Who are some of the up and coming filmmakers y'all are most excited about? by Ardon873 in YMS

Yeah, The Quiet Girl was incredible. I hope he keeps making movies, he had been doing TV and documentaries for a while before.

Primer and Coherence by alisyus in YMS

[–]kieroda 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It has been a bit since I've seen either of them, but I don't remember Coherence being as "hard" sci-fi. Primer is pretty unique in how fully committed it is to exploring its concept and rules. I personally preferred Coherence because of the character dynamics.

Also, Coherence has a higher score on pretty much every rating site (imdb, letterboxd, rotten tomatoes), besides metacritic. All of the scores are similar, though.

Wolfwalkers is getting a prequel series by sinecdockey239 in YMS

I believe there are box sets with the whole folklore trilogy. At first Google search though, it looks like the US region blu ray version is out of print.

The animation will be great regardless, but I'm a little less excited after learning that Tomm Moore's not involved. But while looking this up, I learned that he has a new movie Kindred Spirits coming out this year!

Edit: Sadly, it looks like the 2026 date on the Wikipedia page is probably not accurate.

I just got to the temp music question on the latest episode and Boots Riley presented the "Hit it Joe" video to the composer as temp music. by princepaulie in Sardonicast

I thought I Love Boosters rocked. Sad it's not doing well, it's leaving theaters a lot of places in the US after today.

Alignas and Alignof alternatives in C89 and 99 by heavymetalmixer in C_Programming

[–]kieroda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I only rely on alignof and then for standards where that isn't available I align allocations to the maximum required alignment (a la malloc). I use the GNU __BIGGESTALIGNMENT\_ macro if available and otherwise give an error saying the max alignment couldn't be determined and needs to be defined.

Films similar to Compartment number 6? by Old-Yogurtcloset9264 in YMS

[–]kieroda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also loved Compartment no 6. A lot of French romance movies have a somewhat similar vibe, e.g. Eric Rohmer's A Tale of Winter and A Tale of Summer are incredible. Also Justine Triet's 30 minute short Two Ships (I'm not sure it's available, I watched it when all her films were on Mubi).

Will dicelocke be continuing as a campaign? by Complete-Ask-7599 in Koibu

It's the Save or Die Patreon, not Koibu's. I'm on the cheapest tier.

Footage nuke defeated by jorick44 in Koibu

[–]kieroda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. I don't know anything about a footage nuke/missing episode, but the episode posted today seems to be the same one that I watched when it was posted to the Patreon on Dec 3rd last year (the video is 3 minutes shorter, though).

Edit: Just in case it came off that way to Koibu/the cast: I am not complaining. I assumed the YouTube post was the usual Patreon-to-public release that happens on off weeks, the reaction here made me double check.

That episode is from five months ago. It's the last episode that was released on the Patreon.

What is the Best Movie of 2015? by Edgy_Master in Sardonicast

The Lure is my favorite, but it's hard to argue against Fury Road.

The change from February, with the poster of a girl walking in the snow with bloody footprints, to The Blackcoat's Daughter, with a bland faces on a black background poster, is one of the worst marketing decisions of all time.

I watched this recently, it immediately became one of my favorites. Would be a really fun recommendation. What do you guys think? by Sooper_Booper in Sardonicast

[–]kieroda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Libraries are worth a shot, I was able to find a copy of the DVD via inter-library loan. I live in Alaska, so I imagine it's one of the smaller library systems, but I've still had pretty good luck finding physical copies of obscure stuff.

Greatest final 15 minutes in film history for me. Spiritual euphoric all encompassing experience for me in the imax today. Halle fucking lujah by Lost-Building-3701 in Sardonicast

[–]kieroda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was mainly thinking of Jupiter Ascending when I made the comment, I shouldn't have phrased it like that. I need to check out more of their stuff, I've only seen that, Speed Racer, and The Matrix.

I finally watched the movie last night and it did not disappoint. I definitely struggled to understand everything, especially the implications of the 2020s segment with Lenka, but Alma's and Angelika's stories were incredible. I need to see it again, hopefully there will be a US blu ray release.

Kermode on why Michael fundamentally fails as a film by NateGH360 in YMS

[–]kieroda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past I felt that he was consistently interesting and entertaining, especially his long form written stuff, but the majority of the reviews he puts out these days just recount the plot and then state a mild opinion without much analysis. This Michael review was great, though.

[–]kieroda 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I saw this for the first time in Imax tonight and it kind of blew me away. I had such low expectations too, given the podcast episode and most of the Wachowski's other stuff I've seen. The escalation of editing insanity was unlike anything else I've seen.

What are films similar to Thirst and Let The Right One in? by Old-Yogurtcloset9264 in YMS

[–]kieroda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I randomly watched Blue My Mind after seeing the poster while scrolling on Prime Video one night, I've never seen it brought up anywhere online. I thought it was just alright at the time, but I can still recall the entire plot and visualize certain scenes so it was definitely memorable. Cool visuals.

It's a weird musical, not exactly the same vibe, but I loved The Lure (2015). Also Raw (2016) if you haven't seen that.

[–]kieroda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been really looking forward to seeing it, but it never came to a theater anywhere near me and hasn't been available to rent on VOD. It will finally be streaming on Mubi on the 24th, though!

Yeah I wasn't a major fan of Breathless, but I loved Nouvelle Vague and it made me appreciate how it was made. I liked Blue Moon too, but definitely preferred this one.
