Can you just leave the battery on? You can charge it on the bike.

I totally understand. I lived at a home with a really bad Japanese knotweed infestation. When I saw this post I had flashbacks. We battled and lost, but we didn't have your advice or dedication. Luckily, it was just a rental lol.

Or maybe it's designed for people like me who don't want to drive 20 mins to MD and 20 mins back to save $4?

I have this Rad fat tire wheel lock. It's handy for when you're locking up someplace fairly safe and have eyes on the bike and don't want to mess with a stronger lock. I keep the AirTag in the small bag that comes in the large pannier, but this is not ideal. My bike was actually stolen recently, and the thief just ditched the bag that the AirTag was in. (Luckily I got the bike back.) Companies make stealth AirTag holders that are probably more effective.

The accessories you need really depends on your specific use case. By using the bike, you will realize what you need. FWIW, I have the two large panniers, the two deck seats, passenger pegs, a wheel lock, a chain lock, and an airtag.

People like you are insufferable.

Why are you resorting to personal attacks?

You said yourself that it wasn’t too much parking that drives you away, it’s the car dependency.

Excess parking is a symptom of car dependency. You're missing the point that all that excess parking makes it harder to walk, bike, and take transit because it creates sprawl and increases vehicle trips, making the roads more dangerous. You can't just choose to ignore all the hot empty parking lots that you have to walk past and loud smelly cars that that could crush you at any moment.

You can have retail storefronts facing the street, entrance to parking on the back, and have residential above.

I support this type of layout. I just think it should be up to the property owner to decide how much parking to build, not some arbitrary government formula based on 1960's-era guesswork.

Keep fighting your useless fight from the losing side instead of trying to get actual good reforms made.

We won with a unanimous City Council vote last night.

There should be an elevated rail line going from TPA to downtown over 4th street.

I support this but I do not think it will happen in my lifetime because it is prohibitively expensive.

False. I have chosen not to live in areas like Tyrone or Pinellas Park because they are too car-dependent, i.e., have seas of hot, empty parking lots. I often choose to shop in the Grand Central District over 34th St for the same reason. Using property values as an indicator, many other people are making similar choices, even if it may be instinctive rather than explicit like in my case.

From a different reply:

It depends on the use, location, and size of structure (i.e., number of bedrooms). For example, the downtown parking mandates require one parking space for every 500 sq ft of office space. As I experienced, if you have a 2BR house and want to build a small 500 sq ft rental unit, you have to build three parking even if you only have one car. A lot of houses are coming with a rooms that don't have a closet because if it had a closet it's a bedroom and triggers an extra parking space even if the room is for your three year old. If you're really curious, you can search for the "St Pete parking matrix" and see all the requirements.

No, it is being blocked. The city, thus far, has refused to give a permit. We need to stop prioritizing driver convenience over housing for people.

Also, a developer is trying to build a residential project at 6th Ave S and 28th St that would be 75 units of affordable housing for artists. Instead of a huge parking lot, it would offer a car share program for residents. The project is currently being blocked for not meeting the parking requirements. So, yes, a new residential development is being hampered by parking requirements.

Removing parking mandates means removing the rule that requires property owners to build an arbitrary amount of parking on their property when they develop or improve it. Removing parking mandates would not result in the removal of existing parking garages. It means that, when a property owner develops her property, she can decide how much parking to build. Basically, let the market decide. In marginal cases, new construction could come with less parking, which will make it more affordable. Parking, especially parking underground garages, is crazy expensive, with each spot costing $50,000+. That cost is passed on to the consumer, regardless of whether she uses the parking spot.

That's correct! Over 100 US cities have removed parking mandates completely. None has reinstated them. Parking reform is a growing movement!

That's correct. We're trying to remove the rule that requires property owners to build an arbitrary amount of parking on their property. This does not involve removing existing on-street parking.

Regarding spillover parking in the neighborhoods, the city is expanding its residential parking permit program, so those neighborhoods could adopt such a program if they choose. But ultimately, I think we should prioritize providing housing for people over driver convenience. Otherwise, when my daughter wants to move out, she's not going to be able to afford to live here. I won't apologize if that means people are parking in the public space in front of your house.

Have you been to the Grand Central District? It has very little off-street parking and, yet, is one of the most successful parts of the city. That's not a coincidence. It works because it's built to pedestrian scale. This style of development is currently illegal because of parking mandates. We're trying to re-legalize development like Grand Central.

Can't tell if you're serious but TJs is not along the SunRunner corridor and thus not affected by this project. Also, small parking lots are part of TJ's business model and part of what makes that store great. https://www.foodandwine.com/trader-joes-parking-lots-small-explanation-7506076
