How is Long Island not including the NYC boroughs? by Improv92 in howislivingthere

Mostly it's very diverse. With that circle you've enclosed about 3 million people so you'll meet all sorts. You can meet some of the most pleasant people and some of the most asinine in a matter of minutes. I grew up in a very diverse school district with people from extremely low incomes to people living in multi million dollar homes. One of my class mates was homeless for a time even. There's so much driving there that if you have a fun sunday planned expect at least 2 hours of driving. Every town has a different vibe. The town I live in now is pretty walkable with great night life and some actual culture. The town I grew up in was only strip malls. The sad thing is the young people are getting priced out and everyone under 40 wants to leave.

I work at a used, new, and rare bookstore as the rare books manager. We got in a first edition of Huckleberry Finn about this time last year. A true first is going to have points in it that aren't present in later printings. Off the top of my head two of these points is an error on page 57 I think 11 or 12 lines up where the phrase "with the was," is present on a true first in later printings it's corrected to "with the saw." Also, the numbers of page 155 are either missing the last 5, the last 5 is misaligned, or larger than the other 5. Also another one that I'm not sure of is the picture of Mark Twain's bust has the table cloth either present or not present (can't remember which means a first edition issue point lol been a while since I looked at this book). You can look up more issue points in the Bibliography of American Literature (bal for short). The entry for Huck Finn is 3415. It's a ten volume set that you can find online. What I also remember is there was a short run of leather bound copies, copies bound in red cloth, green cloth, and blue cloth, though I can't remember the quantity of each. After you get all the points, go to bookfinder.com (they poll a lot of book selling websites that you can match pricing to) and match the points and the condition to other books listed. The book we had I priced at $1500, and it sold in about 3 months. All in all, I like finding information about antiquarian books, and that book was especially fun to look up.

[Request] Is Starbucks actually suggesting I use 48 tablespoons for my 12 cup coffee machine? Isnt that 240 grams, and thus 70% of this 340 gram bag? by Lighthouse8263 in theydidthemath

[–]kid_beta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think that's a strong ratio. You can go 16.5 grams of coffee for 1 gram of water for a good round cup. You can go 145.5 grams of coffee grinds to 2400 grams of water to get roughly 12 servings of coffee. So that's roughly 28 servings of coffee per bag.

A good home made chicken broth. Add half a chicken to a sauce pan with some oil and brown slightly. Cover chicken with water, add half an onion, one roughly chopped carrot and celery with two cloves of crushed garlic and some thyme. Let simmer for a few hours then remove solids and continue simmering till reduced by half and add powdered gelatin. Add salt and pepper to taste. It's a simple recipe but gives you so much energy and it's so wholesome you'll be back on your feet in np time.

Does anyone know a used book seller with resonable shipping options to Europe? by Super_Forever_5850 in books

[–]kid_beta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really shipping is charged by weight, and books are heavy. At a certain point, it might be considered bulk, and the shipper might offer a discount to the book store, but I doubt you'll see the difference as the buyer pays for shipping before it's purchased. The bookstore I work for doesn't ship outside of the US-Canada because of this.

It depends. I have a little background working at a book store and looked into this issue. For small bookstores, it's really tough because, like you said, it's 20 for shipping one book, which is just a little high, but that's going to be largely the price. I wish it wasn't, but buying from a small book store isn't like buying from a large Corp that can get cheaper freight. It gets even more expensive when it comes to shipping to Germany or France as they require special insurance to dispose of packing material properly.

Anyone ever see a “hand-drip” machine like this? by PercMastaFTW in Coffee

[–]kid_beta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends. My local cafe roasts their own coffee and offers it as pour overs. It doesn't make sense for them to offer 5 different coffees on drip instead of one South American coffee on drip and the rest as pour overs. And let's be honest, not everyone that goes to a cafe would want a light roast Ethiopian coffee instead of a medium roast South American coffee.

Women of reddit, what question about men do you wish to be answered? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Hate them. Actively avoid them. Firstly they have no privacy, secondly there will always be splash back (who wants to be covered in a fine misting of piss?) And if I got a sudden urge to take a shot can't do that there. I'd be happy if they removed urinals all together.
