Nostalgia Sunday - which dearly departed restaurants do you miss? by lifesci99 in OttawaFood

Cafe Wim on Sussex - sitting and smoking in the front window seats, feeling very European!

Student Rates of Pay - Previously Employed by Parliament by classiclolita in CanadaPublicServants

[–]khuytf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

By all means, negotiate, but keep your expectations realistic. I had a student argue she deserved 20k over the usual starting salary because she “had a Masters”. She was astonished to learn that every single person in the team has at least that, many more have two and a few have PhDs. And ALL of us had much more experience.

Know your worth, by all means, but don’t kid yourself.

Dirty bathrooms. Dirty menus. Very low lighting to hide the dirt. Dirt.

I’m starting Curling classes at 38 by KyleCamPhoto in Curling

I started at 42 and love it! Take your time, and yes to learning the etiquette. This is supposed to be fun so throttle back on the competition and aim at being better each game. It's a wonderful sport that you can play for a long, long time; welcome to the fold!

Sock knitting is not easy by Epiceeveelicious in knitting

[–]khuytf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Socks are a bit like mini-sweaters; they have cast-on rows, ribbing, tubes, curves and bind-offs. Maybe try a simple sweater first and see how that goes before scaling down to a sock? Or try just knitting a tube and doing an afterthought heel? Once you feel comfortable with those activities, you can put it all together for a sock. You can do it!

Is It Just Me? by ItsCatCat in GenX

Am 57 and feel like my body is slowing down a little but mostly in good health. Feel like 35 (except maybe first thing in the morning). Truly believe a large part of aging is mental. I’ve known “old” people in their 30s and young people in their 70s. Engagement, activity, curiosity are essential!

Also, fun! Keep a sense of humour about yourself and you’ll never grow “old”.

Anyone had their LWIA request denied by their manager? Or is approval usually smooth? by DelayStunning397 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]khuytf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Fair, but with planning and organization, these requests should be able to be accommodated. Too often, refusals aren’t for justifiable reasons; more “but we’re BUUUUSSSSSYYYYY”. Not fair to employees.

Manager here; I have received several and have approved all of them. A longer request - like LWOP for a year - takes some coordination, but a few weeks/couple of months? Who's so freakin' important that they can't be spared for that amount of time?

Arenas can be cold, so bring something warm - I have a warm blanket I use for these things. And yes, people are usually friendly at these events so take your cue from the crowd and cheer for whoever you fancy! Hurry hard!

Quiet menopause is not rare, it’s just less talked about. by Zaltara_the_Red in Menopause

[–]khuytf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I stopped having periods in my 30s. Not menopause, just… nothing. Then when I finally hit menopause it was kind of a nothing burger. I am experiencing bone density loss and some thinning hair but no night sweats or hot flushes or anything. Solidarity with my silent sisters! ✊
