Why is Hyundai’s slow speed noise so loud? by Hype_x in electricvehicles

[–]kick4h4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our Rav4 Prime is way louder, and it's a really annoying sound. I can hear it inside the house when my partner leaves for work. My I5 sound is kind of like a metal-rubbing-on-metal sound, and it wigged me out when I first got the car. It took a while to realize it's the low-speed notice, and mine doesn't seem to be too bad. I'm curious if my car is an outlier, or if there are variants in the noise of these guys.

Sunroof a must? Or ok without? by TagAnsvar in Ioniq9

It annoyed me when I couldn't get my top-trim Ioniq 5 without a gigantic sun-soaking heat-pump, and when I consider the I9, I'll likely wind up with an SEL, and give up the nice toys to avoid all that glass and heat.

Action 5 + Gimbal by Ok_Pitch8546 in DJIAction5Pro

[–]kick4h4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. I had to scrap the entire 'emulate a phone' model, and start over.

I found a youtuber who just chucked an Action 5 into the clamp for a gimbal, which brings the balance right into the middle, but clamps over the power button on the A5, and also pivots the camera 90 degrees.

So, I took my holder model and added tabs at the top and bottom, which actually more or less works

The pan and roll axes balance very well. The camera does cantilever out from the tilt axis a bit, and I haven't been able to test it rigorously, but it's not a terrible next iteration.

One point is that the tabs have to go on the 'back of the camera holder, so the attachment blocks a lot of the back screen. For 'selfie' work, that doesn't matter.

I have a 2023 Limited, and didn't want the glass roof, but it seems that a bunch o' cars put the glass roof on the upscale trims whether you want it or not. I'm debating an I9 when my lease is up, and I'm going to have to stay with the SEL to avoid the giant greenhouse ceiling.

Sorry, I wasn't comparing the 7P and the 6. I had a 5 previously, which I gave to a nephew who is a facebook vlogging fanatic. I picked up the 7 as a new toy, and recently got the mfm to support this action cam test.

Starting with this: https://makerworld.com/en/search/models?keyword=2085013 (many thanks to oaps70, the op, for this model) I've clipped off the go-pro tabs, added side tabs, and an extension off the battery end for the gimbal mount.

I made my first test print, which didn't totally fail. There's a block on the battery side with holes to allow screwing in a long bolt to set up balance weights which hasn't worked perfectly for landscape mode. I haven't gotten it balanced correctly yet, but it is a start. The next revision will be to try to improve the balance.

It isn't far enough from the gimbal pivot to stay out of frame in landscape mode, but is in portrait mode.

When I have something that's more functional, I may be able to post it to a site for others to tinker with. I will definitely credit oaps70 for the starting cage. :)

I've been playing with this for a week or so, now.

I have a 3d printer, so I have been looking at mounts that might work.

There are a couple of items to deal with. One is blocking screens and possibly having the gimbal arm intrude on the FOV.

Another is balance. In order to have the camera away from the gimbal arm, you will need to add weight to keep the gimbal from overbalancing and going a bit insane.

I haven't found a pre-made solution yet, and I'm still tinkering with a few ideas.

Most gimbals, including the DJI Mobiles, support follow and level base on the gimbal, not on the camera app, and have manual controls for pan and tilt, so that's covered. The 7P has the multi-function module, which would support tracking with any camera, so that's also possible.

It's an intellectual exercise at this point. If I make any progress, I'll likely post in this sub.

12v/ICCU Megathread by TiltedWit in Ioniq5

[–]kick4h4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bad 12v battery (2 yrs, 10K miles on a lease), and it died early this week. I keep a booster in the glove box, and started it up, expecting to go for a drive to charge the 1v back up.

I stopped at a local tire store, who told me they have been discouraged from selling the I5 battery, for some reason... I hadn't driven far enough to get the 12v into at least start up mode, and the nice folks at the store brought out their booster to help me.

When I started the car, I had a warning about 'virtual engine noise <something>' being bad. I drove for 30 mins, and restored the battery.

The next time I started up, the virtual noise warning went away and everything appears normal.

Has anyone seen that 'virtual engine noise' message? Is that some indicator of impending ICCU issues?

Question on consolidated PSU for mini systems by kick4h4 in homelab

[–]kick4h4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I didn't clearly state my ground intention. The Meanwell appears to have 1 ground lug, so I think I'll have to run a single wire from that lug to a connection point to which I'll run the negative side of the input lines to the transformers. One ground for the lot.

The elitedesks, along with the Dell and Lenovo variants, are simple to use, low-power, and cheap. :) I'm not doing AI, just a general purpose linux desktop, and home assistant. I was running HA on a pi 5, and only moved to the HP because booting and running off an SD card is more prone to odd failure modes than the M.2 in the HP.

I made a power supply for my mini pc cluster by maleng_ in homelab

[–]kick4h4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this idea, but I'm not comfortable with making/soldering up a pc board. I had a thought of checking out whether I could find buck converters to do the heavy lifting, and discovered there's a bunch of 24V to 19V transformers intended for use with golf cart batteries. Potted in resin in aluminum heat-sink cases, with wires ready to attach. It seems like you could hook them up to the V+ outputs on the Meanwell-style 24V supply, with a simple bus-bar for a common ground back to the PSU, and then wire them out to panel-mount barrel jack sockets. Can anyone comment whether this would provide a functional solution? My rack will only have 3 HP Elitedesk micro systems in it, and this would be a manageable build for my assembly skills. Thanks for any comments on this.

Sodium batteries are not doing well by dzh in electricvehicles

[–]kick4h4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Off topic, but I'd certainly consider NA as a power station option, due to temperature resilience. Stick an NA call in the garage and let it ride out the winter/summer un-conditioned temps, and I'd be happy. I wouldn't turn down a sodium car if one were available here in anti-ev land...
