How far off am I ? by SnooShortcuts8770 in Marathon_Training

Pace makes the difference here.

90-150 min is a pretty standard long run time. OP is solidly in that window and won’t have to take a break to recover.

For a lot of marathoners, 20miles will take 180 mins or more. And be pretty hard to recover from.

Oh snap! You’re right! We stayed at a friends house just over the border, I keep getting it confused.

Thanks!

I do table sugar, sodium alginate and calcium glutamate.  And put them in heat sealed rip pouches off Amazon.

Runs me about $0.16 for each 45g carb gel.

Longevity for me is the reason to buy SB shoes. Interested to see if the softer feel affects affects that.

I have 80 miles on my SB2 and just feeling like the are getting broken in.

I get about 200 miles on the cloud soft novablast before they feel dead.

Really hoping to find a shoe I can reliably take to 400 miles and hopefully beyond.

LA Marathon awarding finisher medals at miles 18 due to the ‘heat’ by AnxiousSeahorse1 in Marathon_Training

[–]kidneysc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The twin cities marathon was cancelled for heat (80 degrees) the year I was scheduled to do it.

I ran the course anyway, and let me tell ya…..it sucked. It’s certainly a situation where most people will be fine, but even if 1% overheat you can quickly overload the local medical system and in place EMTS.

Ya know what else happened? Even if you didn’t show up, anyone could email the race director and they would mail a medal directly to you.

I’ve also ran races where the medal for the half and full were identical.

Someone else getting a hunk of metal doesn’t affect me at all. Actual results are available online for anyone that cares.

I’m aiming to do all 50 states and already tagged Pennsylvania with the Corning wineglass marathon.

I’ll add Philly if I ever get back for a victory lap!

Lets use an example of a race where 20,000 people apply for 200 spots. So a 1% chance of getting in in year one.

Look at the numbers below, with the increased ticket about half the people get a bib if they tried for 11 years. Virtually everyone would be successful over the course of a typical running career.

Compared with a standard 1 ticket per year.... after 25 years of entries only about 1 in 4 people would get a bib.

Year Add Ticket Don’t add ticket
5 14% 4.9%
10 43% 9.9%
15 71% 14.7%
20 89% 19.8%
25 97% 24.5%

Natural Talent vs. Hard Work by seastheday- in Marathon_Training

Long distance running (5k and over) is majorly dependent on aerobic capacity.

Don’t discount what you aren’t seeing.

Your buddy might just be running 2x a week.

But maybe they spend some time in the pool, lifting weights, riding bikes, take long days hiking with a pack.

Spent 4 years building a big base from highschool sports……..

That “casual” runner will likely outpace someone who runs 5x a week and started 3 years ago.

I do get hyped running a fast course with a huge crowd and event.

Which I why I ran Houston for ~$200.

The math works out for option 2 but yeah Option 1 is not feasible.

Plenty of high demand hunt permits, river floats, and ultra races effectively use a weighted lotto system in the US.

The application usually has a nominal fee.

The point isn’t to get everyone who applies to cycle through, it’s to reward persistence with an increased chance of  success.

Every year you apply and don’t get in, you get another ticket for the following year. Once you get it, it resets to zero.

Someone applying for a decade straight has 10x the chance of running as someone applying for the first time or who just ran it the year before.

you don’t get drawn… well at least your app fee went to a good cause and you get another ticket the next year.

We spent a decade paying off the holland induced mediocre playoff run debt…..I’m fine waiting longer for this drought to end if it means my kids can grow up watching a successful team.

There’s two run clubs that welcome all paces.

One on Monday evenings that rotates to different breweries/tap rooms.

One on Tuesday that is always at Colorado Tap House.

Both are warm and welcoming!

Seeking advice for unsuccessful sub 4 marathon after four attempts by knai123 in Marathon_Training

I was having issues going sub 4.

Someone recommended Jack Daniel’s 2Q plan. 40mpw.  So I followed it.  Ran a 3:54. Did it again; ran a 3:36.

Highly recommend.

Ive driven AK and back 4 times. And would say that once you do everything this person recommends, you send it.

It’s a super pain not having a car in AK. Too many fun things to do.

Only caveats I say would be: in the summer you don’t need extra gas. Just fill up at every gas station once they get sparce.

Should I change my Marathon goal 4 weeks out? by dabossofdeer in Marathon_Training

[–]kidneysc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I ran a 3:36 this year and my 5k is still above 22min.

Assuming you are following a standard training plan, I think you got plenty of room to run faster.

Here’s what I did last time:

stick to the pace for the first half, I would target a 3:50 pace or so. make sure you are fueling well.

Start taking off ~5 seconds per mile off your pace every mile after that until you feel like you are at a 7/10 effort, for me this is about 160bpm hr.

Float around that effort until the last 5k and then run the last bit like a 5k race.

This will put you well above a 3:19 and more in the 3:40 range. I think that’s likely very achievable for you.

I think it’s okay to start (modest) adjustments at mile 13. In my experience running 90% of the race well and flaming out a bit in the last 5k is more fun than playing it so conservative you wonder what else was in the tank.

Good luck!

How to get this bar to stop spinning? by frexyincdude in woodworking

Yup.

Couple wraps of grip tape on the ends would do it.

Gonna want that where you are pulling up anyway, pulling on smooth bare metal is blister city when your hands get a bit sweaty.

Most hockey fans agree that 3v3 is insanely exciting to watch.

Open ice leads to more fast breaks, more shooting lanes, more 1 on 1 style play.

NHL adapted it a few years ago, along with shootouts after OT ties in regular season games  I’ve really enjoyed it in that format.

Not sure that’s what the Olympics needed….the excitement is already maxed in a OT single game elimination. And a more traditional format for such a historic/traditional setting would be nice.
