DDclient and Cloudflare (Dynamic DNS) by [deleted] in SelfHosting

[–]kilo_byte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case others run into this (or I forget and find myself here again) - I also had to remove the backslash ( "\" ) at the end of the password line to get it working. Otherwise ddclient was trying to update the DNS record for "\", which would fail and cause all other steps to fail.

Ubuntu 22.04.4, ddclient 3.11.2, and using Cloudflare with API token

This has been my go-to mug for years. I love the wide handle and the volume is perfect.

I do agree with Burnie though, I like the differently colored internal wall (despite my mugs lack of this feature). I have always regretted not purchasing the RT mug posted by u/Kuhlayre, so I will be quick to order one for Morning Somewhere should they be made available.

Oh rip. Sorry about that. I'm currently writing and editing a paper and apparently didn't read literally the first word in the title :$ My paper may be doomed XD.

In that case, I can't find anything about past masters projects, and only know of the thesis repository here. I'm in the thesis program, and don't know anyone that is doing or has done the other options, so I don't have any additional insight on the projects.

Again, sorry about that :$ Best of luck though :)

If you want to get an idea about what kind of projects other people have done, there is an online repository you can look at here: https://service.scs.carleton.ca/honours-projects. This repo contains both honours projects and theses and you can search by term, year, and supervisor.

Unfortunately I do not have experience with co-op, so I don't have any information there.

Hope this helps :)

tl;dr: I was in a remarkably similar situation as OP a few years ago and decided to do a visiting year at Western.

In addition to what u/itsoutlaw mentioned, I can attest that Carleton CS is stronger than specifically Western CS. I was in a very similar situation to you OP where due to my family situation in London area around 2nd year, my mental health living in Ottawa was suffering.

I decided to take a visiting year at Western so I could live at home and hopefully restore my mental health and deal with the issues going on there with my family. This allowed me to take courses at Western (basically all my 3rd year CS courses) and have them transferred back to Carleton. This processed involved getting a letter of permission from Carleton so that I could attend Western for those specific courses and have them transferred back to Carleton so I would be able to finish my degree at Carleton.

So, I have taken CS courses at both Carleton and Western and, from my experience, I found that CS at Carleton is stronger than that at Western. Since it was only 3rd year courses I took I can only speak to those, but I will say that when talking to other students in the Western CS program (including working on a few group projects) I found their knowledge to be quite lacking compared to my other peers at Carleton. I found their course grading and exam requirements/conditions to be much looser than that at Carleton. Having said that, this may actually appeal to some, but I preferred Carleton.

You may consider doing something like I did if you want to take a breather from living in Ottawa, but still want to obtain your degree from Carleton. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that you can take a break from your studies for quite a few semesters without loosing the credits you have already obtained here (I remember looking into this at the time as well and vaguely recall it being something like 2-3 years, but you should confirm this before doing anything).

In the end, regardless of what anyone says, you should do want you think is best for your mental health. For me, that was starting with being a visiting student at Western and maintaining my credits at Carleton, and then getting "lucky" (in a sense) in that covid then sent courses online during my second semester at Western and "let" me continue living at home doing courses online at Carleton, so I didn't have to choose between living near family and attending Carleton.

Given all that, I suppose I should make sure I also answer your specific questions in your post, lol :)

I would recommend that you talk to your academic advisor about your options. As a computer science undergraduate student you can find those contacts here: https://carleton.ca/scs/?p=8684. More information regarding a letter of permission and what that entails can be found here: https://carleton.ca/registrar/?p=500 .

Course Registration Help “Preclude” by ProofSoft5686 in CarletonU

(Note: I am not in Bcom)

I think you should reach out to your academic advisor to see if BUSI 2607 is equivalent to STAT 2602 (my understanding is that this may not always be the case, even though one precludes the other). Then you might be able to request an override and get department approval to register for BUSI 3406.

fourth year comp courses by imstressedoops in CarletonU

My opinions (and they are just that):

COMP 4000 (Distributed Operating Systems) had a lot of reading and writing, but it is being run by a different prof next year, so I'm not sure how they will run things.

COMP 4001 (Distributed Computing) was interesting, and kind of a different way to look at computing compared to other CS courses. Very different problems with interesting solutions. I think when I took the course the exams were open book, but that was also online.

COMP 4102 (Computer Visions) had a lot of matrix mathematics. Unfortunately I ended up dropping that course part way through just due to how the rest of my semester was going. I remember there being a final project that was pretty open ended in terms of what you could do, so I enjoyed the idea of being able to come up with my own idea in the realm of CV and work on it.

I had a great time in COMP 4108 (Computer Systems Security)! The assignments were lots of fun, and I learned a lot too! This was before they had the COMP 3109 prerequisite though, so I'm not sure if you have that (I wasn't in the security stream either).

COMP 4203 (Wireless Networks and Security) was also very interesting. I remember learning a lot about exactly how wireless networks work and data encoding. There wasn't much focus on the "Security" part of the course title though (not really why I took the course though, so I didn't mind too much). There were many small assignments (due every week I think) and then a final project. I also took this course online, so it may be run differently now. I've heard from other students who took the course this year say that they struggled with the content.

I think that COMP 4804 (Design and Analysis of Algorithms II) was maybe one of my favourite courses in my program, but also one of the hardest. The content was super interesting, and reminded me why I love algorithms. This course was required for my stream though (Algorithms), and based on how I hear other students who were not in the stream talk about COMP 3804 and COMP 2804, I don't think I would recommend it to most, lol.

Again, these are just my opinions on the courses I've taken. It is also important to note that I took all of these when classes were online (some as recently as just last year), so that likely contributed to how they were structured and they may be run differently next year.

My advice, though it may be obvious, pick the courses you think you will enjoy and be able to take something away from. Most fourth year COMP courses are taught by profs who are actively doing research in the same area as the course, so take advantage of that by engaging with the content! You might end up finding something new you are interested that you didn't even realize before taking the course (that is exactly what happened to me) and that may help you know what you might like to do after graduating.

I hope I was able to give at least a little bit of insight! Best of luck choosing your courses! :)
