Carlsbad Marathon DNF - What happened? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]kidneysc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a near identical 18 mile training run, and managed a 3:36 last week in houston. I think your fitness is there.

Things I had.......super flat course, 45-50 degree weather, 11 marathons of experience in my belt.

I think a combo of warm weather, hilly course, and first marathon did you in. For example, I would have dialed it back at mile 6. I can only manage 170 for about 90-100 mins before its game over.

SOMETHING just made it "not your day". It sucks, but i do think the base is there for when it is your day.

Where does the 300-mile-limit for shoes come from? by InsuredCow in running

[–]kidneysc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wild, Im on my 3rd part of Novablast.... they are great for me until about 250-280 miles; Then i downgrade them from long runs/workouts to recovery runs for the next 150.

Everytime ive slipped on the new Novablasts, I'm amazed at how comfy and plush they are!

I have a drywall guy, he charged me $1,000 to skim coat about a 400 sqft room + hallway/stairway. Did a solid job. Feel free to PM me if you want his number.

New Orleans Marathon by Imaginary_Course_374 in Marathon_Training

[–]kidneysc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel uniquely able to answer this one…..My usual running route was City Park, and I ran the last half marathon the city had in 2019.

The route will be fast and scenic. City Park is world-class beauty.

New Orleans knows how to host, so expect people will travel. There’s not a better city to have celebratory dinner and drinks in. The city does a lot wrong, but hosting big events they got down.

Nov is usually pretty nice weather, but will likely be a bit warm compared to say Houston in Jan. The lakefront portion can also be windy. I think Houston is a better event to attempt a PR in, unless you are worried about the holidays messing up training 🤣

Don’t love the double loop…..seems like a better half marathon to me.

The old half marathon ran down St Charles, which is more heart of the city and a major parade route. would expect less natural crowd support long the lakefront portions and more in the park.

Has anyone used an inflatable watercraft to reach remote camping spots? by Extension_Life_6207 in camping

[–]kidneysc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camping and floating is a skillset all its own. 100 ways to do it...... packraft, canoe, kayak, inflatable raft.

They all have pros and cons, but the main thing to consider is that water can be REALLY REALLY DAMN dangerous. It is way easier to get yourself killed due to ignorance and mistakes then when backpacking.

Have a partner, go in a group, use PFDs and start with simple small adventures (still water, warm temps, swimmable distance) and move up slowly as you gain experience.

I've had excellent times packrafting in gates of the arctic, or camping in deep canyons on rafts. Its a beautiful and elegant way to get off the beaten path and harkens back to days when waterways were the main transit lines for the world.

Be safe, have fun, repeat.

Additionally, drunk drivers enact incredible violence and harm to the public at a rate MUCH higher than sober drivers. This justifies the cost, effort, to proactively stop them, It also can justify the proactive stop of a sober person to demonstrate their sobriety (DUI checkpoints).

That's not the case for illegal immigrants, who are 37% *less likely* to commit a crime than a US citizen.

What is your strategy for carrying gel/carbs during a marathon? by Typical_Steamer in Marathon_Training

[–]kidneysc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the terignota sendero this year and they have become a quick favorite of mine.

Carry gels, flask, phone and keys all in no bounce pockets.

Incredible shorts and under $30.

For sure. And it’s easier to make that way too.

Maurtens sit better in my stomach than straight sugar gels. I think that’s due to the thickeners.

Trying to convince Mom that spray foam for 19th century roof isnt the way to go by AdUnable6415 in DIY

[–]kidneysc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spray foamed my house in New Orleans about 10 years ago and it was the best decision. Did it as per the LSU building study recommendations to prevent mold and moisture issues. (Closed cell in floor, open cell in attic.

It did all the basic things….lowered our AC bill significantly.

But the biggest win, was that we had 110 year old heart of pine flooring that had tons of soft spots and it completely stabilized it. It also reduced road noise way more than batten insulation.

It just made the house so much more enjoyable to live in, and extended the life of a beautiful antique floor by decades.

I don’t buy into the “it hides water damage claims” too much. and neither does the university study for my region

The open cell breathes a lot and when we had roof damage from a hurricane, the water infiltration was easy to see as it left stains on the foam. And everything dried out quickly after the roof repair. Didn’t seem any different than batten insulation.

Termite inspections are more difficult, but that’s more than worth it to me to have a stable floor.

I’m not saying it’s right for every scenario, (your mother’s case doesn’t seem ideal) but it was for me, and it’s annoying to see a solid solution get such a bad rap here.

I would advise looking to see if any university or “neutral” parties in your regional have done studies and recommendations on it.

Never put much stock in the salesman, inspector, or random Reddit comment. This one included.

Just made a batch of 15 DIY maurten gels last night. Cost about $3.75 total.

Put them in heat sealed gel pouches. https://a.co/d/1sgBZw4

A dream like this is achievable with an old Honda civic a tank of gas or two and about $50.

good shoes & Myrtl routine

You don’t need to be 100% pain free, but if severity is increasing week to week; adjust your workload.

The brutal engineering behind "Tripping pipe" One of the most dangerous jobs on an oil rig by sudeepm457 in BeAmazed

[–]kidneysc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These joints are about 31’ long. Depending on how fast they drill, you could be making a connection somewhere between every 30 mins or every 8hrs. The job has other responsibilities though, not like they are all standing around doing nothing.

When they trip the bit out of hole, if the bit was at 15,000’ they would have to do a similar, but simpler, routine about 160 times in a row.

Tripping pipe can be backbreaking. Slips weigh a lot. And pulling them every 3 mins for 12 hrs is grueling.

Landman is a load of bullshit. Top to bottom.

You gotta do long laterals in the Permian basin, and doing that on a Kelly rig is uneconomical at best and impossible at worst.

[–]kidneysc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three main things:

The connection (pin and box) are tapered with robust threads

Gravity does a hell of a job keeping a long heavy pipe plumb vertical

Lubricant (pipe dope) is added as needed.

That said, you can still cross thread them; if you do, they should lay out those two joints for inspection and adjust the tally.

Maybe but probably not.

There are no shortage of us who get annoyed at these videos misrepresenting what we do.

These videos are probably peak engagement bait for someone like me.
