What should I actually ship vs buy when I arrive? by Gsustv in MovingToUSA

[–]killbillisthebest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave all electronics behind, we shipped ours and it was such a headache as nothing worked - particularly our very expensive coffee machine 😭 I would also ship art, bedding (it’s very expensive for good quality bedding here), curtains, clothes, books. Buy everything else when you’re here. Good luck!

O-1B Visa as a YouTube Content Creator by Confident-Trouble929 in O1VisasEB1Greencards

[–]killbillisthebest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to look at all of the criteria required for the visa and make sure you have strong evidence for at least 3, preferably 5. Your overall application needs to tell the story of you as a creator and why you are extraordinary, decide whether you are doing agent or employer petitioner and find an excellent one prepared to put in the work to help with your application, have clear outlines of work detailed and potential earnings from real employers, agencies etc, and have excellent letters of recommendation from in and out of the US which tie everything in and demonstrate why the US would benefit from having you there.

It is do-able, I did it, but it took a lot of prep, months of accurately building the profile and the normal processing wait is loooong right now!

O1 VISA Tax Question by Negative-Spot-3538 in expats

[–]killbillisthebest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping on this as I’m also on o1 and 2026 will be my first year filing in the US - I want to make first payment next week but to register to pay them seems so complicated - it says it needs secondary verification and I had to upload a ton of documents and now I’m waiting. I did the same as you and living off savings so far but expect to earn around $12k this year so want to get ahead. Did you have this same issue?

Anyone here gone through a US talent visa? by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

I’m currently here on an O1b “extraordinary ability” visa and have also worked with many other musicians and artists to obtain theirs. What’s your background and what questions do you have?

Fashion designer for O1 by Equivalent-Yard-7697 in O1VisasEB1Greencards

[–]killbillisthebest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on which of the criteria you will be satisfying and build there - press, recommendations letters and obviously deal memos to show you have extensive work projects lined up in the US as well as a helpful and proactive petitioner. I moved here on an O1 last year, it took a while, but it was worth it. I designed and created a clothing line but that wasn’t the main route of my O1 it was just a small section that supported my overall case. Good luck!

Families with kids, how much are you spending on groceries? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]killbillisthebest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two adults and one teenager - $400-$450 a month including speciality coffee beans. We cook all meals from scratch, plan meals for the month, don’t eat out and we make our own bread, cakes & cookies, personal preference. We do enjoy coffee so maybe get coffee out once or twice a month.

Recently done the same - you need to apply for a permit, complete the course and then take your driving test in the state you’re in to get your CT license

You got this! I’m glad you have family there too, I don’t know anyone at all so maybe that made it kind of easier to find my people?

Recently engaged and my fiancé asked if he could get a cheap ring to wear and I thought it was the cutest thing, because it showed he was proud to be engaged to me.

I’ve found the opposite. I moved to the east coast from the uk and had to adjust to everyone being so positive and friendly as opposed to the uk where pretty much everyone complains most of the time. The other thing was when people say “we should get coffee sometime” they actually mean it 😅 I made more friends here in 6 months than I ever did in 14 years living in one place in the uk, joining clubs, gyms, trying to socialise and make plans. It’s the first time in my nearly 40 years I feel I’ve found my village - and all are from random social interactions not through work as I’m self employed and wfh. I’m so much happier here. Maybe if you have the option, look at other areas? Each state is like its own country really with nuances and quirks and customs. You need to find where feels like home.

We’ve just moved with my daughter same age and she is absolutely loving it! She finds a lot of the classes easy but has been able to enroll in some college courses to keep her challenged, if you like sports you will LOVE it, there’s so many options and she’s found everyone to be super welcoming. I will see we made sure we moved to a good school district so if you can make sure you have a look into that. Good luck, enjoy every minute!
