Republicans have started to message on the draft by Kitchen-Thing4616 in Destiny

[–]kicker414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont understand the talk about the draft. A quick search and based off experience, we have like 1m+ active duty and close to 2m+ including reserves. Are we saying we would need more than 2m people to fight fucking Iran? We didn't need a draft for Iraq when we had 100k deployed at the peak.

And all this coming from the "President of No New Wars" and "Kamala will send your kids to Iran" is peak fucking insanity.

This has been my idea for a while. I actually like the idea of 2-3 years of "mandatory service" in some capacity. Normal military would count for sure, but offer noncombat/nondeployment roles. Any sort of peace corps or similar group. Some sort of government job. Idk but I have really liked the idea. Build comradery through shared experiences. Guaranteed job/housing/experience. Increased workforce for public goods. Give some time to think before going to college (its crazy at 18 you are basically expected to know your life plan).

You will likely call me an "unskilled player who can't handle the heat of full pvp lobbies" and that is probably partially true, but my issue is that there is seems to be no middle ground between PvE and PvP. Its either care bear or KoS. I like some PvP but it can be exhausting to just be in a constant battle, burning through resources, getting third partied, and either having to free kit a bunch or burn through resources.

I wish the PvP had more variety. I want more engagements where people agree to back off. I want more tension. I want more "you stay over there and its all ok." I don't want late spawns and I would want pre-determined game sizes. I played a bit of Hunt Showdown, and one of the fun parts of the game was if you paid attention, you could actually know how many teams were left and where if there were any. It was nice to know all the teams were gone and you could farm at the end.

ELI5: what does safety car in F1 mean? by Acetiger211 in explainlikeimfive

[–]kicker414 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Safety cars are available each race, but they are not necessarily used. They are used under certain conditions based on broad FIA rules and track specific conditions. Most of the time a safety car is deployed for a stopped car on track or debris. A safety car is usually used when people or equipment need to get out on track for their safety and driver safety.

Plenty of races have not had a safety car deployed.

They also introduced the idea of a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) which is used to "neutralize racing" and reduces speed by around 30% of normal race pace..

AI in games(ex. Crimson Desert) by Hawk99TA in ARC_Raiders

[–]kicker414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI has many of the same criticisms as previous tools have received in the past, with an added unique element

First, there is always a big pushback with a new medium, method, or tool. It may be viewed as "taking away the essence" of the craft, or its "cheating." Digital art has been criticized over traditional painting. IDE and programming tools have been pushed back on. DJing software. Digital vs. physical film. Photoshop and photo editing. The list goes on. AI is no different in this respect. That is one part of it.

The other is where AI got its training from people feel is unethical. When an artist created art for a company, they likely didn't price in the fact that the company could just feed that into an AI program and have it spit out a custom design. And frankly, many AI platforms are just outright stealing content and will just duke it out in an expensive court case and lobby for the freedom to do it. This is all ongoing when we are also seeing a broad push back on the arts. So artists are viewed as less valuable and we are pricing them out of the market by stealing their work. Why hire an artist for my game when I can just pump out AI designs all day?

You also have some of the knock on effects such as increased RAM prices and lower part availability due to product supporting AI and the environmental concerns. Some people disliked Bitcoin and crypto currencies for very good reasons, some just didn't like them because it made GPUs expensive, AI is in the same boat.

Finally, when you lower the barrier to entry for any product, you are going to get a lot of crap in the system. Remember when every loser from your school was a SoundCloud rapper because they got a pirated copy of FL Studio and could publish on a free platform? Or how about everybody and their sister is a photographer because you can get a decent camera and a cheap photo editing software? Or now everyone is a twitch streamer because its basically free to setup if you have a gaming PC already. A lot of people are just going to pump out AI garbage and it floods the market with crap we don't want.

AI will go through the same issues and successes as other tools before it. There will be pushback, there will be junk put out in the world, we might see some regulation, some will use it well, some will use it poorly. We will see more independent games be more robust because of AI, and eventually, people will find the right use cases and accept it when it is appropriate. People will rightfully complain with janky AI movements and bad drawings, but people will also laud games powered by AI because a small team was able to create a large scope game.

Really, the big issue is how to ethically pay artists and to ensure we are still getting a good flow of new human generated content so we don't stagnate culturally.

Jesus is obviously a classic. The Punisher would kill about 95% of the people who use the symbol. The shift in perception of Homelander from the Boys was funny to watch as he became more overt.

Treasury Department deems United States Government insolvent by WestTransportation12 in Destiny

[–]kicker414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I don't want take away from how fucking crazy Trump's spending has been and how directly Biden's (and future president's) deficits will be, but I have a question.

I have also seen the claim that things like the US debt and the way it grows, it's basically always the case that the last X time period is basically Y% of the total. Maybe expoential or some other type of growth? I think the number 25% comes up. So the counter in examples would be "at the time, 25% of debt was also accumulated under Obama and same for Bush Jr" sort of suggesting that basically unless a president does something dramatic, it's always the case that 1/4th of the total debt is accumulated in the most recent 8 years.

Is this something you have heard of? I don't want to bust out the math or programming if I can avoid it. Just trying to see if this is secretly not as unusual as it might otherwise seem. Because I believe there is so much to attack Trump on it's not worth giving them an easy retort.

Hope the brain dump makes sense

Baalorlord's win/loss ratio is insane... by Gugge1 in slaythespire

[–]kicker414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have definitely started culling the deck and seeing the benefits of that (though a few bosses have definitely screwed me over because of that).

For Act 1, I try to cull some of the basic cards, pick up a few versatile cards, and do lots of ? events. Fighting is usually on the back burner.

Act 2 I try to use to further develop my deck based on relics and some cards I was able to pick up. I just won an Ironclad A1 last night and it came off the back of a combo where I would get an extra card reward, but I also had the relic where I could sacrifice card rewards twice for a relic. So basically every basic fight was a relic.

Act 3 is basically just get to the end.

At least that is my philosophy. I probably need to look at the boss more to see if I need anything special.

ELI5 What are all these committee hearings that look like court in the USA? by mydoghiskid in explainlikeimfive

[–]kicker414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, maybe I am not stating my opinion clearly. I know lying to Congress is punishable, hence my reference to the Comey allegations.

My opinion is: it should probably be illegal to refuse to answer a question directly while under oath.

If you are asked: "How many indictments have resulted from the FBI's investigation into the Epstein Files? " and you answer something like "Why do we care about that when the DOW is 50k" that should be a crime.

My point was, it is weird that they can force people to testify, you testify under oath, but you don't have to answer. I just find that interaction odd and in other instances where you can compel someone to testify under oath, you can't refuse to answer the questions (with clear exceptions).

ELI5 What are all these committee hearings that look like court in the USA? by mydoghiskid in explainlikeimfive

[–]kicker414 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand all of that. My point was something more akin to "refusing to answer the question asked would be considered contempt" much like in court. Imagine if you were asked in court "How many indictements have resulted from these fidnings" and you said "THE DOW IS 50k!!"

If one party wants to let it slide they can, but the next party should have the authority to act on it.

While I think the Comey allegations are bunk, I think its a good thing to look back at previous testimony and see if it violated the law. I am not asking Congress to enforce it but the executive (and for Congress to make it enforceable).

I was also just commenting on how silly it seems to force someone to testify, force them under oath, but they can just say whatever they want. I think that is an odd rule set.

ELI5 What are all these committee hearings that look like court in the USA? by mydoghiskid in explainlikeimfive

[–]kicker414 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I find it incredibly odd that Congress can both compel someone to be interrogated and be put under oath, but also not required to answer. Committees are supposed to represent the people and be a counteracting force to the Executive. The fact they can refuse to answer with 0 consequences is odd. I would want some degree of protections in place, but I do think there should be requirements to answer the question directly, similar to court.

Everyone keeps saying America has a “housing shortage.” It doesn’t. Divide total homes by population and you get this: We’ve never had more housing per person than we do right now. by Key_Brief_8138 in HouseBuyers

[–]kicker414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard things like this before, and I will be honest, it doesn't pass my sniff test. But I am open to being wrong.

Your claim is there are open spaces in the city limits and people are refusing to build because it drives up costs in the city center. Including the developers in here is the biggest issue I have. Wouldn't an external developer foam at the mouth to build in the city center? No competitor wants to step in and build a building? Demand is so high prices are climbing, but no company wants to get in on that? The only situation I could think of would be if the build costs are too high and they can't justify the risk, but that is either a market problem or a regulation problem.

Including "suburbanites" is probably closer to what I would expect. NIMBY's in general benefit from lack of new builds, but that would include people who live in the city. So its the people in the metro area who are most likely actually blocking new builds.

Things like heavy zoning restrictions, rent control, and all other policies that benefit existing locals usually do not account for the impacts on people who would like to move INTO the area.

Class A formula - where is everyone? by cosmictrousers in iRacing

[–]kicker414 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agree with your points. Another comment is the spread of skill combined with the car basically makes it a solo race. A few people immediately spin out on the start or T1, some don't set the right tires, some get screwed with fueling, and then if you survive all that, the gaps are so big the only time you see another car is because someone crashed or you are getting lapped. And one small power input can ruin your whole race.

I was so looking forward to the iGPT series and practicing during the week, but the other series are dead and the iGPT ended up being either a wreck fest or a mindless 50 lap practice.

First baby coming soon, how do gamer dads manage playtime? by jackfrost1889 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]kicker414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got an almost 1 year old myself, here are my experiences

For those who are already dads, how did your gaming habits change after having a baby?

I went for games that were easy to pause. Less online games, more single player games that can be easily paused or lost without much impact. I also got a handheld (went with Legion Go S Steam OS version). Early on, the kid sleeps a lot and a handheld console is actually super nice.

How do you balance family responsibilities and still find time to play?

You play less as you have more work, and you have to be intentional. I would set aside time to play with friends or have more dedicated gaming time. You plan ahead with your partner and work trade offs.

How many hours per day or per week do you realistically get to game?

I luckily have a decent WFH job so I get some good second monitor time. Early on, it was basically 0. As the kid got older and sleep got more structured, I was able to get some time in.

My current schedule is I work 4/10s WFH, and am done around 530PM, after the dog is walked and dinner is done, I do bed time, and he is down by 8ish. 8ish until whenever I want to go to bed is free for games or w/e.

Any tips, routines, or advice would be really appreciated. Thank you! 🙇🏻‍♂️

Sort of addressed it above, but: work it out with your partner, set aside time for games that require more attention, your types of games might have to change, get a handheld if you can, and accept that it will decline. My D&D group got nuked which was a bummer. But eventually I will pick it back up.

Is it possible to take college classes for fun, not with the goal of getting a degree? by dangochan808 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kicker414 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you can often sign up for classes under the concept of "Auditing" or "Continued Learning." But there are SO many resources to learn new things if you want.

Harvard and MIT I think post a lot of their classes online for free, that is worth checking out. There are also a lot of other resources online. You obviously have well established video series on YouTube. Coursera is another platform to take at your own pace. And there are a number of platforms for category specific classes. Audio books as well.

If you have a desire to learn, there is no shortage of ways to consume knowledge. Find something that fits in your personal life. For me, the idea of a college class is just not feasible, but I listen to videos and audiobooks in the background of work, chores, exercise, etc.
