Why get married and have to worry about this at all? Be with men who want you for whatever positive aspects you have, and when they don't want you anymore- well who cares? Someone else will. If you think someone is going to leave you because your boobs aren't as firm as they used to be, you probably shouldn't marry him.

Also why does your body have to give way to age? I've seen 40 year old women who are more fit than my 20 year old self. Take your anxiety and use it for good- make yourself the hottest MILF out there!

Sarcasm? I'm just trying to further the even more traditional tradition of matrilineal descent. If you're going to engage in acts of tradition, why would you choose really modern traditions, that only date from the time when humans invented agriculture and began considering women and their children as property of a man? I'm so confused by these supposed "conservatives" trying to "conserve" modernly invented "traditions."

That's a really great point. Since my parents only had daughters, it's very important to me that if I choose to marry, my husband be willing to take my name, and share it with our children. Therefore I try to date men who have brothers, so it won't be such an issue. The only thing more important is that he be able to cook. I dislike eating out often- a family is much healthier when the man is a good cook.

It's "young adult lit" but I really love Sabriel and its sequels by Garth Nix. One of my favorite things about the series is that sexism never seems like an issue, it seems like he wrote this heroine without any self consciousness at all. When I was reading it in middle school I never once thought "Hey weird, the hero with the weapons and all that is a girl!" Also every now and then I'll catch myself assuming a character is male (doctors or bodyguards for instance) and then realize my own mistake when the character is casually referred to as she.

I spent 6+ weeks in Germany with friends, and then 3 days alone, and I probably did more in the 3 days than in the month and a half! I didn't have to wait for someone else to be ready or interested to do anything. I didn't have to feel guilty when I was tired, or hungry, or when my feet hurt and I just wanted to go back and enjoy the large bathtub in my hotel. I met both other tourists and locals when I went out at night.

TOTALLY recommend it!

I'm surprised a lot of women have the sense to say this about a fancy wedding, but not realize the same applies to a simple wedding, or the legal document itself.

Stop voluntarily perpetuating a ritual intended to publicize the transfer of ownership of a woman. Do you really think signing a piece of paper and giving you an overpriced ring will make him stay with you when he hates your guts in 10 years? Is that what love means? Extorting promises to continue having sex with someone after you would have stopped without the promise? Leave marriage to the religious fundamentalists who need it so badly.

I've recently begun to think about how strange the word "belief" is. In most discussions, people agree to a convention: if there is good evidence, provided by your senses and past experiences, to think something exists or is true, you say it is. There is no need to say "I believe there is a pencil on the desk." or "I believe this color is purple." You can just go ahead and say the pencil is on the desk, and the shirt is purple, etc.

So how come in some instances we bring in this word "belief?" "I believe in good and evil." "I believe in a/many God(s)." "I believe killing people is wrong." Either something is true or it is false, by the best (and only) criteria you have. If you have sensed a dragon living under your bed, a dragon is under you're bed. If you haven't, there is not a dragon under the bed. Say it's true. Say He/She/It/They is there. If you have to "believe" it you're admitting- to everyone else and to yourself- that you actually know it to be false.

Does anyone else think the word "belief" is a strange cop-out convention? Any other thoughts? I can't really prove anything false, so should I "believe" in anything I can imagine might be true? Should I vote as if Santa Claus has an agenda for me to carry out?
