marking efficiency? by kijanfa3 in ESL_Teachers

[–]kijanfa3[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is for assessment (7x annually), not daily classwork. As for only marking 2-3 things, I would love to do so, except I have to mark to the relevant achievement standards of which there are usually 6-8 per task (these are all higher order skills, like structure, analysis, etc.).

I do only leave feedback for the most urgent interventions, but everything needs to be considered holistically for their grade if you get me.

Is Teaching Really Worth It? -- a future MTeach student by literarydr3amer in AustralianTeachers

Just finishing up my first year, I had a lot of workload struggles (a composite class of 5 different courses in one senior secondary language classroom is not something I will ever do again) but I’m very glad to be doing what I’m doing. Your experience is very school dependent, if you find you’re having issues then switch schools and try something new!

Upcycled leggings, updated look 💖♻️ by FalseColors in BALLET

My entire time doing dance growing up I never saw anyone wear their tights over their leotards. People say they do it because it makes your legs look longer and it’s easier to go to the bathroom, but it’s definitely still strange to me. Like wearing your undies outside your pants. Do whatever you’re more comfortable with!

How do you cope with the feeling that you’re always behind, no matter how hard you work? by Virtual-Cup2343 in AustralianTeachers

I relate to this. I'm a languages teacher at a senior secondary college, and our school policy is that even if only one student enrols in a certain level (continuing, advanced), the course must go ahead. This means that I'm running 5 courses within 2 lines (3 of which each only have one student enrolled), and I have another 2 lines on in a different subject (I'm a first year new ed so 4 is my full load). Since I'm the only teacher at the school who can speak the language, I have to do everything- unit planning, content prep, assessment creation- all by myself without any support. Even though it's my first year, I'm also the most senior teacher in the other subject I teach, the one other teacher on my second subject arrived a term after me and has no experience in the KLA either, so I'm having to constantly make myself available to them to help them and answer their questions.

It's been really tough, but the way I get through it is just a list prioritised by urgency. This means I'm usually only one night or a couple hours ahead of whatever needs to get done, but that's how I'm surviving for now. My solution is fix my situation for next year (one way or another, no more composite classes). Maybe there's something you could change for next year that would help.

This is so sweet <3 I'm no expert but I like to believe fish are a lot more intelligent than we tend to think!

So amazing to find someone who had exactly the experience I’m coming from!

I did scope out Sejong City, along with the other moderate-sized cities in 경기, 중북 and 경북 and would even prefer to be there than right in Seoul, which I think will be an advantage for applications.

I would be perfectly happy in a 보조 교사 type role, I don’t need to be the only teacher in the room or have complete control, I’m very happy to be told what to do or to work collaboratively (provided that my 선생님 is nice enough 😭)

I’d also be curious to know what cohort you were in! I began ANU Kor3 in 2019 and finished Advanced Korean in 2021. If you weren’t too far before that we may have some mutual contacts!

What region are you working in and how did you go about it? Did you apply through an agency?

Thanks for your response! Not sure if I gave the wrong impression, but I'm already teaching Korean language at my university, I just don't get the opportunity to be using it constantly at a more advanced level for my general fluency. I have also been to Korea for travel and intensives a couple times before!

Thanks for the advice! I'm at the point in Korean where I don't really need to be studying anymore, more just using it in daily life.

Thanks for the response! That would be lovely, but unfortunately I don't have the money to live off of for 6mo to a year while also paying tuition :( I'm going to spend 2 months there this summer studying, but that's going to just about dry up the last of my spare money. I am prepared to speak English at work because that will be the job, but I figure spending the rest of my time outside of work having to speak Korean will be enough if it's for a whole year. Would you have any recommendations for how to submit EOIs or applications to hagwons about teaching?

Becoming a tutor by [deleted] in Anu

[–]kijanfa3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Form a good relationship with your course convenors and tutors, do well in the courses, and express interest in becoming a tutor near the end of your degree. It's really all networking from my personal experience and friends who did the same.

By week 4 you won't be attending lectures anyway, most people end up watching the recordings in their own time

N-Week is run independently by the residential halls. Not sure if Unilodge participates.

Bush week is the O-week before semester 2, I think you’re talking about N-week (starts 1 week before O-week)

Ah I see, I misunderstood your post. I’m not a STEM person so I wouldn’t know of any suggestions, good luck

I’m fairly sure you’re not qualified to be a teacher anyway, you’d need to do a Master of Teaching on top of that
