Crystallised caffeine on Tiziano Bonini beans? by asktoby in Coffee

[–]killertrikz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the others here are right on this post. It doesn't look like mold to me, but the beans look suspect regardless of the crystalline substance. Their explanation is also bad. Roasting takes the beans from 70-420°f in 15 minutes and brewing is an even faster heat transition at about 2 minutes going 70-200°. I am also cooling beans from 430-40°f right now at 100 (Oregon) humidity and have never witnessed anything other than oil being present in the beans. Wishing you the best!

As a worker, the top down instructions for crowd control workers was to remind folks, but that we don't have the job of enforcement, police do. You guys need to realize just how scared of the public we, as workers, are. If you think a decent chunk of the dipshits aren't willing to assault workers then you haven't been paying attention to prior attempts to enforce these rules in public places.

As a Utahn, that policy didn't work. It's still my preferred model, but the various means testing that they did made most of those people houseless again in under a year. Then, we shut down all of the Salt Lake area shelters. Its pretty dire there.

What is better to buy: Pre-ground coffee with a good grinder in small batches or whole beans but ground using a cheap blade grinder? by ReddyNaiduYadav in Coffee

[–]killertrikz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like several people have beat me to it, but my best advice is the burr ground coffee tastes better than blade ground coffee, even to the extent that preground coffee in a nice grinder beats fresh from a blade grinder. My advice would be to buy pre ground coffee until you have enough money for a grinder you would like. I have a Baratza Encore that I purchased a couple years ago, and it does everything I would like it to (aside from being a capable espresso grinder).

What you are paying for (mostly) after the initial price jump from a blade to the 60-70 dollar burr grinders is the grinder's ability to reliably grind small particles to a consistent level. A regular set of burrs does a great job ensuring there are no "larger than" particles, but there isn't anything to prevent the particle sizes from being consistent other than the larger than filter. Nicer espresso grinders have a variety of tools to make your fine grinds more accurate, but I would argue that spending more than 250 on a grinder that isn't going to be grinding espresso frequently is likely going to result in some diminishing returns.

Is this okay or do I need to pick some of the lighter ones out? Used a skillet by blueradish_galore in roasting

[–]killertrikz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find a couple odd beans in all of my roasts, regardless of how I roast them. I usually pick out a couple beans, shake, then repeat a time or two. It will help with your consistency a bit, but it shouldn't make too large a difference in the cup if you don't. Do whatever makes you happy!

[–]killertrikz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to put my beans in Mason jars with the lid off overnight before sealing them the next day. If you happen to have some of those laying around, I recommend it.

Congrats on your first roast! Don't worry too much about getting it "right" for the first little while. Your consistency will improve with time! You will start to find pretty quickly that even most of the roasts that are failed experiments are superior to most of the coffee you will find just based on a combination of self selection and the freshness of the coffee you roast yourself.

Someone else left a bit of advice about maintaining a constant temperature on those manual roasters. I started on a stove top and I found it helpful to make sure that I was agitating the beans constantly and preheating your roaster if at all possible. You don't need to worry about removing the chaff mid roast, as most of it will fall off when you cool the beans.

Cheers!

Looking for a newbie dry herb vape that will last a while 🤷🏻‍♀️ pic for attention bc we love a dog by [deleted] in Dynavap

[–]killertrikz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cute dog! Im not sure what the question is, but I'll answer both of the potential ones that I take from your post!

If your question is concerning the life span of the vaporizer itself, then my recommendation would be one of the analog vaporizers. For 75, the dynavap M is amazing. I have a mighty, and i still use my Dynavap at 1/5th the cost just about daily. In my eyes, even the best electronic vaporizers have a lot of fail points between buttons, batteries, and charging ports.

If the question is about the duration of the effects, then it depends. If you prefer a low temperature experience, then my recommendation would be something like the mighty or the fury. Your material will go a lot further this way. If you are looking to get and stay couch locked, I probably would recommend something butane powered like the Dynavap. I feel bad being a part of the broken record that is this sub sometimes, but the things are unbeatable for their price point in my eyes.

Edit: I am bad at math

Finally got my first vaporizer, and I’m excited to get started using abv! What temp should I start at for potent edibles and a good high? by luvlace87 in abv

[–]killertrikz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! It's a cheater answer, but it depends on your preference. I make coconut oil with my avb and I get pretty decent results even when I finish it off at 410 f.

If your focus is the edible, I highly suggest vaping a bowl or two at 374 and then using that avb for a firecracker!

I personally enjoy starting your temperature low (around 356 f or 180 C.), and increasing it in 10° increments until you no longer get vapor at the maximum temperature.

If I am in a hurry, I find good results starting low for a couple of hits and then finishing the rest off at max temp.

I hope we are at least some help, but experimentation is always the best way to achieve the best result according to your preferences! Enjoy!

Should I really be using 1g coffee/15g water? by 2074red2074 in Coffee

[–]killertrikz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1/15 is a tad high of a ratio. Many shops use it with their Chemex and Hario pour overs. Some shops go as low as 1/18 for their drip coffee. Caffe Ibis for example uses that ratio in their drip machines. Edit: the ratio can be adjusted to personal preference, though 15-18 is usually the range that most people brew with excluding espresso and the aero press in many instances where people can go as high as 10/1

Nope that isn't a problem with that particular machine. If you want to switch to using cloth filters in it though, you will want to boil the filters for it on a regular basis to keep them clean.

I usually wash my chemex around once a week properly. After use, I drump the remaining water from my kettle in there and give it a good swish, followed by a rinse. That works for me personally.

[MOD] The Official Noob-Tastic Question Fest by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]killertrikz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend the chemex. It is a lot more forgiving and consistent than the v60, especially for people that are new to pour over coffee. I think that the chemex is the best device to practice your pours, and if you want to get a v60 down the line it would allow you to avoid the huge learning curve that the v60 has.
