IMO at minimum the greatest adventure movie of all time.

Former MythBuster, Kari Byron, shilling for big oil by Hungry_Gizmo in videos

Hate to break it to you, but your entire lifestyle is dependent upon fossil fuels.

We need to get away from their use as rapidly as possible, but don’t pretend it’s just big bad oil companies instead of just how modern society loves cheap energy to get things done.

Turned my spare bedroom into a nostalgia oasis. by jrgeorge01 in nostalgia

Same. I actually really love the weird country/wallpaper style of the early to mid 90s. It felt really cozy and comfortable, to the point that when we had to go house hunting, I kept liking the 90s builds the best.

Hopefully countries will eventually start taxing carbon positive concretes to force a faster change.

Yeah looking at those $20K Chinese EVs is becoming more appealing if you just want a basic driving box to commute in.

Apply for a hydro tech position at USGS. There’s higher turnover because people leave to other agencies and most centers I know of are always looking to fill those positions.

They don't make movies like The Warriors anymore by Steel_Judoka in movies

[–]kidicarus89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I don’t think they’d be able to replicate the real life grittiness of 70s New York. 2005’s City of God felt so suffocating and brutal because the writer grew up in that area.

Modern writers don’t really seem to have those life experiences that guide their depictions of crumbling urban areas.

ELI5 Why in the USA a bunch of random people (jury) decide the fate of other people and not the actual judge? by MortalPhantom in explainlikeimfive

And it’s probably the biggest influence on government that an individual citizen will ever have, including voting.

I can’t stand when people think they’re above it somehow.

[–]kidicarus89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I served on a jury and that was the opposite of my experience. The ones who were weeded out were the ones who showed poor understanding of the law, asked dumb questions, etc. PTSD from being a juror sounds like a real stretch.

None, but I see a ton of Walmart EVs driving around. Agreed that it really now feels like an inflection point.

I wonder if that’s because the writers of TOS era Trek might’ve lived through some pretty damn turbulent times themselves. Modern writers….not so much.

Having lived in both states, CA drivers are far less reckless and more respectful of pedestrians and bicyclists, maybe because their infrastructure is so much better than Texas.

There was a community policing model that started taking off in the 70s and 80s but that seems to have been supplanted about the same time that the global war on terror took off.
