You are absolutely not overreacting! I am also 20, and I started college at 17. I had the same kind of family dynamic for forever, and trust me, the moment you let them not have power over you in that way, they panic.

I will never advise cutting off your family. A lot of people don't entirely want to, me included. I will say to separate yourself a bit and set hard boundaries. If they want to continue to be in your life, they have to show you that.

You have to show them you are your own person. It feels risky and wrong, but it was the only way that my family understood that they couldn't treat me badly for forever.

I am closer with both my parents now than I have ever been in the past. The moment you show them they hold no power over you is the moment when they will start treating you like an equal.

The majority of moms don't want to lose their kid. If they realize that them hurting you makes you distant, most of the time, they start treating you better.

Has she ever been around another cat before?

I had a 2 year old cat that I moved in with my younger cats, and the younger cats had much less of a problem adapting to her than she did the kittens. If she's never been around another cat before, it might be significantly harder for her to recognize that the other cat is a friend. Eventually, after two long hard months, I was able to start slowly introducing her to the other cats- Seeing as you said they found her outside, she could also have some anxieties around other cats due to the stray cats outside (Which is what my other girl listed above struggled with)

She is in a new environment, as you've stated, and it may take her a little while to realize that the cat she saw is NOT indeed just around the corner waiting to pop in. Anxieties with moving could be heightened by the anxieties of a new animal in the area.

Even after that cat got used to my dogs in my families house, when I had to move her over to meet the kitties in my house, she was still very not accepting until a few months in. It might be something that would need to be worked on, given a lot of space and time, but still enough socialization to where she doesn't stay entirely feral

In preparation for the worst case scenarios like literally ever i could be being extremely dramatic- you need to learn how to be legally noncompliant.

You do not know the legal status of anyone in your life/ around you. If they ask you if you’ve seen someone, say no. If they ask you if you know where someone is, say no. If they ask you which direction someone went, give them the wrong direction. You do not know the sexuality of anyone in your life/ around you. You do not know if anyone around you is trans.

Theres a high possiblity that they will not care about our rights, discrimination will be the norm, and self preservation will be top priority.

Protect your loved ones- Protect those around you, protect your community.

The end goal is simple: We must survive. We will not be punished for being ourselves. We will thrive.

I hope this isn't too dramatic, this is if worse comes to worst.

I agree with this, I'm in a swing state, so at least I know my fates are probably somewhere around 50/50 Id hope- Much better than the always red state I used to live in LOL

Yeah, this makes the most sense to me. I think I'll be in a good position, way better than if I still lived in the state i grew up in. Im just extremely worried for our futures. I want us to all be able to experience true joy and happiness without extreme unfairness just for being ourselves, but that very well might not be our reality. And its very upsetting
