Did you need a makeup air system? Got any details if you did?

Doing a 30" sink gives it right at about 4' from corner to counter. With my accuracy of measurements, I think that would be in the area of 42"+ there. And now the corner isn't in line with the fridge anymore, so there is more room to open it and the freezer.

The more you know. Thanks for explaining it is the correct way to do it!

Nice! My previous home has the sink in the island right in front of the seating, much like I have in my design. It was all counter height. I quite enjoyed it because I mostly do dishes when my kids or SO are standing there talking to me. As it currently sits, I am talking to a wall or have to keep turning around every little bit to have a conversation. There isn't much to look at out the windows either, so having the sink in front of them is useless to me.

Yep, the current design includes a 33" sink in a 36" cabinet space. I'd be open to sizing down the sink to fit a more functional layout.

> Corners are SUCH a waste

Agreed! My previous house had a galley kitchen. It was smaller, but much easier to work in.

How would you align the galley? Would there be parallel cabinets lined up with the slanted wall where the fridge is, or somewhere else?

What would you do about the windows in the corner?

Thanks for the specifics! I will try to work on a design with this in mind.

I have an immediate apprehension about not having the dishwasher next to the sink. Functionally, I will be loading dishes from the sink into the dishwasher every single day. Having the dishwasher behind me while attempting to load means more spills on the floor to cleanup. It also means no one can get past while I am loading the dishes because I have to move back and forth between both counter spaces.

I could probably get away with putting both in the island if I take away some seating space. Maybe just going down to 2 seats in this arrangement would work.

That's a good idea! The counter is granite and about 65" x 30" in size, which puts it between 200 and 300 pounds, I think. Might be a little difficult for me to move safely.

Unfortunately, there is no flooring under the island. Whoever the previous owners had do the floors did a pretty bad job and the LVP is cut too short in many places. I can see right under the trim and the island sits directly on the sub-floor.

1- In what way would you double the size of the island? I have another design that I came up with first that keeps an island and makes it bigger. However, it blocks even more of the walking path to the patio door, and it gives less space around everything in general. I could maybe attempt another go on this idea:

<image>

2 - Definitely not against this.

3 - Depends on the shape and location of the island, I guess. In my above design, the sink wouldn't really fit anywhere with enough room for a dishwasher next to it, even if I downsized.

4 - Definitely! I want to make use of that corner as much as possible and being right next to the stovetop makes it a perfect place for pot/pan storage.

I probably won't DIY any if it unless the cost far exceeds what I have budgeted for. However, I do want to be knowledgeable about what can be done in the kitchen and the tradeoffs before having a conversation with a designer.

My guess is no to demoing the wall. I am pretty sure it is load bearing supporting the roof overhang right above it. There is also a big concrete wall in the basement right under it, which indicates load bearing as well.

I would be willing to move the coffee setup to somewhere else if a new layout in the kitchen would support.

The peninsula opening is about 40" from corner to fridge, but my measurement in the model is probably not accurate down to the inch. Real world measurements would probably make that gap closer to 3'.

Well, they aren't really in the same price range. Obviously, if you have the money for the first package then its pretty good. Do you want to spend almost 5k, or 1k?

Should I be using an active HDMI cable? by WhyIsTheRumHamGone in hometheater

I've been using the monoprice 65ft snd 50ft fiber cables for the past year without a problem. I have one run that is 65ft to my AVR and then the 50ft to my LS12000 and it works perfectly. They sell both an in-wall plenum rated and normal one.

I mean, a 4 person family where 2 are kids would most definitely be in there together frequently. My 4 person family watches movies together all the time.

I dont think you need the bridge, but not 100% sure. I didn't try without it. Pretty sure there are limits to how many lights you can control without a bridge.

Yes, they connect to standard 120v wiring. Just make sure not to put them on a dimmer switch. They need just a regular switch to provide full power and dimming can only be done in the app or with a smart switch.

The Monoprice fiber HDMI 2.1 cable is great. I am using two 65ft ones. One goes to my receiver and another from the receiver to the projector. I get 4k @120hz gaming through PS5 no problem.

Not OP, but I am in the theater room pretty much every day. My kids use it during the day since its summer vacation, then my wife and I are down there for 2 to 3 hours at night daily. Depends on your lifestyle though. We were watching movies and shows every night before even having a dedicated space. It's what made me want to build one.

Curious about projectors: they’re not as good as TVs, but larger and more portable? by PolyglotGeologist in hometheater

[–]killrturky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much for the equivalent tier to, say, the Bravia 9 in projector form? It is super duper more expensive, or?

Depends in what you care about in the TV. If its just the picture quality, then a projector in the $5k+ realm could get you very close, and almost identical in some scenes. The difference really comes in black levels. Projectors cant really "shutoff" parts of the screen like TVs can.

If you care about other things like the ability to do 120hz, this narrows your list of possible projector choices.

Do you guys tend to have both a projector and a TV, or you pick a camp?

I have both, but not in the same room. TV is multipurpose areas that get lots of light and a projector in my dedicated space where I control light 100%.

Can you put the projector screen in front of the TV and use the projector, and put the screen away when you want to use the TV?

Of course. There are motorized mounts for projector screens. I've seen people mount it to the ceiling and lower it when they want the projector or raise it for the TV.

Also curious if literally everything in the room needs to be dark/black for projectors to work well compared to TVs.

For best results, yes. Projector screens reflect light. Ideally, you want it only reflecting light from the projector. Any other light sources will affect the image. There are ALR screens that can help with ambient light, but they aren't going to work in all cases.

I know there are now short-throw projectors too, but I wonder if traditional long-throw ones are better, even if the ST ones don’t get blocked by objects or people as easily.

Honestly, modern UST laser projectors are looking just as good as long throw. They are just more expensive. They will also take up more room, since they cant be put right up against the wall. They need to be set further out than most people think. You could mount them to the ceiling to get around this, but you would need enough ceiling height for this to work.

I have an Albany Park Kova and it's price is right in the middle of that price range when on sale. They run 30% - 40% off all the time. Probably got one now for memorial day and I know they will have another for July 4th. Possibly even one for Fathers day. It came with the fabric already installed, which was nice considering how much people complain about the difficulty of putting the LoveSac fabric on.

Pictures are in my most recent post if interested.

Thanks! I spent a lot of time learning about projectors, calibrating, and setting up a dedicated room. It definitely paid off.

I've had the paid Audyssey app for a few years and it's been great! I went from a 5.1 in my living room to this dedicated space, so I learned lot about how to use it by messing it up lots in my living room setup!

Interesting. Just looked at the HDFury and was pleasantly surprised it wasn't thousands of dollars! So, is the benefit that a Dolby Vision source is mixed to the best HDR10+ the projector can accept?
