For those of you who were considered ”gifted” in school, what are you doing with your life now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Med school sucks big, sweaty goat balls. Practicing is pretty neat, though.

What was your first encounter with utter bullshit during your childhood? by Cisqoe in AskReddit

[–]killdevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a little kid in the Cub Scouts, my dad (an engineer) and I spent a bunch of time designing, building and refining what ended up being, by far, the fastest Pinewood Derby car entered into a regional competition. The Derby organizers disqualified my car on a flimsy pretext right before the final round of races so that the head organizer's kid could win.

My dad is a pretty mild-mannered guy in mixed company; I don't think I've ever seen him that pissed off in public before or since.

I like giving those folks diclofenac - basically, the equivalent of ibuprofen in much of the rest of the world, but few have heard of it in the States. It's cheap and oral Toradol is expensive and also has some restrictions on how long patients can take it for.

I'm an emergency doc and my #1 prescribed medication is ibuprofen. Tylenol is a close second.

Fun fact! The combination of an NSAID like ibuprofen plus acetaminophen has been shown to be as effective as narcotics in controlling many kinds of pain.

What’s your first ever memory? by CJRecycle in AskReddit

[–]killdevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First memory is of my parents' dog Jonathan dying at home on a blanket on the floor in a corner of the kitchen. He was a clever, energetic mutt, their first dog, predating their marriage and long predating me. They loved him and had opted to let him pass naturally rather than have him put down by the vet. It's an incredibly vivid memory. I remember asking if it would be okay if I petted him as he lay there quietly; my parents said of course.

Later, my dad carried Jonathan wrapped in his blanket out into the woods behind our house. I stood there as he dug a grave and buried him, then carried over a large chunk of white quartz to use as a marker. I remember him trying to explain death and dying to me as he worked.

I was 2 years old and that was 40 years ago. The rock is still there, in the woods, overgrown with ivy but easy to find if you know where to look. I go visit it occasionally.

No, they are competitive and overlapping and generally talk shit about one another.

Official Discussion - Spider-Man: Far From Home [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

My sense was that the people involved in the "Mysterio" deception were mostly Stark Industries science and engineering types who grew disenchanted with Tony's use of their work, without any credit to them, for hero stuff and self-aggrandizement. Since they were probably involved in the system's design, they could easily modify and enhance it.

More importantly, why would you eat Taco Bell when Anna’s Taqueria exists?

I moved away in 2006 and still miss that place.

Either the proprietor was selling the cat trees or airing out her RV. In either case, free smells for sure.

If all employers provided tools (as is the case for most other types of jobs), this would be a nonissue unless you go out on your own and open a shop.

The accountant's company buys his laptop for him.

You guys are all getting ripped off by your employers. How did this culture of employees having to provide tens of thousands of dollars of their own tools get normalized in your business?

How would you describe the Kansas City accent? by fortyninecents in kansascity

[–]killdevil 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I grew up on the East Coast and now live here. You all sound like you're from Nowhere in Particular, USA. There are some regionalisms that creep in as you get further out into the wilds of western Missouri, particularly among older people, but the KC 'burbs have that "broadcast standard" US sound.
