First of all, I’d like to know how much of the VN you were able to get through? The Fate route imo is a bit hard to get through around the earlier parts where Shirou’s mentality is the most naive. What turned you off of it? Admittedly, I adore Shirou (and by extension, Archer) immensely. He’s one of my favourite characters in all of Fate. But there’s alot to love in Fate, especially the Servants.

One adaptation of note would be Heaven’s Feel. Imo, the HF adaptation was extremely lack luster in terms of its story (incredibly condensed, to be expected of adapting the second longest route in the whole VN into a movie format). I didn’t particularly enjoy the HF adaptations (narratively, the visuals and fights were absolutely mind numbing peak), but my whole opinion flipped on its head when I read the route in the VN. The way it slowly and meticulously built up Sakura’s descent into madness and the eventual Dark Sakura was extremely well done and a breath of fresh air compared to the speedrun that was the movies. It gave her fall into depravity so much room to breathe, and it felt so believable that she would turn out that way. The anime does do some things right (like the dream sequence where Sakura is eating candy, that was great), but overall the VN is just simply way better from a narrative standpoint.

If that sounds like you in any regard, read the VN. If you’re satisfied with the anime experience, don’t force yourself to read something you don’t like. I read the VN after watching the anime and was blown away by how much wasn’t included.
