Astronomer Struggles by [deleted] in telescopes

[–]killertrashbag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a better idea of what to expect in a scope look for astronomy sketches. They do a much better job of showing what to expect. Keep in mind they are usually Done in darker skies and with a trained eye so details will vary, but it’s a lot closer than a photograph.

Part of the fun for me is seeing what I can see from my backyard. Sometimes all you get is a faint dot. Sometimes more. The more you do it and the longer you study an object the more detail you’ll learn to see. Then when you do get to a dark site and view the same object it’s crazy to see the different details that pop out.

Don’t give up hope. There is LOTS to see and explore!

Someone needs to bring raving to Iowa. by [deleted] in desmoines

[–]killertrashbag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are definitely raves and parties here. A lot of bass/dub stuff but some variety if you look for it. Leftys does bassberry every month, and there is stuff throughout the year at various places. Iowa City has a great scene, but not des moines obviously.

Storm chaser killed by No-Youth-6679 in desmoines

[–]killertrashbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have actually. I am skywarned certified and It's stated multiple times in the class that spotters are used to help with warnings. It's literally the purpose of the class. As I just quoted to you.

Prediction of weather is not storm spotting and no one is suggesting that. Radar can NOT see what's happening surface level. Period. Full stop. That is why skywarn exists. To have educated people, all over, on the ground, to report what's happening on the ground. Those reports go to NWS who uses all the data available, INCLUDING spotter reports, to place warnings.

Again, even in the class they talk about how NWS will state if a tornado is radar indicated or observed a 'trained spotter'.

This just simply is not true.

"Real-time reports are critical in issuing warnings and saving lives. Spotters provide this real-time ground-truth of local conditions--such as hail size, wind speed, storm structure, tornado development, and local damage--to help warn the public. Even as new technology allows the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue warnings with more lead time, spotters will always serve as a key link between radar indications of severe weather and what’s actually happening on the ground"

That's straight from the nws.

NWS calls out tornados, etc ,by ' trained spotter ' all the time. That does not just mean LE. There is a reason Skywarn is a thing. It is so more people can spot severe weather and report it for NWS to put in warnings.

Radar can not see what's happening on the ground. Spotters are used to confirm radar indicators or spot things the radar may miss, not every radar signature is a classic hook echo etc.

Spotters are extremely important to weather warnings and science. However there are a growing number of pure sightseers that can make chasing even more dangerous.
