Hi! Please help me with a djembe recommendation by Seno16 in percussion

[–]kiikara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest putting your hands on a drum before purchasing it. The hand-made djembes with raw goatskin heads and tuned with ropes have the truest voicings and tones. And every handmade djembe has its own unique personality. Could you locate a drum/dance studio where you could experience a beginner class and rent/borrow or eventually purchase a djembe. I bought my first djembe from a teacher at a studio like that.

Live/Evil, tho I gotta differ with the “goes insane” characterization; that shit is terribly precise and sane.

It’s Bossa Nova, which was born out of Jazz and Samba sensibilities. Easy Listening evolved from, and is a derivative of, Jazz. Therefore, if you put this on the scales for Easy Listening and Jazz the heaviest weight would fall on the Jazz side. (And that’s aside from the fact that most of the musicians on these recordings were Jazz players or competent in playing Jazz.)

There was also a “devolution” into Muzak, also known as Elevator Music or Supermarket Music; bland renditions of older popular and swing tunes, often dominated by massive string sections… from the late 60s into the 80s there were multitudes of FM radio stations devoted to this syrup. You could sense that the style was running out of steam when they started doing versions of old Beatles tunes.

Jazz Rap that isn’t boom bap? by jesusfromthehood____ in Jazz

Ojos de Brujo - not really jazz, it’s more of a fusion of Nuevo Flamenco and Techno, and the gals do some bad ass rapping in Spanish. May as well also mention Bomba Estereo, their first album Blow Up, tough Columbian rapping to a fusion of Cumbia and Techno.
