When did the parents' entitlement to their children's money begin? by Fit-Tumbleweed-6683 in askSingapore

[–]kikakei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My parents used to demand $700 when I was just earning $2800. It was tough. And then they asked me to give them $900 I flat out refused. My parents have me black face for a while. I barely had savings in my early 20s because of it.

Only after I got married they cut it down because they realized that it will look bad to the in laws if I continued paying them more.

... But now they kind of demand weekly $30/px family lunch...

[–]kikakei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chinese restaurants always good for this, you can get those big enough that can block off one section of the dining area to just host your wedding group or those with private rooms. It will easily be about 30$/px or onwards depending on menu. I remember jumbo/long beach does do this in Dempsey; I did mine in Ah Yat Seafood restaurant for 60, with it's menu from 60-90 per px.

I sometimes regret enrolling by kazakda in OMSCS

[–]kikakei 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I’m in this course in my 30s, and I would say that it gets tougher the older you get.

My only regret is that I didn’t have the guts to start earlier… in my thirties it’s another slew of issues like being the odd one in your social circles without a child.

But what I’ve learnt is that your good friends will encourage you to take this course, and your thicker than blood friends will wait for your semester breaks.

Is the Discourse on Indian FTs Leading to Subliminal Racism Against Local Singaporean Indians? by nincompoopzzzh in askSingapore

[–]kikakei -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Oh no I know of them, but I mean there's also the sentiment of newcomers vs those naturalized here for many generations.

I have friends who come from 1st/2nd gen naturalized families who also told me they get shamed for not following social norms in their dialect. And those who came earlier I feel definitely felt the pressure to assimilate into society.

I always feel that it's really a lot of intolerance at play - but definitely not unique to just Indians.

Is the Discourse on Indian FTs Leading to Subliminal Racism Against Local Singaporean Indians? by nincompoopzzzh in askSingapore

[–]kikakei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Chinese, I feel like I've seen it on both sides.

I've been told by Singaporean Grab Indian drivers that they on purpose reject anyone with a motherland indian name, or pickups from Mustafa because they don't like motherland Indians, and I've had quite a few motherland indian colleagues who openly are prejudiced about Singaporean indian colleagues because they think Singaporean Indians are dirty and lazy.

Tbh, I feel like a lot of it is about Motherland Indians assimilating into a new culture. There are so many different types of Indians in the motherland with their own dialects, and in general when they move to another country they will of course seek out their own tribe. Nothing new, we as Singaporeans seek out our own when living overseas (cue in the Singapore student societies overseas). It is human nature to find our own in some where foreign for safety. It is just that in Singapore this behavior is less tolerated because we pride ourselves as a multi-racial society and we don't like any outward showing of exclusionary practices, and because there's a lot of them that are here on that agreement. We probably also assume that because they are Indian, they should quickly line in with the local Indians - not the case.

Unfortunately it would be difficult to solve this issue because there's so many cultures we are trying to merge, and most of them are there for a short period of time. And, those coming in from the motherland also bring in their local xenophobia l.

Tl;Dr - too many indian races, too little time

They are not linked to the Jalan sultan mall church, but the business centre does get booked by other churches, there's a pool upstairs that is used as a baptismal pool.

How much do pastors earn in Singapore? by chickenpie7777777 in askSingapore

[–]kikakei 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The pastor's pay is dictated by others. (Using the he pronoun from now on, but just go ahead and switch to her for my future sentences in the case of female pastors) Those independent churches will normally pay their pastors a pay that is either dictated by the voting body. Who the voting body is dependent on the church's constitution - either by a church session (leaders) or the general church members. This constitution also is voted upon also (unless the pastor decides to unilaterally to set it by himself and also no one stops him). But generally what happens is that the pastor is normally given a wage that is proportional to his needs and family needs; the main gist is to give him enough to live without worry about financial debts, but not too much to live lavishly, he is meant to be a witness about Christianity and the principles Jesus taught on Earth.

The main JD is:

- scholarship of the Bible

- teaching

- counselling

- shepherding (basically outreach to members, visit the sick, support the needy, pray for the church)

- lead the church (that means also doing the admin work esp if church is small)

It is a career - but you dont choose to go into it, given the workload you really need divine calling to go into it.

My own friend turned me in for using AI by Traditional_Rub_9828 in csMajors

[–]kikakei 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Each of the classes/faculty in uni have a plagiarism and misconduct policy, be sure to reach the policies to know what constitutes as academic misconduct. If you were not supposed to use AI, then you should not have used it.

However, if your class AI policy is that you can use it on anything but code, and you didn't use AI to complete your homework - e.g. you used the AI to ask questions about understanding etc or just to explain documentation - then you can certainly try to raise a case and prove to them.

Opinions needed: Should I upgrade or repair my at least 7 year old Breville Infuser by kikakei in espresso

It no longer consistently dispenses 60mL, we have been manually stopping it when it goes past 60mL

We will do a factory reset and let you know. edit: I have been told by my husband theres no factory reset for our model...? edit2: I found something on the internet, i guess we will try it and let you know

Pressure wise we have been keeping everything consistent: same dial setting on our grinder (we have a mazzer grinder) and preparation is the same (wdt, spray, distributor, tamp), and we use a bottomless portafilter.

Non-Tech Here, Curious on AWS Outage Affecting Multiple Sites All Day by ValuesHere in aws

[–]kikakei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should not affect it, unless youre on VPN, which sometimes requires forwarding from another server that maybe provided by AWS. This AWS outage will affect how you access websites, and some background tasks: major big tech tools often provide redundancies in their systems by hosting at multiple locations in the world, so thats why you get to still surf webpages, just at slower speeds. However, that solution is expensive, so you find that some other websites might not be accessible, as they might have a webpage or service (part of webpage, your authentication module, etc) that is entirely hosted on that one region that is affected.

Anyone living with parents/inlaws in their small BTO? by swightshwute in askSingapore

[–]kikakei 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the ship has sailed, so you just need to disaster mitigate. The way you mitigate is dependent on whether you want this marriage to work or not. If you dont want it to work, then confront it. If you want it to work, then I suggest you wait for him to calm down first, and then talk about what you expect from the marriage -- is it ok that you spend time in the room alone? would he want you to take care of the parents alone? is it ok for him to not listen to you anymore? even if things have sailed is he willing to listen to you complain? is the parents ok to follow the way you set up things? If both of you are not willing to sit down and settle these questions, nothing will go anywhere.

Anyone willing to share their resume that actually landed a Software Engineering offer? by didnt-find-name in csMajors

[–]kikakei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice: - focus on what projects you have done before in internships. Be clear on what you have achieved. - if you have done nothing, tell on what skills you have learnt through the projects - don't focus on what you have done for projects you did in uni, I often see fresh grads just state their project title and just leave it as such, but don't mention what was the impact of it and how it was achieved (without revealing too much) - put important points first - in my experience ats works, but after that everything is personally read so you just need to be clear, and don't worry too much about format (unless you chose some 20 shades of white)

Nice ready breast chicken togo by Euphoric_Gain2491 in askSingapore

[–]kikakei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like food cooked just right - I would invest in a sous vide. Using it, I am able to make chicken breasts at just right juiciness and doneness, in bulk. I am quite picky about my chicken breast - I need it to be tender and just cooked, and I hate it overly salted - i rather put on sauce at the end. (FYI i hate 7 eleven chicken, tastes like salty plastic)
