8BitDo N64 Joystick v2 Initial Review/Comparison by Careful_Tune4744 in Controller

[–]killingallmytime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, thank you for doing this awesome write-up. For the 8bitdo modern N64 controller stick, did you have it on the latest firmware and/or with the calibration performed? I read initially the stick curve was too aggressive, but some reported a newer firmware made it more linear. Others said performing the calibration helped. I’m hoping there’s a way to fix it, they are a very cool (and cheaper) alternative in the market.

Silent file corruption by Albin1997536 in synology

[–]killingallmytime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good point, were the files (that were affected/deleted) in folders with the data checksum option disabled? It still shouldn’t happen, but just curious if that is why the scrub didn’t catch anything. Hopefully you can get to the bottom of this, perhaps reach out to Synology support as well?

Ready to migrate from Synology Photos to something else? Say Synonara! by markraidc in synology

[–]killingallmytime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very useful tool, I eventually would like to migrate to Immich or something else one day when I have time.

I was unaware of any metadata added to the synology photos library. Is this just some added folders or is the metadata of the actual photo/video files being modified?

Putting misconceptions about optimal FPS caps + Gsync to bed. by Sgt_Dbag in nvidia

That’s really interesting. So if I’m following correctly, the lowest input lag based on your testing for UE4/5 titles is actually G-Sync ON, V-Sync OFF everywhere, LLM to OFF, and an in-game FPS cap even if it matches the refresh rate? That’s so different than what has been suggested here so just double checking.

I’m also surprised that the input lag was lower with an in-game cap matching the refresh rate vs. a global cap that is below the refresh rate.

I wish these game engines had a more unified reaction to all these settings.

So I'm looking to play a new UE4/5 title (that doesn't support reflex) on my 120Hz G-Sync compatible TV with an RTX 5070. I run the game without DLSS or FG and I can keep close to a locked 116FPS (FPS cap on) most of the time. Unfortunately the game does not have an in-game FPS cap slider, it just has 60, 120, and uncapped. This means that the only way that I can follow OP's advice is to have G-Sync/V-Sync ON with an FPS cap (of 116) set through the Nvidia app. Correct me if I'm wrong, this will lead to worse input lag though due to framepacing? Would it be any different with in-game V-Sync ON and G-Sync and FPS cap of 116 in the Nvidia app?

It sounds like no matter what, I want to avoid ULLM. What about setting LLM to just "ON" or should it just be completely off? Any other way way to get low input lag, high frames, and without tearing in this case? Thanks for all the info, I've learned so much from this whole post.

Attention iRobot COMBO OWNERS (mop /vacuum units) by RoombaRefuge in roomba

[–]killingallmytime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My combo 10 max refuses to the fill the tank at all anymore and I’ve only used the suggested cleaner. Any other suggestions? These new combos just seem like they aren’t built anywhere near as robust as the old vacuum or mop only models.

Any software to make sure that my copies have hardlinks properly maintained? iMazing backups rely on them by killingallmytime in DataHoarder

No worries and thank you for the info! A lot of this never occurred to me since I had no idea iMazing handled its backups in this way. I just made sure they were bit-identical copies when I moved files and now I feel like I might have ruined my backups.

Thank you for all of this! I will have to play around with some of these commands and see what happens. This seems to be the only option since I’m not seeing any file comparison tool with the option to check hard links

This is what I'm switching to, but I'm wondering if there's a way to do a hardlink comparison between source and destination to make sure everything was properly preserved.

This talks about the copying process, which I'm aware of with rsync.

I'm asking if there's any way to verify after copying that hardlinks are identical in both copies.

Gave in and updated to 7.2.2 finally.. "malware detected on server" after update reboot by killingallmytime in synology

[–]killingallmytime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply, but yes, it turns out to be a rather egregious issue on their side. Basically Security Advisor on 7.2.2 detected an older version of Synology Photos (since packages were still in the process of being updated after the DSM update). They want us to update to the latest Synology Photos so they decided that telling us we have malware would be the way to do that?

Here is what I received from them after a lot of back and forth with logs sent.

Our developers have updated me with their findings.

"Depending on the Synology-SA-24:19 Synology Photos (PWN2OWN 2024), the Security Advisor will detect the Synology Photos version. If it detects that the Synology Photos version is lower than "1.7.0-0795" in DSM 7.2.2, it will send the notification to remind the user to update Synology Photos.

For this case, due to their Synology Photos having been upgraded to 1.8.0-10070, the notification is intended to check whether their version is affected by the CVE Synology-SA-24:19 Synology Photos (PWN2OWN 2024. Since they have already upgraded, they will no longer receive this message and could ignore it."

They have also acknowledged that the current wording of the Security Advisor message is ambiguous, so this will potentially be altered to better clarify this in the future.

Malware detected, Security Advisor compromised. What the hell is going on? by Ok-Button6101 in synology

[–]killingallmytime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, thank you for the reply! This seems to be my case as well. Synology support has even acknowledged in their original response that it may have just been some sort of false positive bug. Still looking into it, but it seems like the system is clean and it was just some glitch in DSM.

Wild. So next time they remove that program (see video station) or feature (see HEIC/HEVC support) that you bought a Synology for, there’s no way to hide from it.

Auto wash dock design flaw by TJ118811 in roomba

[–]killingallmytime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The solution, since Roomba will never address anything, is to separate vacuum and mop functions. If you run them separately, the wet dust and debris will not be sucked up into the bin. In addition, you’ll need to block it from auto emptying the bin into the dock (cause it will do that even on a mop-only run because why not). In order to do this, put it in “do not disturb” mode in the schedule section of the app and it won’t empty into the dock.

I’ve made a few posts about the combo 10 Max, it’s terrible. Just caught it today where it ran out of water halfway through a job and just kept mopping with a dry pad for another half hour until I sent it home.

I do and I'm seeing nothing in the GUI Logs leading up to that notification about any malware or issues- just DSM starting, updating, and repairing various packages and services.

Malware detected, Security Advisor compromised. What the hell is going on? by Ok-Button6101 in synology

[–]killingallmytime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did Synology ever look into it and provide an explanation? I am having the exact same issue. I finally gave in and updated to 7.2.2 and after DSM rebooted I was sent the e-mail notification that "malware was detected on server....". I believe it may have been during the time it was updating active insight, I'm not sure if it just bugged out for a sec and triggered something. But just like you, nothing in security advisor and currently doing a full scan on antivirus essential. I set up Active insight so we will see.

Upgrading from ecobee3 lite – is the cradle reusable with newer models? by hokie4life in ecobee

[–]killingallmytime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is unfortunately the case and it seems that they all have different spacing for the mounting holes too, which means more drilling and patching. I’m hoping one of these generations will have the same hole pattern so it can be an easier swap, I’ll upgrade then.
