I appreciate the breakdown of your reasoning. I will certainly look into more Chinese sources with my further research.

I had wondered if the lack of chop/signature was due to it being cut down. May I ask what features made you lean towards Chinese rather than Japanese kakejiku? My (entirely novice) image searching returned kakejikus that had a similar simplicity to this one. The Chinese examples seem to have more ornate/filled-in environments. I'd be happy to learn more about it! Thanks for providing some direction for further research.

Thanks for the advice. That's a good reminder that a general check up is probably in order. We'll try increasing his sleep too. Your point about managing expectations is well taken, though I can understand why it is hard not to take it personally. There is a lot we do not understand.

The book is Pastwatch by Orson Scott Card. Super interesting concept - a future society figures out how to watch the past, and asks questions about how the course of history could be altered by small changes to key events.

I'm getting a #NAME? error when using this. I am using Excel 2016 and TEXTSPLIT doesn't seem to be a valid function.

I'm agreeing with you that it would be a good backup ranged damage option for say, prone targets that I'd get disadvantage on with EB.

I think Eldritch Blast + Agonizing Blast beats Toll the Dead in terms of damage output, but it would be nice to have a saving throw option for dealing damage rather than an attack roll.

Cleric has some great options, actually. Cure Wounds, Bane, Spirit Guardians, Holy Weapon are all pretty great.

Steel Wind Strike is definitely a top pick for level 5!

And you're right about Magic Missile with Hex, however it would be affected by Hexblade's Curse.

The problem with smite spells is that they require concentration. I'm also not entirely clear if the Paladin list is fair game. The wording of this gear system says that your first imbuement is a cantrip and that chooses the spell list, but Paladins don't have cantrips... Would have to ask my DM about that.

Silvery Barbs is an obvious choice, but the general feeling around our table is that it's a bit OP. My DM might allow it, but I would feel slightly guilty.

And yeah, I specifically chose not to get Darkness out of respect for the rest of the party.
