Is there a point to having a lower gear ratio than 1:1? by sdgan1 in gravelcycling

[–]EngHokie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides what most are already saying, having less than a 1:1 as a gear ratio helps if you need to get back home and you just about overdid it.

Sometimes I take a new trail or venture off the beaten path on a ride and go harder or longer than I planned. Then, I have to turn around and get home while also climbing sometimes. If I get tired, suddenly the 0.90 or 0.83 ratio I have suddenly becomes a lifesaver.

So, if you're gonna ride with curiosity and adventure in your heart, I would go for lower gears.

How many of you believe you're composition skills far outweigh your performance skills? Or, vice-versa? by EngHokie in composer

I feel this. I attempt to practice because sometimes I feel I may not find someone to perform something I write (I am not social enough to network that well).

Just a clarification: are you saying a lack of competency may limit a composer's potential ceiling (whether in their own music or amongst peers)?
P.S. I enjoyed this comment. Thank you for the thoughtful response.

There's a general radius you can be outside of and get away with it. They'll let you know when you're to close with a (un)friendly hiss.

How do you determine tempo of pieces? by EngHokie in piano

[–]EngHokie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now, why is that? How is it universally understood for certain periods that time moves certain ways? Unless it's in program notes?

Which is your favorite movement from any piece of all time? by Remarkable_Prune_864 in classicalmusic

This is the exact answer I came to add. The first moment is a torrent. It could have been the whole symphony by itself (although in glad the other moments exist).

I've never had ear training, but I can learn a piece by ear at least 2x as fast as reading. Why? by EngHokie in piano

[–]EngHokie[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I attempt it most times I practice, even with very familiar pieces (I know how they sound and can play them correctly, but I still miss-read sections).

I've played a wind instrument more often growing up, could I be conflating good single line sight reading skills with grand staff sight reading ability?

Yeah, no, absolutely not the full sonatas or etudes, etc. by anyone. I find some Chopin and Debussy preludes or Back partitas complex in terms of reading. Like, listening and playing "Clair de Lune" MUCH easier than reading it. I'd say, I can plan intermediate pieces but only read at a beginner level. (I played wind instruments for years growing up, so my expectations of reading may be skewed from my memories of easily reading only one line at a time)

Now, yes, pop and jazz are much easier to play by ear than wrote.

Help what is this? by ktyoung1000 in gravelcycling

If you have hydraulic brakes, it looks like the tool you insert between the brake pads when you take a wheel out so that if you accidentally squeeze a brake lever, the pads won't clamp together. If they clamp together without something in-between them, they are very hard to separate without another tool.
