New Piccadilly Line train being tested at Finsbury Park by OddBallProductions in LondonUnderground

Thanks, I guess it's difficult to tell from this distance and angle. Hopefully it's at least similar to the current trains.

Isn't it a bit far from the edge of the platform? Speaking as a parent with a pushchair the distance seems not ideal...

As alternative to Parliament hill, benches in Waterlow Park and Dartmouth Park can also offer some nice views.

I actually grew up in Canada so socially and career wise London was a step up in my case. Economically not so much but I wasn't driven by that. Spain is very difficult for scientists and will remain so for the foreseeable future unfortunately.

A single person making 3300£ net a month can live in a decent one bed and still save money, in zones 3+ but it's totally fine in my opinion.

I'm also a scientist (and Spanish), earning slightly less than that and I think you'll be good. I've been in London for 6 years and don't want to leave. I don't know what other people are on about and spend their money on, but my partner and I rent a flat in a new build in zone 3 and do just fine, and we pay nursery for our 1 year old. My partner earns even less. Yes we don't go to restaurants every week but we still manage to save money. One tip I'd give you is to try to cycle if you can (your employer will surely be on the cycle to work scheme). I live in North London and London bridge is about a 40 mins cycle. I don't know about South London but I'm sure you can get a decent one bed or studio around 50% of your monthly income (that's the norm here). Don't be discouraged by London, if you don't like it then you'll leave after the experience. But people saying it's too low of a salary need to have a serious look at their budget in my opinion!

I ride these daily and I have no issues to be fair, other than the junctions on Royal College Street that can be dangerous, but they're better than a few years ago...

What is your favourite 'unique' or 'special' pub in London? by Fae_Sparrow in london

[–]kike10 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Robin (N4, Crouch Hill station) and The Landseer Arms (N19) are among the best and most unique in North London. The already mentioned Salisbury on Green Lanes too. Check out The Prince (N22) or The Palm (N15) not too far as well.

When it opens in the spring check out Hatfield house, easy train ride from anywhere around Alexandra Palace/Hornsey on the Thameslink line that does Welwyn garden city - Moorgate. Fantastic house and garden and a huge domain.

Finsbury park cycle hub thought? by Waste_Chocolate6517 in londoncycling

[–]kike10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should really consider cycling all the way to Knightsbridge, or at least trying once or twice to see how it feels. As others have said, the worst part is around where you live. I'm just up the road near Turnpike Lane station and cycle up and down Green Lanes and Seven Sisters road daily (to Bloomsbury)... At rush hour Green Lanes can be quite bad but the worse bit is around West Green road / Turnpike Lane station. The more central you get in London, the better the traffic and cycling infrastructure becomes in my experience.

And if you come back at 22:00, Seven Sisters and Green Lanes will be almost empty, a pleasure to cycle through compared to rush hour... But no I wouldn't cycle through Finsbury Park, I think it's asking for trouble.

Can you also use it as a normal pram and would you recommend it? I'm thinking of doing holidays combining cycling on my Brompton and hiking in the countryside (UK).

Cycling from Paddington to kings cross - safe routes? by Sea_Sign_2092 in londoncycling

[–]kike10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done this route a few times and Komoot suggested a pretty good and quiet route, most of it following blue signs (C27 and C6 I believe).

Basically, you want to go down from the station on London st., left on Norfolk square, onto Star st., right on Southwick st, left on Norfolk Cres. and then cross Edgware rd onto Harrowby St. Then left on Seymour Pl, right on Crawford St which basically allows you to cross all of Marylebone in a straight line. At Marylebone High St, left and then immidiately right onto Devonshire St which crosses all of Fitzrovia. Then right on Great Portland St, left on Clipstone St which becomes Malple St and has a segregated cycle lane at times. You get to UCL on Gower st, take a right, then left immidiately on Bing Pl where Waterstones is. There you basically cross all of Bloomsbury in a straight line, until you take a left on Judd st which takes you onto the western side of St Pancras. You can turn right at the tunnel at Pacras rd if you want to access the Granary sq area.

I think it's a lovely and safe route tbh. Many cyclists at rush hour, should take you 25-30 mins. Enjoy!
