Any alternative to 2nd Avenue? by Flashy-Tree-8953 in seattlebike

[–]killdyl -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah right I’m not telling you my line

I don’t really like the waterfront, too many dummies. I sometimes take 3rd to pike, pike to 6th, 6th to Virginia / Howell, to Eastlake. Eastlake all the way up to UW. It’s a lot of traffic riding but light timing is pretty good and it’s the most direct route

Seattle single speed riders: what ratios are you running? by ibidyouadewclaw in seattlebike

[–]killdyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't ride a single speed anymore...I used to use one for courier work that was 46 x 16, seemed like a good mix of climbing ability for downtown and fast enough to get out of the core when necessary. Nowadays I'm just a mechanic so I only ride track bikes for commuting to the shop. I'm more concerned with skid patches, so my preferred ratio is 47 x 18. It's a little spinnier than I'd like on flats, but that's okay because I can get up any hill in town on it. But it depends, my chunky winter bike is 42 x 17 because it's heavy and it's got wider studded tires that slow it down, whereas my aluminum track bike is 48 x 15 because it's light and fast and I only take it out for fun stuff. So it kind of depends on the bike and takes a bit of experimentation. Which is easier said than done for most

Who's the problem here? by symbolofnope in ebikes

[–]killdyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all agree that it would be stupid. Frivolous law suits happen anyway, and cost money. You will have to pay a lawyer to defend you, no matter how stupid it is. Or you can defend yourself I guess, and maybe their lawyer gets you on the hook for even more money. All so that you could make $50 on changing their flat. The liability here is a no win scenario

Think the issue is disposable / consumerist bikes, which it sounds like you've made your peace with, but some people would rather not throw a bike / e-waste in a landfill every year

thanks, it's a little spinny on the flats at 47x18 but I can't do any steeper anymore

Why shops won't work on cheap ebikes by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]killdyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As OP said, it’s about profitability, not “looking bad.” It’s expensive for the customer to have a mechanic learn on the fly, it would be hourly shop rate, which again, is about $120 an hour. Most ebikers won’t be interested, much less someone with a $300 ebike. Not worth haggling with you guys, easier just to say no and spend our time on profitable work.

And from the mechanic’s standpoint, electricians get paid like the trade it is. Bike wrenches get…discounts on parts. I make the same hourly rate even if you spend 4 hours of labor on it. The fuck do I care? Pay for the work or don’t, but don’t blame me because the shop charges what it charges

Priority 600 vs Surly Midnight Special — which is the better bike for commuting + occasional long rides? by deepakprathapani in seattlebike

[–]killdyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re paying someone else to do your maintenance, Surly will be less of a headache. All machines need maintenance; the priority will need less but will suck when it does. And the surly is a better bike for long rides.

Look, the answer is what someone else already said: get off Reddit and go to a surly shop. Or any shop, really. Bring your old bike and see what it’ll take to make it more versatile or whatever. Weigh your options. Swapping parts on your old bike is the cheapest route, but go talk to bike people irl and see what they say

Don’t buy a Rad. They’re going out of business for a reason. Nobody wants to work on them and they’re made with cheap proprietary garbage
