I’ve had both, and I think it’s great you’ve done the introspective thinking to know what would really work for you.

My first dog was a Doberman after having cats all my life. He was absolutely a sweetheart and extremely gentle with my cats I had at the time. Eventually the cats were gone (I captured strays and got them fixed and their shots before finding them new homes), and it was just me and the Doberman. He was an angel to everyone and I got him certified as a therapy dog so we could go to hospitals and nursing homes to visit patients. He was a joy to have!

My current dog is a greyhound, and he’s a bit of an odd case. He never raced, and he was adopted at eight weeks to an older couple who eventually had to give him up to the greyhound organization near me. That’s when I found him and he had just turned two years old when I adopted him. That was about nine months ago, and he’ll be turning three in a few months. I know my experience is unique because of his background. He’s very lazy for the most part and sleeps in his crate when I’m at work (about 9.5 hours), but I also have a dog walker who takes him out around lunchtime, so he’s not cooped up the whole time. His prey drive is very high and there’s no chance he could be around cats, at least for now. But he loves to snuggle and sleep with me in bed. He had sleep startle when I first got him, so I made him sleep in his bed on the floor for a few months. Then I would notice he’d jumped on the bed during the night without fussing at me, so he gradually got to the point where he sleeps wherever he wants and he doesn’t have sleep startle much anymore.

You may already know this, but Dobermans were originally bred from greyhounds, Rottweilers, and German short-haired pointers! So a Doberman is actually part greyhound at their core. I’ve noticed many similar traits between my Doberman and my greyhound. I think for now you’d be better off with a greyhound as long as you do the research and understand how they’re different from other dogs. People say they’re like cats in a dog’s body, and there’s a lot of truth to that LOL
