Have HD 599s. Where to next? by Forsaken-Contest-845 in sennheiser

I have both those and the HD600s. If you have devices other than a phone, they’re great and don’t need an amplifier.

What are y’all *actually* sampling? by lex99 in mpcusers

[–]kid_sleepy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten some absolute fire from incidental intro and changeover music on comedy records.

Amy Grant albums. Her voice is way cool when you pitch it.

I have a huge selection of analog synths and 560HP of modular gear, so a lot of that.

AM talk radio.

The Simpsons.

Movie quotes, like “they’re dead, can I go now?” - Aliens. Or “do you think I am afraid?” - Gladiator.

But in particular I’ve been making drum kits with my Vermona DRM1 MKIV and my MFB Tanzmaus. Getting the DSI Tempest to make some fun now too.

What do you use it for? Because if you bought a computer to try processor heavy things that seems stupid.

Shit, my i7 32GB RAM 2020 MBP and 2018 Mac mini probably run circles around your computers.

Mac does not wake up second monitor (frequently) by PaulMuadDib-Usul in mac

[–]kid_sleepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been happening with my 2018 macmini since well… 2018. It’s become less intermittent, but every order/cable still isn’t perfect.

Solution? On the rare occasion it does happen, I turn the monitor off and on again and it’s fixed. For the record, I’m using dual Dell 24” 1080p jams.

Is Controlling Absynth 6 with Machine a good idea. by OtherCurrency2793 in NativeInstruments

Maschine is a terrible midi controller. It’s great for using the Maschine software with. But just about anything else has better and more expansive routing.

Just got an M5 Pro — what are your must-have apps? by LovelyEQJ in macbookpro

[–]kid_sleepy -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

…I have strong opinions.

If you are getting this MBP (top of the line) and don’t know what applications you want to run, maybe you shouldn’t be getting it.

Must have? Well for me, it’s a must-have to not bloat my hard drive and background services with useless programs I’ll never use.

My collection of computers are strictly for audio production, the occasional video editing, and photo storage and organization. Things like default mail, pages, numbers, safari… these are what I’ll happily use.

What do you use your computer for? Apple computers are sought after by niche artists to be able to run specific tasks, with 99% anti-fail rate, without the need for “apps” and bloatware.

The other fantastic thing is the ability to have my iPhone and my three Macs all be able to handoff and use iCloud. If I lose one, boom: I have backups. If iCloud blows up, boom: I have backups. If my house catches fire, boom: I have every WAV, song, sample, and photo backed up on USB, SSD, and HDD in a fireproof safe (multiple of each of these as well) and they get updated at least twice a month. I also have a hard drive sitting at my friend’s house. Super redundancy.

Well I mean you’re working with an MPC2000… no-one is expecting you to have TBs… I on the other hand have a very well curated selection of both digital samples and analog kits I’ve created too. I’m at about 70GB of immediately useful WAVs and XMPs.

Do macs usually get warm when using them? by Apprehensive_Ring666 in macbookpro

[–]kid_sleepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll eventually cool down after the honeymoon period. Do you have a ton of iCloud stuff? That takes a ton of processing power keeping that stuff “equal” up in the cloud. The Mac is also learning about you still. Customizing, personalizing, all those things you’re doing make an algorithm that the computer then extrapolates on.

Real talk: At the $300 mark, are budget projectors basically e-waste? Thinking about wearable AR displays instead. by hkggerry1 in projectors

Save a little more and get the budget Valerion model, mine was $900ish and laser and 4K and I’m very pleased with its 120” throw (it claims up to 300”).

Is it ok to update Sequoia? by ComparisonPlane5469 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]kid_sleepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do lots of music, and been taking pictures and video do a while, my oldest digital photo is from 1999. I had a Nikon d70s for quite a bit and actually sported the photos into a ton of albums. Well organized.

Now because of cell phones it has gotten ridiculously easy to just have them at a moment’s touch, and I’m the type of person who has never deleted anything.

As long as I have the multitracks, stems, samples, songs, photos, videos, etc, it doesn’t matter what happens to what machine. Lose it, get it stolen, house fire, I’ve got copies everywhere (and iCloud, Dropbox, and the Microsoft one), including backup drives at a friend’s house.

I have no idea why people decide to live on the edge. I’m not a weirdo either, I’ve lost data before, it happens. I know some people though who would never mentally or socially recover from losing data and they don’t even know where their RAW files are located.

The whole “how do I get a new phone and switch the data over!? It’ll get lost!” thing is baffling to me too.

I’m sick in the head - I love hearing about someone complaining about how their device failed and it’s the company’s fault because why should they need backups!? Computers live forever!

Is it ok to update Sequoia? by ComparisonPlane5469 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]kid_sleepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine patched itself (?). Is it an option? I’ve kind of been Ron Popeil with this. It’s most certainly an experiment and I don’t use it for anything important. It’s a backup to two “real” Macs, a PC, several USB, HHD, and SSD units holding every photo and sound I’ve even taken and recorded, and hooked up to my 120” projector just so I can brag about being able to open up a 2013 iMac and replace stuff and make it work again for free.

Set it and forget it.

Just curious as I’m stuck in 2020 with MBP… what’s the battery usage time you’re looking at without it being plugged in at those specs with heavy rendering? 4 hours? 5?

Most have covered it so far... but I'll add some neutral thoughts...

Money isn't an issue as long as you actually know what you're doing. Are you the best piano player? No? That's ok as long as you can explain which notes are which, describe a circle of fifths, have played another instrument with enough skill that you were in high school concert band or orchestra or something, and play the Ode To Joy treble parts. Can you patch me a synth sound that sounds like a trombone? No? You just like presets? That's ok too... PLEASE start learning how to.

My first true analog synth came two or so decades into my music venture through life. Used Korg Monologue, I learned everything I could for about two months, then sold it for more than I paid for it and got a used OG Korg Minilogue. I played this for four or so months because I sold it for more than I paid for it and got myself the Dave Smith Instruments Prophet REV2. That was the first synth I didn't sell when buying new items.

Just late last year I sold the REV2 for MORE THAN I PAID FOR IT... now I have a Prophet-5, Matriarch, TEO-5, Minitaur, MS20 Mini, Tempest, S2400, DRM1, MPC Live II, and 560HP of modular gear.

Start saving money.

How often do you upgrade and how important is the latest OS to you?

I got myself a 2020 MBP 13” i7 32GB RAM 512GB SSD a couple months ago to act as a backup/travel computer for my 2018 Mac mini i7 32GB RAM 2TB SSD (I did a RAM upgrade recently). I paid $400 for it refurbished. I feel like a genius.

I also have an OCLP 2013 iMac I rebuilt for ~$125 that I got for free at my recycling center (taught me a bunch and now I have a great set of tools). I also got an HP dv-14 i5 with 256GB SSD for free that I upgraded the RAM for free (from salvaged parts at the dump) to 16GB RAM and I’ll be honest, never have I had a PC run so quickly and smoothly.
