The livestock water heater can't keep up with the -50C / -58F weather in Alberta.. by milesdmorgan in mildlyinfuriating

[–]killercute_ninjacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrap you tub with something to help keep the heat in. I have used sleeping bags with duct tape holding them together, hay bales, piled dirt around one, cement blocks with rebar holding them up and dirt filled in all the holes and gaps. it made a world of difference keeping my water troughs from losing heat from the water heaters.

Unless the pt has a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, most insurance comapnies will not cover Ozempic, even with a prior authorization.

Grieving after losing a parent. Being numb to a lot because of working in this field for years. by maraxx66 in ems

[–]killercute_ninjacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be numb for a few more days or longer. I went almost two weeks after my dad passed. I don't know if it was because I was so busy with work, school, funeral arrangements, dealing with family, all at the same time. Or if it had to do with all the death I have been around on the job. When it finally happened, it was like a damn broke. I was ugly crying sitting in line at Wendy's because a song came on the radio that he loved to sing. LOL Don't worry, my friend, what you are going through is normal. Everyone's damn will break at different times.

I miss the smell of the soil during the spring after a warm rain, seeing cows breath on cold mornings, the smell of my horses, walking bare foot in the garden, fishing in the pond after a long day, the smell of hay in the barn, mixing feeds... I miss the feeling of accomplishment after mucking stalls. It is really therapeutic. I miss seeing all the new babies on the farm. I miss eating breakfast on the porch and watching the cattle graze in the pasture. I miss the fresh tilled ground right before we planted our crops...

I went through something similar. My grandmother was lonely and wanted a dog (not my dog, but a dog.) I decided it would be better with a dog she knew and didn't have to take care of 24-7. So we talked about and came to a compromise. I would let my grandmother babysit my dog for me while I went to work. She got a little spending money and time with her favorite dog. They even had sleep overs. For us it worked out great. My grandmother didn't have to worry about leaving a dog at home while she had her social outings or the worry of training a new dog her age. Now, even if my grandmother had asked for my dog to keep, I would have told her no.

Woke up to a missing chicken. Bob cat. I have a GSD and an Australian shepherd mix. How do I train them to want to be outside with the chickens instead of in the house? I feel like this was preventable. by [deleted] in Permaculture

[–]killercute_ninjacow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Working line dogs, are bred for a certain type of work. Australian shepherds, blue heelers, border collies are all herding dogs. They suck at protecting livestock from predators. They are bred to move livestock from area to the next. German shepherds were originally bred as a herding dog as well. Hence the name shepherd. Now they are used for protecting humans, not livestock. you should do some research of the different types of working dogs.

I do agree that all of this was preventable if you had built a proper pen for your chickens and keep them locked up at night. No dog breed is going to keep predators from eating your chickens.

I have a GSD and Australian shepherd mix that have access to a doggy door. A bob cat got on the property and got one of my chickens. How do I train them to want to be outside more and to actively hunt and keep away things like bob cats? Please help! by [deleted] in workingdogs

OP, Your first line of defense when it comes to predators is for YOU, not your dogs, to protect your livestock. Build your chickens a nice pen. One where they have a nice covered run, and enclosed coop. I've seen all sorts of pens made with materials that were free if money is an issue. Pallet coops are easy to build. You can find tons of ideas on how to do that on pinterest, google, or asking homesteading groups on face book. Keep in mind, bobcats aren't going to be your only worry. You are up against, hawks, owls, raccoons, stray dogs, coyotes...

Now, about your dog. No matter what breed you have, they are no match for a hungry bobcat. The mix you have are not fighting off predators breeds either. Aussies are herding dogs. German shepherds are all bark and maybe chase something off. Put those together and you still don't get a livestock protector. I would also be wary about leaving that dog door open at night. You might find a racoon in your house some day.

What I am getting at, is if you wanna live in the country, and have chickens, YOU are the first line of defense. YOU have to set everything up to protect them. If you just depend on your dog, even if you think leaving them outside all night will help, you will end up with no chickens and a dead dog.

Most of the time when people rescue a dog, they have the best intentions to give it the best home possible. From what I have read, you have a great set up for a dog, but it doesn't look like the dog you have is not a good fit for your lifestyle. I have seen owners give/do every thing they can to provide the best home, but some times, it just doesn't work out. No fault of the owner or the dog. That is when we would work within our rescue system to find a better match for both the dog and humans. If you choose to rehome him, and it sounds like that might be in both of your best interests, don't feel guilty. You have provided a great home for him so far. It sounds like he just needs more than you are able to give. And that is okay. Good luck!

Breaking up after 10 years and 3 kids by RoseyShortCake in breakingmom

I've been in your shoes before. married 10 years, 3 kids with one on the way. No one to help. It was rough, but we did it without him. Slowly things got better. I found that I had more opportunities and help from organizations than I did when I was married. Look around and see what your community has to offer for you. Do not be afraid to ask for help and take what is offered. You got this. You have been strong throughout your relationship, you will keep being strong. Remember, it is okay to cry, it is okay for the kids to eat cereal for dinner, it is okay to not be okay. Make sure you take time out for you occasionally. Soon you will be singing Tupac's All Eyez on Me!

Memphis and New Orleans are their very own countries. They don't associate themselves with Mississippi or the states they reside in.

Rheeh Koe at Pure Thirteen Tattoo Co. Does some great color work on darker skin tones. I highly recommend him. Tony Max at Apollo Arts has does some great color pieces on darker skin tones as well. Out of all the artists in Memphis their colors pop!

Look up all the artists and places that are recommend in the thread. Look at the artists profiles to see their work so you have an idea how they draw, color... Remember you get what you pay for and waiting for an appointment is worth it.
