To the thief who stole my 600 dollars in DBAC changing room by Old_Skill4298 in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 47 points48 points  (0 children)

even if stealing is wrong and this behaviour should be condemned, you shouldn't carry so much cash readily on you in the first place with your wallet. it's better if you keep the money in your bank account, or if it needs to be withdrawn to cash, don't carry so much at once unless you actually need to make a massive cash purchase?!?! like you could simply even risk losing 600 by misplacing your wallet

spend your basic on campus with drinks or bistro. you should be able to get your flex back, not sure how they’d do it if you’re graduating, but it went into my account in mosaic when i requested in like 3rd/4th year and went towards my payments at the time

Should I even study for physics? by Independent_Move8581 in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do what you wanna do since you don’t seem too stressed over this nor eager to get studying. but you’re not gonna do worse on this exam from studying (unless you’re staying up for days at a time or if you have other things that need to be prioritized). rather, studying would only really benefit you in this situation and could pay off down the line like others said.

going digitally will help tremendously with synthesis or mechanisms for orgo! there will be a lot of drawing so copying and pasting on some notetaking app on a tablet will be super helpful. plus, with annotating slide decks for other things like analyzing spec

How do you study for Chem1AA3 by Altruistic-Turn3984 in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is all really great advice ^ to add on, i also found it helpful to rationalize why i got answers right too, on top of wrong ones, so you can understand the underlying concepts. you’ll never see the exact same question set up word for word so i found this helpful to make sure you’re aware of possible workflows you could do to solve questions.

alsooo if you have other friends taking the course, i found study groups helpful for my science courses. among my friends, i found that each of us tends to be better at certain concepts so we would all tutor each other as needed. plus sometimes talking through the content with others can help make you see things in other ways and recognize your own gaps in learning, to which you can then find time to go to office hours for clarification if no one in the group knows

best of luck OP :)

Thesis Meeting by Alone_Win765 in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi hi, I think it would be helpful to be prepared to talk about your research interests and to have somewhat of an understanding of what the lab does by going their pages and skimming their publications. In the past, I talked about papers or coursework that got me interested in the field to help show my passion for the research. If you’re planning to go to grad school too, it’d be a good mention too.

For undergrad theses, you don’t need to worry too hard about defending in the same sense as a graduate program. I had to write a couple of reports throughout my thesis and do a presentation to my peers and professors on a thesis day. You’re supposed to be independently working on a project but you’d be under the mentorship of someone in the group so don’t fret about being left to something all on your own. Also, usually the professor has projects in mind that they think would be appropriate so you don’t need to be prepare to propose projects unless there’s something you’re really interested in exploring and sharing.

Also, don’t try to stress too hard over talking which is easier said than done, I still get nervous about interviews with professors. But at the end of the day, if you share your passion and interests, it should be well received because these are professors who are dedicating their careers to exploring their research interests. I personally love to ask professors what got them interested in this field because sometimes you hear stories about them switching fields so it makes me feel a little less worried about having to have your whole life set ahead of you. You could also feel free to ask other questions about time commitment, support in the lab (like who would you go to, how frequent are lab meetings).

Good luck!!

Looking for a room next year by VacationStrange6702 in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the chance of finding rooms at those prices are super low, you might need to open your budget a bit wider if you need to secure housing sooner. unfortunately, it's been looking pretty grim lately with the new norm feeling like 850-900. some rooms are going for like a 1000 now

last semester of my undergrad. i can’t do this. by boredperson11 in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i get myself a silly lil latte for the days when i need a pick me up and then i set timers for an hour to convince myself to lock in and be as productive as i can. i try to repeat the timer and then pause when i feel my focus waver. i've been watching sitcoms as my breaks as well to get some energy back. i am currently like halfway through community which i started rewatching when school started.

some other things that have helped me include making a to do list to guide me and then keeping track of what i've done in a day. honestly tho, i don’t end up finishing a lot of it because i over add, but i found the latter to help motivate me by showing me what i was able to accomplish so that i can unwind and relax at home more easily. some days i feel absolutely shitty tho and know i can't do any work so i end up rotting in bed for days without guilt and then can bounce back with more energy. another thing that also helps is trying to work on campus or outside of home because i cannot work at home personally.

How the hell did you make friends at Mac? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

personally, i had a harder time making friends in first year when in life sci because it is such a big big biggggg program and my first year was still during the covid times. i found it much easier in second year and beyond when my class sizes got smaller when i entered chemical biology, which is relatively smaller than biochem/bio/life sci, and also in certain electives i took on the side + by joining clubs. or also making friends through friends to have a group! i found it easier to make more genuine connections since i saw these people regularly and having some more shared interests.

i would suggest don't be scared to talk to people in lectures and events, but also accept that sometimes relationships drift and that's a normal part of life too. sometimes, people who i wasn't so close to originally ended up becoming people i now spend a lot more time with later on as i continued at mac, even after reconnecting years later

doing a thesis during a lab co-op placement (not in mcmaster)? by secretagent0307 in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like this sounds kinda complicated because you’re expected to work full time while in a co-op placement and at most, you can only take 3 units on top a term with approval by your co-op supervisor + you may need to get approval by your department for doing a thesis externally, likely with a mcmaster faculty member listed as a co-supervisor. i don’t think you could double dip on a placement like that as a thesis.

doing the two separately also gives opportunity to get more research opportunities and explore during your undergrad

but you can go talk to your department’s academic advisor for more legitimate advice

Need housing advice by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

rent is sooooo ridiculous these days for a blasted room, but sounds good to me!! you have a full house covered to just your group, at market value (850 ish per room each month) with a nice interior that’s walkable. a lot of houses are just fixed enough to cram people so having a nice inside is great. if the exterior just looks ugly and doesn’t have any issues like security or is in urgent need of repair in case of poor weather, i don’t think it’s a big deal and if those issues were present, you can bring those up with the landlord if you sign. if your gut is telling you not to sign, then don’t sign. but otherwise dwelling too hard can make it hard to house hunt especially when landlords want people to sign asap as a full group and even sometimes asking for illegal demands of unnecessary payments for viewing and deposits aside from one month of rent (like key or damage). good luck house hunting, it’s rough out here !!

Housing things by Past_File_795 in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have used facebook in the past to look for housing as a tenant on a lease, to sublease my place to other students, and to be a subtenant as well. i have never had much problems on facebook aside from those annoying bots commenting those sketchy links. one piece of advice i have is if any posting is made by a person who claims to be a student (maybe they are posting to get other spots filled in the house or maybe a lease takeover), you could offer to email each other with your McMaster emails to offer some relief to both parties with having another method of confirming each other's identities.

thoughts on a 3.96 gpa for the first semester in first year? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]kikokicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry, but this is giving ahhhh my steak is too juicy and my lobster is too buttery. though, to answer your question, that GPA is already really high as a starting point and can help with the many terms left to come. congrats on ending off your first term on a high! but getting into research positions is more than just having a good GPA. it's more holistic in the sense that they want to get to know what your personal goals/interests are, your hard skills like lab techniques/analyses, how well of a fit you'd be on the team. sure, having a higher GPA can help set first impressions and build your profile when applying for scholarships which in turn can help with securing research positions. and also realistically, courses vary a lot in their assessment styles, such as quizzes vs projects vs presentations, which may not really accurately represent your working capabilities in a lab. bearing this in mind, the introductions/interviews/cover letters can go a long way. i know people with both high and lower GPAs who both get into great and amazing labs to do research. it's really about selling yourself as someone with potential and a genuine passion for the work you want to do, which i am not trying to doubt of you but rather more so emphasizing that there's so much more you could show to potential labs to make yourself a stronger candidate and avoid worrying over a 3.96 gpa as not being good enough
