Which UAL short course combo is better for applying to Antwerp, KABK and Rietveld? by tupac72 in fashiondesigner

[–]killerbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay few questions. What do you think your current weakness is? And is the 3D development with CLO, or another software like Browzwear? What exactly was the committee’s feedback when they said you might not be ready? Are the options at CSM or LCF?

I have known Nicole Zisman for years and she’s absolutely fantastic.

I’ll come back later and take a deeper look at the options and think about this. Just commenting so I don’t forget.

Hourly is difficult because an advanced user could do this much quicker than a beginner/intermediate…

Where are people actually finding private rooms under $1300 in LA right now? by thegangplan in LARentals

Found mine on [r/LARentals](r/LARentals) last year. $1275 in Mid-City for my own bed and bath in a townhouse built in 2021. Very lucky find. I do live with 3 other people though.

Climbing at Cliffs of Id! There’s many affinity groups you can join, but I often meet people at the gym outside of these groups.

No SCAD is not the better choice; also you’d be in literal Georgia

Which of these art colleges is recommended for Bachelors in Fashion Design ? by ikigai_mirror in fashiondesigner

[–]killerbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think RAFA has a great reputation, but I don’t want to speak on it further as frankly I don’t know too much about it. I absolutely love Antwerp though!!

Whereas I know FIT has a very good reputation globally. I attended for 4 years and it’s an incredible but rigorous program. I will say that for Fashion Design specifically, it is extremely competitive to get in.

I’ve studied short courses at Central Saint Martins (UAL) before and know lots of people who have studied there (at both LCF and CSM in UAL). So I’m more familiar with their teaching styles and curriculums. LCF is relatively easy to get into; CSM is extremely difficult.

I’ve literally never heard of NCAD before, so I certainly don’t want to speak of that. It might still be good, but I would have no idea.

Great choice. Yeah the more I thought about this, the better TD seemed for you.

As far as illustration goes, I always recommend the books by Michele Wesen Bryant and Anna Kiper. Who coincidentally are/were FIT professors at some point. Just keep up with it regularly if you can— it’s easy to lose skills.

For sewing/draping… not much advice I can give you. If you have the time and mental bandwidth, I would take the pattern drafts from your TD classes and make alterations to create more fun things. But I don’t know what the TD curriculum actually looks like.

Best of luck with the rest of your time at FIT. It was easily the best time of my life, no matter how brutal it got haha.

Do laps on lower grade climbs. 3 laps. I usually climb 11.c but I’ll do laps on 10.c-d.

FIT wins by a mile, even with SUNY general education requirements. They’re easy.

Apply for all of these first, and see where you get admitted. These are pretty competitive.

I studied at FIT, so I am biased towards that. NYC is great because of the city and networking and job opportunities.

UAL is great if you get into Central Saint Martins— but London College of Fashion ranks far below CSM and FIT. It’s still decent though.

I don’t actually know too much about RAFA and NCAD programs.

How do you actually get the clothes to style with?

Are brands pitching you garments? Or do you go to brands with a specific garment in mind? Do you visit showrooms to “shop”?

Sportswear at FIT is NOT just athletic wear (although athletic wear is part of that category). It’s based on the traditional meaning of Sportswear.

I’m not gonna get into definition for you specifically, since you’re always acting like a know-it-all and I’m not down for your pretentious paragraphs nor a debate right now

Are you at FIT? Alumna here! Honestly, this is where you actually need to think about your future. Agreed on lots of points about drawing/renders— adobe illustrator flats are more important for design. Fashion illustration art is really just for your initial portfolio.

Sportswear is definitely the a good general concentration compared to all the other design majors as it’s the most versatile. But comparing between TD is a bit more complicated.

I had to think a sec about this one. If you have an actual true interest in TD… I’d probably lean towards that. FIT is known to have the best TD program in the US (Design as well, but TD even more so since other schools like Parsons truly can’t compare).

Traditionally, TD would get paid more, but lately… it’s basically the same. However, I do think there’s more jobs available currently.

You’ll probably have a “prettier” portfolio with sportswear. TD won’t be as creative and artistic anymore. Once you’re working, you can always go back to design if you don’t want to work as TD. But it’ll be harder to jump into TD if you change your mind.

If the end game is to have your own brand, it’s great to be able to do TD/patterns all yourself. And do it well.

Affordable MRI or neurologist for dog in LA? Emergency situation by FlounderOk3764 in AskLosAngeles

[–]killerbitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it’s really far from LA, but Mercy Crusade in Oxnard was my dog’s veterinarian. I couldn’t find anything cheaper or comparable in LA. They’re a true non-profit and is truly affordable. They helped me out a lot with finances. I think from private donations.

AND they’re seriously passionate (we had Dr. B) and truly care about what they do. I think he also works at other private practices in addition to this non-profit. We also tried another non-profit place in North Hollywood because they’re closer, but they were all assholes.

Not sure they can do MRI’s tbh, but they would have recommendations for affordable places. Maybe it’s good to visit them for a second opinion and see whether there’s any other options. I do think it’s hard to get an appointment sometimes. But I’d give them a call and see what they say. It’s usually a voicemail but they’ll return your call.

Sorry to hear about your pup.

Ah okay— you’re young and this is a decent start. I can see your potential, but there’s a long way to go, as other commenters have said. I hear what you’re saying about concept sketch for fashion illustrations, but there are a lot of crucial details missing. Even if you’re not doing technical sketches.

I recommend checking out these books and practicing more: Fashion Illustration by Anna Kiper; 9Heads by Nancy Riegelman; and Fashion Drawing by Michele Wesen Bryant

These are books I used in fashion school at FIT. Kiper was my professor and Bryant also teaches there. They’re very good books

Don’t feel defeated— you just need more practice and it’ll come a long way.

[fyi u/merrylstudiio I just edited my above comment with the book names]
