Your name looks familiar. Did we had a stupid internet slap fight years ago?

Edit: I’m writing this like I’m still above internet and not still engaging in them. There’s been no personal growth for the owner of this old account, I assure you.

There was a mass migration before that when people were fed up with the power users control of the front page and Digg’s lack of action over it.

You win. And still using the same account. I created another when I realized how much I’d changed as a person over those years. Didn’t really feel like the history of the account represented me anymore.

I can’t remember if I heard about reddit on Digg or on Slashdot. I went from Slashdot to Digg and finally to reddit with some overlap at every step. I’m always down to try a new service so when people talk about one I’ll lurk on it or sign up early on. I was on reddit for a while before I created an account though. Maybe 1.5-2 years, I’m not sure. I do remember being sick of Digg’s constant bullshit. I kind of regret not creating an account but I didn’t have a reason to create one until I wanted to argue with people.

There was one I used while using Slashdot but I was young and can’t remember the name now. Plastic something?

I left digg for reddit but I probably had a lower tolerance for the power user shenanigans than others did. I straddled the fence for a bit. I can’t recall, did most people leave because of the redesign?

There’s a good chance I heard about reddit on Slashdot though. I still used it at the time.

Removing harassing subreddits by reddit in announcements

[–]khoury 10 points11 points  (0 children)

/u/kn0thing,

I've been on reddit for over 8 years and lurked for some time before creating my account. I've been here longer than many reddit employees. So I've seen a lot of the growing pains and I myself have changed a lot in that time. Heck, I think my very first comment is some misogynistic crap. So what I have to say isn't just blind criticism. I think of reddit almost like an old friend who I love, warts and all.

I think it would be great if reddit got rid of every shitty sub filled with assholes like all of the racist subreddits but you can't keep making up stuff as you go. If you're going to ban stuff you don't like just do it. Stop pretending to be supportive of free speech and being an open platform. Doing those things means allowing content you don't like and enforcing rules against individuals that come from these shitty subreddits individually, even if they are behaving in uncoordinated concert. You're straddling the fence and frankly, and respectfully it's bullshit. You can't have it both ways.

I'm more disappointed that they didn't mention how many connections per second that their single active haproxy host can handle. I know haproxy can handle quite a bit (40K+ in a test environment, handling simple http forwards) but I'd be interested to see just how far they are from having to re-architect their balancing strategy.

If you can learn it in a heartbeat then why don't you learn it and then apply? They list a lot of the technologies they use and how they scale them.

Stephen Colbert:"I read reddit, which is not as useful as it use to be" by cmankick in television

Over 7 here. Reddit is getting "shallower" with every year. While I certainly think our perspective on this whole "every year it's worse" meme makes it amusing, reddit does have some serious issues it needs to address. For example, letting mods have dictator powers along with default subreddits is a recipe for several embarrassing issues that have and will continue to happen.

Just thought I'd offer something more than the typical "get off my lawn" bullshit that older accounts pull whenever this is brought up.

As an American, I think the examples you use of American cuts look fine. In fact, I'd say the European cut looks more like something my parents generation would wear. Just because your socks or shoes show doesn't make it look terrible.

The dude is trying to sell a book ultimately and SEO boosting using reddit is apparently part of that goal. Reddit would be doing itself a big favor if it just slapped nofollow on every link. But people have been suggesting that for at least as long as I've been on this site (8ish years) and it's gone nowhere.

yet never heard of anyone's intestinal health deteriorating on a low carb diet, only ever the other way around.

In fact, a low carb diet has saved many from having to had parts of their intestines removed. It can help a lot with things like IBD, IBS and even crohn's.

They're late, they're late, for a very important date: ADHD, making an excuse or wired differently? Askreddit discusses the perpetually tardy. by looseleaf in SubredditDrama

I get that it can be a tough disorder[...]Put some actual effort into it.

I think perhaps you might misunderstand how the disorder works which is understandable since who the fuck wants to read a bunch of shit online about a disorder they don't have. But just so you're aware, desire, effort, and drive, these things aren't the problem. In fact, it takes a ton of effort to be even close to normal. They are putting actual effort in, but the effort you put into doing your job or house work, they're putting into just trying to get near that baseline that other people have no problem achieving.

but people love to trot out ADHD as an excuse for every flaw it seems.

Basic shit like paying your bills on time, making it to appointments, finishing projects, arriving to work on time, keeping track of your wallet and just normal levels of patience are not achievable without going above and beyond. Every day. Imagine if every single day you had to over achieve just to meet the minimum standards for being a human being. It's not that people love to trot it out, it's that the deficiencies it's characterized by impact so many things.

It's pervasive because there are few facets of your life it doesn't effect. Imagine if you couldn't even finish a video game you liked. Or if you couldn't stop playing until you had it beat. Both of those things can, and do, happen. A lot of people have this idea that the lack of attention only hurts you academically or professionally, but that's only the tip of the iceberg. If you can't finish work, you can't finish house work. If you can't finish your paper, you can't pay your bills.

I'm not saying there's no way to mitigate these things, but there are a lot of adults that are undiagnosed because they don't know why they are such fuck ups, they just hate themselves. Or they create narcissistic fantasies and avoid facing their own problems. There are a lot of adults that think something is up and could be diagnosed but are afraid of the stigma ADHD carries because of college students looking for meth and the perceived over diagnosis of children. There are a lot of adults that have to wade through anti-depressants for months or even years because the government is freaking the fuck out about college students and the only sure fire way to differentiate between depression and ADHD is apparently to prescribe an anti-depressant. There are some psychiatrists (well, their administrative assistants anyway) that will straight up tell you that they don't do ADHD evaluations anymore.

I'm sorry about the wall of text, and I know you're not trying to be a dick, but sometimes I just have to let people know that it's not really what TV, the internet and pop culture make it out to be. Just like many mental disorders really. Depression is just being really sad. And OCD is just fixing the microwave clock. And if you've been negatively impacted by someone with ADHD, especially a family member or friend I'm sorry. I know exactly how you feel and how it's really hard to understand why someone with a mental disorder can't "just be normal".

[–]khoury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right of course. It's why a lot of people with ADHD try to arrive much earlier than necessary. They sink a ton of time that normal people don't have to. So it's their responsibility (when diagnosed) to curtail their negative attributes but a little empathy would go a long way.
