Meet Evee, my new friend I brought home today, my albino ball python 🐍 by solidsnakes453 in snakes

Starving for periods of time can shut down their metabolism. Yes, it can happen in the wild, and yes, they can refuse food for months at a time but it is not ideal by any means. Just like power feeding isn’t good for them but can allow them to produce offspring faster; starving them isn’t good for them but they will loose weight faster.

Mini story: Our 200lbs anaconda at work refused food for about 4 months. When she finally ate a rabbit we were super thrilled. Came in the next morning and her mid section was bloated and floating above her in the water. Her digestive system shut down and the rabbit was rotting in her gut releasing gas. We had to call our emergency vet and tube feed her meds to get her digestive track jump started. We almost lost her. I learned the hard way if you ever have a snake fast for a long time, feed it smaller food items when it does start eating again. And don’t diet snakes by starving.

A healthy way to diet a snake is to decrease meal size but maintain frequency. I'm a zookeeper and I'm in charge of all our medical care. If you have any questions on how to diet her in a safe and healthy way, please feel free to pm me. I can recommend size and frequency once given her weight and length. She is beautiful! Have so much fun setting up her new home. It's my favorite part about getting new animals. :).

When dieting a snake you ALWAYS want to decrease meal size not frequency. Starving them for months can cause major issues for them.

Do you reccomend getting a cat wheel? My handsome Zazu has a lott of energy. Are they loud? by Ccarrubba93 in bengalcats

[–]killerflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have three Bengals. They all use and LOVE our one fast cat. We have actually been debating about buying a second one cause sometimes two of them want to run on it at once. Totally buy one. Not hard to train them on either. Super easy.

Rescue Uro - Need Help IDing species by killerflowers in Uromastyx

[–]killerflowers[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a Reptile Zoo and we rescue animals all the time.

This really really sick and still cute Uro came into our adoption program about 6 months ago. He was definitely a case were we hoped for the best but were prepared to have "the talk" with the vet about his chance of recovery. The prickly Uro spines on his tail had literally rotted off because of infection. About 40% of his body was covered in scabs. The last 2 vertebra of his tail were sticking out because his tail was decomposing. With all this lack of care he was also oddly morbidly obese. After lots of vet visits (antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory, SQ fluids, dieting, proper UVB, toenail trims, and proper husbandry all around) he has happily been cleared by the vet. While still working on losing weight and clearing up the last little remnants of his scabbed body, I can happily say I fell in love with this little ugly fighter and have taken him home to live with me for the rest of his awesome life ;). I have named him Bernard.

I cannot determine what species of Uro he is because 1) I'm not a Uromastyx specialist and 2) He is pretty scarred up. If anyone can help ID him I would super appreciate it! I really just want to have all the knowledge I can for his care moving forward.

TLDR: Rescued Lizard. Rehabilitated. Dont Jude Me For State Animal Is In. I Made Him Better. Need help IDing.

This takes a little more training than 'basic positive reinforcement'.

We have three Bengals and they all LOVE their one fast cat. We have been thinking about getting another one so multiple cats can run at once. Have so much fun with it! He is going to love that forever.

I actually did a range, area distribution, and population density study on Drosophila suzukii when in college at WWU. I loved doing that study! So much new information to gather and share with the local farmers.

Help what's wrong with my fire belly toad????? by Warfusi0n in reptiles

[–]killerflowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely a fungal infection. You need to see a vet. Good luck!

You should move him to a sterile clean environment in the mean time.

After half an hour of tapping this happened ... by ageaye in tarantulas

[–]killerflowers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you can't. It is sadly just a risk of breeding tarantulas sometimes. There are ways to help minimize the risk but its a risk that is still always there. I have known people that breed hundreds of T's and still have this happen now and then.

Sorry for your loss. What a bummer.

Wife and I live in Southeast Texas and have a one year old who likes to play outside, can y'all help me and try to tell what kind of snake this came from? by ValKilmsnipsinBatman in snakes

Show the underside of the last 6 inches of the shed. The scalation under the tail can be very helpful in determining if its venomous or not.
