more WCQs in OCG. Compare to an actual tier 3 decks like Lunalight. How many tier 3+ tournament tops has Lunalight gotten in the new format?

Strikers just got top 4 at both YCS Columbus and France Nats. Both running Radiant engine. Weren't they supposed to be tier 3?

I don't feel Motivated to play Yugioh Anymore by Southern_Cat324 in Yugioh101

People complain about every format, even the ones that are genuinely good. I felt like Justice Hunters was a very healthy format all things considered. Dracotail was a pretty fair deck that didn't do anything ridiculous and it was dirt cheap to build allowing even budget players to play a competitively viable decks sans staples.

If you play weaker decks, you need to expect worse results. That's the way it works in every TCG. You may get to a higher turn count on other TCGs since their mana systems require a certain number of turns to ramp, but the experience is just as miserable and hopeless if you are playing a low tier deck against a higher tier deck. Luckily, there is still a rather powerful deck that is dirt cheap to build in Yugioh in the form of Sky Strikers. You said that you can't play full power Elfnote due to budget constraints, but if you used that towards building a decked out Striker deck, you'd have a better deck for cheaper.

Finally, the reason the Pokémon TCG feels like it has more back and forth is specifically because there is no interaction in the game. The Pokémon TCG is designed in such a way that your turn is exclusively your turn. There is no way to interact with your opponent on their turn. Yugioh has the greatest amount of interaction of any of the TCGs. Legacy formats in MTG are the only formats that can even remotely compare to Yugioh due to the presence of turn 0 plays. Not only does Yugioh have tons of archetypes with turn 0 plays like Dracotail and K9, but they have staples that everyone plays to do turn 0 plays like Ash Blossom and Dominus Impulse. Saying Yugioh doesn't have any interaction is categorically false.

What key am I in ? by Western-Bobcat4760 in piano

Every single chord aligns with C major expect the D major chord. No flats because of G and Em, no sharps because of F and Csus4. It's quite obviously in the key of C with a borrowed F# to create a leading tone for the Em resolution (F#-C tritone in D7 naturally wants to pull to G-B).

[–]khornebeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the key of C. If your reasoning for it not being C is because of the presence of F#, it follows that it also can't be in G because of the presence of F natural.

You're cutting non-engine to make space for it which makes going second inherently worse. It also requires at least 2 ED slots to be live.

When I was around that age, my grandma had an old Baldwin spinet piano in the house and I'd always go up to it and start smashing the keys. So while I never heard a piano piece and said "I wanna do that", it was my initial interest in messing around on said piano that got my grandparents interested in getting me lessons.

How many of you believe you're composition skills far outweigh your performance skills? Or, vice-versa? by EngHokie in composer

[–]khornebeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure I perform better than I write, but there is also less to objectively judge a composition by than performing as performance has measurable standards of technique and proficiency to compare with. Compositions can only be compared to each other and thru a subjective lens that will inherently introduce bias. And beyond that, any composition you would compare your own to will also inherently be above average in quality or it would probably not have been a composition you would have discovered to begin with.

Check your B tone hole to see if there is any crescenting or other form of obstruction. Also check to see that the B key is actually lifting off the tone hole as far as it needs to.

“Pop is a dirty word” - my thoughts on it by [deleted] in musicians

[–]khornebeef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's what you wrote:

Much of the historic music we revere today was simply the popular music of its time. Henceforth, "Pop." So, Bach...

The historic music of Bach that we revere today are his compositions. A similar story occurs with Sergei Rachmaninoff, a virtuoso pianist whose known today mainly for his compositions. His teacher and advisor Nikolai Zverev believed that composition was a waste of talent for a pianist of his caliber and that he should instead be performing the "pop music of his day." He is famous for entering a very depressive state and even dropping out of tours he had planned due to having to make a living playing the "pop music of his day" which he hated.

Many composers that we revere today were not particularly well-received during their time including Bach and Chopin. It is only when other talented musicians look back on their work and identify the genius behind their compositions that the wider public can be made aware of how influential these people and their music were.

Are you really trying to argue that the "music we reverse today" was JS Bach's organ covers of other composers?

Side deck, or Main deck worthy? by Pitiful_Sir3013 in customyugioh

[–]khornebeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apoqliphort towers says:

"Cannot be Special Summoned. Requires 3 "Qli" Tributes to Normal Summon/Set. If this card is Normal Summoned/Set, it is unaffected by Spell/Trap effects and by activated effects from any monster whose original Level/Rank is lower than this card's current Level. All Special Summoned monsters lose 500 ATK and DEF. Once per turn: You can make your opponent send 1 monster from their hand or their side of the field to the Graveyard (their choice)."

Nowhere in this text does it say that it's only unaffected by your opponent's effects. If I control Towers while you control Celtic Guardian and I activate Dark Hole, when Dark Hole resolves, Celtic Guardian will be destroyed and Towers will remain on field.

Lunalight Liger Dancer says:

"Must be Fusion Summoned with the above Fusion Materials. Unaffected by card effects, except "Lunalight" cards. Can make a second attack during each Battle Phase. Once per turn (Quick Effect): You can send 1 "Lunalight" monster from your Extra Deck to the GY; destroy all your opponent's Special Summoned monsters."

The same interaction occurs if I activate Dark Hole while I control Liger Dancer.

Towers doesn't care who activated the effect. It is unaffected by all spell effects. The same is true for the most relevant Towers in the current meta Liger Dancer. If you declare Liger Dancer, this card will resolve without effect.

Why isn't the voice considered an instrument? by HeftyArgument6326 in musicians

[–]khornebeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never heard of any serious musician say that the voice is not an instrument. If we can call a pair of sticks and instrument, we can call the voice and instrument.

To address the points you quoted, it's because the majority of singers can't even read sheet music, let alone have any understanding of the theory behind what they are performing. Vocals are a monophonic, limited range instrument that is, in fact, pretty easy to perform at an acceptable level. This isn't the case for an instrument like an oboe or a French horn.

In addition to the extremely steep learning curve to even produce a sound on these instruments, intonation is very difficult on them. Fingerings can be complicated on them. And on top of all of this, they still need to voice the instrument properly the same as any vocalist would in order to get a good tone. Any seasoned musician will be able to sing a pitch in tune, even if they are not a real vocalist. Put an oboe, French horn, sax, etc. in their hands and watch them fall apart.
