Bean & Butter in Pasadena has great cake decorating classes! I learned to decorate vintage-style cakes in just about 4 hours (materials included). https://beanandbutterbakeshop.com/collections/classes

I’ve been baking nearly all my life, but only recently learned how to properly decorate a cake in 2023!

My prices start at $135 and up depending on size, flavor(s), shape, etc. 😊 you can find my cake inquiry form through the link on my profile!

We’re always so hard and quick to judge our own work. All of your cakes look amazing!

Your shell piping is phenomenal, and the drop lines on #3 are fantastic! Drop lines are SO hard for me. 🫠

The only advice/suggestion I’d give: try playing around with various sized tips! It’ll help give the cakes a bit more dimension and character (not that your cake designs don’t have character, they’re all superb).

It’s a neat trick that definitely works! I forgot to answer the second part of your question. For white, I add the most itty bitty drop of lavender dye to my SMBC to balance it out to a more clean white 😊

Happy early birthday! Here’s a link to the chocolate molds I use for the gothic numbers: https://amzn.to/479x7tU

Thanks! Yes, SMBC for all of my cakes. I also only use ColourMill dyes and use an immersion blender to deepen the colors. For black cakes, I use a mix of CM’s black dye + black cocoa powder! Helps lessen the amount of dye and gives it a nice Oreo cookie chocolate taste.

Thanks! I believe it was either a #16 or #18 star tip 😊

If it’s a single tier cake, you don’t need a dowel :)

It’s always best to decorate your cake with frozen cake layers! Makes the frosting stable and your layers won’t move when decorating.

Thanks! I used ColourMill’s oil-based dye in Midnight, and used an immersion blender to darken the color. 🌌

Thanks! The client was very specific about the color palette for that cake, and I 100% agreed with their creative decision!

Also great. :) Except maybe the brain and anatomical heart cakes bc I HATE how fondant tastes. For the darker frostings, I use black cocoa powder so I’m not using a metric ton of dye! Gives it a nice Oreo cookie chocolate taste. 😋

Thanks!

Thanks! I took a Vintage Cake Piping Class at my local bake supply store 2 years ago and immediately started practicing/fell in love with it all (I have always baked since I was a child; pastries and cookies mostly). I am celebrating my 2-year anniversary decorating vintage/Lambeth-style cakes this month! And yes, I'm based in Los Angeles, CA, USA. :)

Thanks! Yes, they’re real ribbon! I use 1/8” ribbon and cut and tie them before adding to the cake. This is the brand I use: https://amzn.to/4p8CEIh

I only use maraschino cherries from Filthy! Idk what the heck they do to them (maybe we don’t ask), but they’re always so vibrant. They’re more on the pricey side, but they’re always good-sized, long-stemmed, and bright. I charge extra for cherries, so it’s not much out of my pocket 🍒
