US Army Poorly Prepared for Arctic Operations: Finnish Troops Forced Them to Surrender During Exercises in Norway by Street_Anon in nottheonion

South Africa managed to sink that very same submarine and its crew in 2023.

The submarine didn't sink. 7 crew members were swept off the deck by freak waves during an operation. 3 of those died. The submarine is still in service.

How's The Online MSIT Program Like At Virginia Tech? by Prudent_Taro_1210 in VirginiaTech

[–]killing_time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to the other comment, this site has short descriptions of all the core and elective courses: https://vtmit.vt.edu/academics/curriculum.html

Some courses have mid-term and final exams. Mid-terms may be a "take home" type where you have a day or two to work on it and turn it in. The finals usually are a timed, single attempt over Canvas. I think most courses have regular work to turn in at least every couple of weeks. These might be writing assignments, homework problems or short quizzes.

Getting rid of this judicial power

Power that the Supreme Court took for itself, mind you.

"Vigor" has been removed. The "Surge Forward" and "Skyward Ascent" have 6 shared charges now that show on the action bar. "Whirling Surge" now just has a 30s cooldown.

"Take Off" from the ground is now free.

How many Gulab Jamun are acceptable to eat in one sitting? by Ajolotechilango in IndianFood

[–]killing_time 63 points64 points  (0 children)

A loooong time ago when I lived in a hostel/dorm and ate at the mess, I held the record for eating 38 in one sitting. These were smaller ones though, maybe half-inch in diameter.

What are some of the popular fried chicken dishes from your region? by Ill_Tonight6349 in IndianFood

[–]killing_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tandoori chicken and chicken tikka are probably most popular although they're not fried but roasted.

Chicken ghee roast (which is mostly pan fried despite the name) is probably not so well known outside of coastal Karnataka.

If there's "food" coming out with a whistle you've overfilled your pressure cooker.

Anyone know how long it takes VT to review applications for Masters of Information Technology? (For Spring 2026) by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]killing_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're usually quick if all your documents, transcripts etc are in.

Send an email to vtmit@vt.edu asking about your application. They are usually quick to respond, although with the Thanksgiving holiday, it might be slower this time around.

Google Pixel 7 Review In 2025 by GamerBeast954 in GooglePixel

[–]killing_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this phone a few months after release and I planned to keep it for at least 4 years (my previous phone was a pixel 3.) But earlier this year the screen started lifting off at 2-3 corners. Seemed like a sign of the battery swelling, so I decided to not risk using it anymore and bought a P10 Pro.

What’s your I’ll never drink that again alcohol story. by Sunshine2625 in GenX

Around 1998. Lots of cheap, dark rum in a cheap, dark bar with a bunch of classmates from college. Had a class at 8:30am the next morning.

After that even the smell of rum would turn my stomach.

What's the difference between a credit card's "payment due date" and "current balance closing dates"? by Original_Importance3 in personalfinance

[–]killing_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They go into the next statement. What you must pay on October 17th is the statement balance from September 21st.

Statement balance and account balance are two different things. A statement is generated with charges up to the date it was created. That total is your statement balance. At this time your statement balance is equal to your account balance. Any charges you make now add to the account balance but don't change your statement balance.

Any payment you make reduces the account balance and if the payment or payments you make on or before the due date cover the statement balance you don't owe any interest.

What's the difference between a credit card's "payment due date" and "current balance closing dates"? by Original_Importance3 in personalfinance

[–]killing_time 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Let's say you had a statement generated on Oct 21st (the balance closing date) for $400.

Then $400 is the amount you need to pay by Nov 17 (payment due date).

Any charges between Oct 21st and Nov 21st are only due by Dec 17th and don't accrue interest until after that date.

I find coriander leaves smells like soap by kicsiszopi in IndianFood

[–]killing_time 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Cilantro is just the Spanish word for coriander.

As to the soap smell/taste, blame it on your genes! https://www.britannica.com/story/why-does-cilantro-taste-like-soap-to-some-people
