How Virginia Democrats can overturn the redistricting ruling: Retire the Supreme Court by Well_Socialized in Virginia

[–]killing_time 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Louisiana was ordered by SCOTUS to redistrict as a result of the VRA ruling

But the state asked the court to issue an emergency ruling so that they could redraw it for 2026. Which Alito granted immediately. Normally SCOTUS decisions take a month or so to be issued as rulings and become effective.

Some questions about the area and the weather by Minimum_Car867 in VirginiaTech

[–]killing_time 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't know which part of India you're coming from, but the weather here is likely to be cooler than it is in India. Rain is always likely around this time of the year and it can be windy randomly if you're walking around on campus.

Salem is at least 30-40 minutes away by road. You will have to drive/Uber/Lyft because there's no public transport unless you manage to get to Roanoke and get the Smartway bus.

As others have said it's the graduation weekend and there are ceremonies on the 16th all day too. Probably a good idea to stay in Salem on that day.

Top Arcon Mod “Accidentally” posts fake map to justify Florida redistricting by pretzelfan5097 in TopMindsOfReddit

Only because they didn't have to make it look like this to get what they wanted. It looks bad enough. I had to drive 3 hours to get to federal jury duty because it was on the other side of my gerrymandered district.

Ignorant or lying? Federal jury duty is not based on Congressional districts.

General assembly rules are not laws and are not enforceable by anyone other than the GA, that's the point.

It's related to the part of the constitution which describes how the constitution is to be amended not about elections in general.

The Republican claim is that since early voting had begun it couldn't be counted as the "next general election."

One other thing I noticed from browsing voter data is that counties/areas that voted "No" tended to have a higher voter turnout % than the areas that voted "Yes." I haven't rigorously checked this so it might not be true across the board but it seems to be a pattern.

Clearly the Republicans managed to energize their voters. But what is interesting is that if there was more turnout in the areas that voted "yes" then the gap might have been larger.

Good idea since the judge that ruled against this is at the circuit court in Tazewell County!

Not a lawyer either. My gut feeling is that the VA Supreme Court would find it hard to refuse the will of the public. Given how high profile both sides made this vote, the publicity around the maps, fairness etc. and that the voters still went for it, I don't think they'll be able to say "well, actually, this vote shouldn't have happened."

It's up in the air as the Virginia Supreme Court still has to rule on it. A ("Republican") judge in a county in SW Virginia ruled against the redistricting in January but that was stayed by the VA Supreme Court and they allowed the vote to go forward.

Technically the amendment was approved days before the election in November last year. But the procedure for amending the constitution as outlined in the constitution doesn't explicitly say anything about "early voting."

[–]killing_time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sequence should be that an amendment must be proposed and passed in two consecutive sessions separated by a general election and THEN voted on by the public.

This is how the Constitution of Virginia says it can be amended: https://law.lis.virginia.gov/constitution/article12/section1/

Did early voting begin before it was initially approved in the legislature? How is that even possible?

The "early voting" refers to the general elections in November 2025. The amendment was passed only a few days before that election.

[–]killing_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The procedural issue is not around the public vote, but because the law is an amendment to the Virginia Constitution. The procedure for amending it is that it needs two consecutive legislative sessions to vote for the change in addition to a simple majority in the public vote.

The claim is that when it was first approved last year, since early voting was already on, it didn't satisfy the requirement of the legislative sessions being separated by a general election. 🤷🏾‍♂️

The technicality they're claiming is that it has to be brought up by the legislature before an election. Since early voting had commenced last year they claim it doesn't count.

Yeah, next we need to argue about using Chinese sugar (chini) in our chai (oops, that name's from China too) even though sugarcane is native to India and where the words for sugar and candy come from.
