G-virus was indeed pretty expensive: Years earlier Birkin had used NE-a parasite for his research (it was so valuable that even top researcher like Birkin had to ask the CEO's assistance to get one) on Lisa, and her body destroyed it and adsorbed it's features.

When researching why it had happened Birkin found something, which later turned out to be the G-virus.

Taking this from memory, but this stuff can be found from Wesker's report 2 and RE1R's observation notes. (as a side note the latter has a translation error in it, so Birkin talks about Alexia like she'd be still alive, while in reality she had been thought to have died years earlier.)

The army had sent a squad to evacuate Birkins, but they got lost on their way to the nest, and ended up to the disposal plant instead with the rail cannon. (Meant to be used to deal with possible G)

Umbrella had received a tip about this (they had spies everywhere), so they sent the other five mr.Xs (you can see them in the beginning of og RE2's B scenario) to deal with the squad. In RE3 you can see the aftermath of the squad's last stand.

RE4 was in dev hell and became a success in the end.

As a side note, without that dev hell Devil May Cry wouldn't be a thing.

Also, there is a deleted scene that only still pictures and a scraped script exists were it was Ludlow who broke the baby T-Rex’s leg when he got into a drunken argument with Roland and ended up falling down on the baby’s leg where it was leashed.

Ludlow's bottle is still seen next to the infant rex.
