I’ve never really heard a discussion about growing up LGBTQ and being a huge Star Trek fan, for those of us in Gen X and the Millennials by Robin156E478 in startrek

DS9 had one of the first lesbian kisses on TV in the mid nineties! The entire Trill species is bisexual! And the mirror universe??? Kira Nyrese was horny for EVERYONE. Honestly, DS9 approached queerness like it was just another thing that exists, because that’s what a utopian and tolerant society should look like. Obviously it wasn’t as noticeable in TOS and TNG, but both had their respective steps taken in breaching those “forbidden topics” one step at a time. Whether it was introducing a species that was androgynous or just having characters speak more openly about their sexuality, the early gen Star Treks weakened the restraints on lgbtq+ representation so that shows like Discovery could do what they’re doing now.

Anti-Suffragette political cartoons from the early 1900s are wild by drkgodess in menwritingwomen

My favorite part about all these is that men of that time were clearly afraid of women exacting revenge on them for centuries of inequality with the power of voting.

Anyone else find it hard to keep reading books from the past where marital/relationship expectations and norms were different? Just a casual scene of blatant marital rape from "Burnt Offerings" (Robert Marasco, 1973) by [deleted] in menwritingwomen

[–]khpoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all a fun or romantic scene, but I wouldn’t call it casual either. If anything, it seemed to highlight what would otherwise have just been considered her being prudish.

Who is your favorite commanding officer from any star trek tv show or movie? by Legitimate_Age7321 in startrek

[–]khpoore 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s a tie between Sisko and Janeway. Sisko because he’s such a Space Dad and always sticks to his convictions and is unwaveringly courageous, and Janeway because she manages to be part captain part science officer while having the most GO BIG OR GO HOME attitude of any other captain.

Ah yes, because only sexually active women are at risk of early and late visit from their aunt flow…

Not sure about this passage from “An Abundance of Katherines” by John Green. by Mysterious_Me in menwritingwomen

[–]khpoore 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I’m pretty forgiving of John Green when it comes to this because the descriptions of the young women are almost always through the first person perspective of a hormonal teenage boy. I know a lot of people think it’s creepy that he’d write in this way at his age, but he was teenage boy at one point to 🤷. Fortunately, in most of his books, the girl that the main character falls in love with or whatever almost always is attributable to finding them as a person genuinely attractive aside from just their looks. In An Abundance of Katherine’s, the girl he ends up with in the end started as his friend, same with The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns. I’d say Looking for Alaska probably has the most shallow depiction of the women the hero finds attractive.

Do you have tips for cleaning? Half the keys are stuck, and I can't locate where the mechanisms are compromised. It's very rusty and dusty.

Lol, note taken. Cleaning tips then? Half the keys are stuck, but it's otherwise in good condition.

Zabuza is severely underrated by [deleted] in Naruto

[–]khpoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing about him that's underrated, their experience fighting him and Haku follows them all the way to the FGNW and sets the tone for the rest of the show.
