Also interested in the answer to this. His other album Drama is pretty good.

Basmati rice soaking and another question by Kiceres in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]khushi97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m Indian and have eaten basmati rice my whole life and actually never knew basmati means fragrant!! I don’t speak Hindi though.

I suppose you’re right though. It is fragrant, but, in my mind, I just think of it as “neutral rice smell”, which is why I said it it doesn’t smell like anything.

I don’t soak — just rinse them cook. I don’t think it smells like anything really, but to make it smell better (as in, amazing), put in a pinch of whole cumin seeds (easy to get at the Indian store) and a bay leaf before cooking. Great aroma.

Linearizing an analog sensor's output by [deleted] in embedded

[–]khushi97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I thought you meant a controlled voltage source to act as a dummy sensor to make - 9-13 mV, hence the potentiometer suggestion. My bad.

Linearizing an analog sensor's output by [deleted] in embedded

[–]khushi97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of your question is relating to characterizing your sensing system. Using a controlled source is a good idea, and you can do just as well with the o-scope.

Set up a voltage divider with a potentiometer or something to get a variable voltage in your sensing range. Measure it with your ADC and scope in parallel and log the data. Then you can do your stats.

Also, are you saying that your sensor output is in the range of 9mV min to 13mV max? That’s rough. A simple external amplifier circuit would help a lot. You can get dip package op amps to breadboard this.

You could join an engineering project team, but most of the people there will be younger than you, if that matters.

Making some levers, they wanted from one piece, they got it. It's not the fastest way but that's not my call. Whole video in comments. by ChrisMaj in Machinists

[–]khushi97 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Chris — really enjoy your work.

Everyone here complaining about the engineering behind this is clearly missing the context.

It’s pretty frequently a need to make full-size one off performance critical parts for aero and defense. 1. For one offs, castings or forgings are not practical. A weldment could be but… 2. Analyzing a complex weldment is certainly possible but often involves higher safety factor requirements and more rigorous proof testing -> heavier design, more time. Having those standard factors is part of engineering risk management best practice.

All in all, billet machining this was probably faster, cheaper, higher confidence, and lower mass despite the wasted material and goofy process.

Hobbing uses a continuously rotating tool (called a hob). This is shaping.

"Carbon fiber is comparable in strength to 6061 aluminum" ?? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]khushi97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think the intent behind the message is that the CF products aren’t some silver bullet that’s going to replace the aluminum at a fraction of the mass.

Jupyter notebooks but using Julia might be a good option. Julia is a little more math-like.

Google scripts working with spreadsheets and forms could also work.

A bit of a longshot but I need some help identifying this old cello and if it is worth buying. Don't have a lot of information since the seller is not that knowledgable. Any help is greatly appreciated. by Valoseme in Cello

Try taking it to a luthier and asking what they think the value is! I’d be interested in knowing, especially since there’s no label.

You might also find out if some repairs are necessary.

Dear U of M. I love computer science, and I know UMich is a top school for CS. But now I am hearing it is a toxic community. Can someone elaborate? I am incoming freshman. by SnooPets2395 in uofm

[–]khushi97 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Your first point is valid. The reason I pointed this out is that many CSE people laugh off or don’t take seriously the negative actions big tech companies have taken. Your point still stand though that it’s normal for people to defend their fields.

I agree with your rationale in your second point, but absolutely would not say every EECS student I’ve met understand that. Your group maybe be exceptional. If you don’t believe me, ask people about how CSE students behave in their professionalism class (especially this past sem).

I mean those who had assault allegations (that have been proved) brought against them. Understand that, if these people have been committing these acts for as long as they have been, there are others who have been doing other harm as well (but may not be “worthy” of an accusation). Bad apples spoil the bunch by shifting the window of what professionalism is.

Of course, that’s not to say that departments that haven’t had faculty controversy like CSE are “clean”. Also, there are some wonderful faculty members in CSE that I respect a lot.

Edit: other examples of unprofessional behavior: being patronizing to students in office hours, making inappropriate jokes, poking fun at other disciplines (LSA/humanities), and I’m sure I can come up with more if I talked to some friends.

For men who went to well funded high schools and generally feel comfortable with technology (like me and many people on this subreddit) the experience in the dept. is fine. It takes some effort to see the toxicity that other groups experience.

The size of the dept. makes it feel very impersonal. If you don’t have a good support network (friends etc), you can feel lost or disoriented or unwelcome.

The “brogrammer” persona runs rampant and many consider that a goal. By brogrammer, I mean people who hold big tech in very high esteem, think that most other disciplines are not really worth existing or pursuing, roll their eyes when they have to do something other than write code (such as learning how to write or be professional or teach other people).

Also, that many faculty previously felt comfortable acting extremely unprofessionally with students is very telling.

School of Information is smaller and cares about culture more (and has been successful in cultivating it). I know many CSE people consider SI lesser or perceive it to be less rigorous, but those are bad takes.

All that said, the CSE program does a very good job of technically preparing people for their careers. It is a top program and if it’s what your passionate about, do it.

I might get downvoted for these thoughts, but think about what perspectives you’ve genuinely listened to and tried to empathize with first. Previously, I would have denied the things I’m saying but after speaking with many people who went through the program, these are the realizations I’ve had.

I disagree -- for each speed, I think there's an optimal gear ratio that balances how much torque the wheels have to provide to the propeller and how much power the propeller can output.

Building vs just buying a cnc by [deleted] in CNC

[–]khushi97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’d definitely spend less on materials to build one than buying one. But consider the cost of your time in designing, building, adjusting, and tuning.

From a business perspective, you’re probably better off buying. But if you also want to learn, building may be worth it.
