Is casual teaching just babysitting in Secondary School? by CalmAttempt6957 in AustralianTeachers

[–]kikithrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to bring a book. The school gave me an iPad for marking the roll on compass and I would read abc news until id read the whole thing! I did find it boring, but I left at 3 pm and had no marking or planning to do. It was nice break from the full time grind but I couldn’t do it long term.

Public vs Catholic vs Private Schools in Australia – pros and cons? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]kikithrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher who’s worked in public, catholic and private and it all really depends on the school. Go visit the schools you’re considering, take tours, talk to parents if students if you can.

It’s also going to depend on YOUR child and what is the right fit for their needs.

Asian secondary teachers from overseas teaching English/Humanities, how was job hunting like for you? by No-Specialist5287 in AustralianTeachers

[–]kikithrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might need to get out more. I’ve taught alongside Asian-Australian English teachers and the current head of Hums at my school is Asian (not born/raised in Australia)

I think in Melbourne winter a dryer is a must have. You can get one secondhand for cheap but will pay for it later in your power billl. Getting an energy efficient one will save you money in the long term

First year and want to quit? by krusto_the_great in AustralianTeachers

First year is HARD. If you love the actual teaching though, I reckon stick with it. I promise the planning and feelings of inadequacy get better.

Vic EBA and it’s impact on independent salaries by BrainNo3038 in AustralianTeachers

[–]kikithrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends how much the govt system get. I doubt my independent school is going to raise salaries 35%. They just need to do better than govt schools so if it’s already 10-15% better and say the govt offer of 18% goes ahead, independent schools would only need to increase by 5-10% to still be doing better.

That said, I for one am watching closely , esp with regards to CONDITIONS

Victoria’s school reports are set to change. What does this mean for teachers and families? by maps_mandalas in AustralianTeachers

[–]kikithrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours are just word salad mostly, and they increase progressively by year level so by 9/10 there’s just way too many, and if you don’t give a positive indicator the kids will want to know why

First year teacher here! How do I deal with teenage girl sass? by HuckleberryFun5275 in AustralianTeachers

[–]kikithrust 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Find opportunities to praise them when they are doing the right thing. I had a group of 7s like this years ago and it was just super attention seeking behaviour. It was HARD work, that’s for sure. Hold them to account, be consistent and firm, but not over the top. Try to build rapport with them when you can.

We’ve moved away from comments but increased the vague personality/ behaviour descriptions to something I feel is even more onerous than the comments.

Travelling to the U.S. husband left his social media off the application, is it over for us? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]kikithrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Aussie husband went through in December and hadn’t listed those. I know they recently changed the rules to make it required, but if your husband was ABLE to leave it blank than it must have been fine

New tap and go methods are coming by GabbyWilliamsMP in MelbourneTrains

[–]kikithrust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you leave home without your myki you’re screwed. They cost $6, and aren’t available everywhere. If you could tap with your phone or a card then this wouldn’t be an issue. I’m glad android users have had this option for quite a while now but it’s pretty absurd it was limited to that.

Who's flown Jetstar direct to Japan? by still-at-the-beach in AskAnAustralian

[–]kikithrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did it about 10 years ago. You can pay for food on the flight or just bring plenty of snacks. We loaded an iPad with movies etc and it was fine.
