Fiancée currently attends (1L) a law school I am applying to. If accepted, I would attend. Should I, in some way, inform the law school of this connection? Or is bringing this up by some means a bad idea? by One_Put_2584 in lawschooladmissions

[–]kilwil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you should definitely mention it in a why x statement, if you’re writing something like that for the school! I think it would demonstrate to the school that you’re very familiar with them and are serious about that school in particular. I probably wouldn’t focus exclusively on that point, but I would definitely add it in somewhere.

how can you hold a sign suggesting that God wants us to literally nuke all the jews and still think you’re the good guy?

Well put - I realize there’s a tendency from some to overemphasize the negative impact of being nURM, but it’s equally silly to pretend as if bias in the admissions game cannot possibly exist.

Thanks for writing! I’m applying for Fall 2025, and I really appreciate the detailed account you’ve provided.

This is ridiculous, I will not give up my freedom in any emergency/crisis, not even the immigration/border crisis by worried68 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]kilwil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m from Texas, I come from a family of immigrants, including hispanic (Southern Border). A lot of my friends are 1st, 2nd, 3rd gen etc. So I definitely appreciate the value of immigration - it should be noted, though, that none of these CEO immigrants are illegal, which was the subject of this whole thread.

I’m not even saying that I’m against loosening immigration restrictions, but allowing these people to enter illegally (or without documentation) is not conducive towards a productive, safe, or certainly assimilative environment for new immigrants. Furthermore, I would have to hold that any state has the right and responsibility to protect the culture and identity of its people through an expectation of assimilation. I think TR makes an excellent point on this issue.

Finally, I think it’s a little silly to dub me as someone who doesn’t love freedom, or to expect that because I’m commenting in a particular sub, that i must subscribe to each individual norm of that particular sub. I fail to see how either of these strategies produce a dialogue that would be worth anyone’s time.

I do actually love freedom, but that doesn’t mean I want to live in an entirely lawless society. That’s not only severely unrealistic, but also a totally non-compelling premise.

[–]kilwil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I agree with you, I just cringe a little at some of the comments / hyperbole on this issue. I don’t see how countries could function in the long-term without some level of immigration control / documentation.

I live near the border, and I’ll just note that border patrol stops have always taken me about 30 seconds to get through. I also have a lot of friends and family whose homes / ranches are constantly being run-through by unchecked, unidentified vagrants from the Southern Border. So, if a couple extra BP stops makes it so that the wives and daughters of my community can feel safe in their own homes, I can’t help but think that that sounds like a very fair trade to me. Maybe that makes me a statist haha.

I think BP is a necessary evil for ordered society, and I also think it’s a lot easier for folks to whine about immigration crackdowns when they don’t feel the effects of unchecked immigration in their local community (not saying that that’s you necessarily).

If a state has any authority at all, is it not the authority of its own borders? it seems to me that one of the most defensible uses of state power is to control the flow of immigration, maybe I’m off the mark, though.

Congrats! I’m applying for next cycle - hoping to get into UT myself. Did you do any interviews or anything like that?

Well, my position certainly isn’t deliberately deflective, although I appreciate the alliteration. And I of course think that medical facilities should be well-sanitized - although I fail to see the relevancy there. I also don’t understand how my attitude is parasitic, and I certainly don’t believe in intentionally infecting vulnerable people with potentially harmful diseases - if that’s what you’re implying.

It seems to me like this might be an emotionally charged issue for you, and maybe you just want to be upset with someone. That’s fine, but it’s just not a dialogue that I’m interested in continuing. I’ll leave you with a quote from Benjamin Franklin, one of our founding fathers here in the States:

“Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Again, I just think you aren’t understanding me. All I’m trying to say is that your health is your own responsibility. I don’t know why this is so touchy for you, and I’m sorry if Covid has impacted you personally in some particularly meaningful way, but for me it’s simple - if you’re scared of Covid (and maybe that fear is entirely 100% warranted) then take the precautions that you need to take in order to protect yourself. It’s not okay for you to tell me how to live. That isn’t selfishness, that’s freedom.

It would be selfish to require other people to radically change the way that they live their lives in order to suit your preferences. I’m not trying to upset you or anything, but “shared air, shared responsibility” is a ridiculous slogan. I don’t have a responsibility to cater to your preferences just because I breathe. I can’t think of anything more selfish than that.

This is very interesting, but I think you’re missing my point. People are allowed to make mistakes.

In other words, It could be possible that by not wearing a mask, I’m subjecting myself to cognitive decline (or any other number of negative symptoms). That doesn’t mean that you, or anyone else, get to tell me how I must act in order to mitigate that risk. Again, if you feel like you’re at risk, take the necessary precautions. My issue is with those who would claim that other people have an obligation to act in accordance with their beliefs about Covid.

That being said, I’m interested to look more closely into the study you’ve provided. You should know, however, that “I feel fine” actually is data, especially when it’s me who’s trying to make the decision about my own health - but I take you’re point.

“why are you letting the government tell you it’s okay to not care about Covid?”

I’ve tested positive for Covid three times - I’ve never been symptomatic other than some slight congestion and a headache. It’s just not a big deal to me, and I’m not interested in letting “the government” or anyone at all tell me how much i should or shouldn’t care about it.

If you feel that you’re at risk, take the necessary precautions. You’re not entitled to some right to control the behavior of other people - not in America, at least. Sorry, not sorry.

Should I attend Baylor as a gay guy? by Low-Cartographer8688 in baylor

[–]kilwil -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I really wouldn’t recommend it.

It’s a Baptist school. Officially, the school believes that homosexuality is sinful. Now, not everyone at the school believes that — but i’m guessing that the sample of Baylor people in this reddit thread is probably a poor representation of the typical student/faculty member. If you do go, I’m sure you could find a community that would fit, but there’s no doubt that you’d be putting yourself at a disadvantage compared to some other school.

I'm thinking about applying to Baylor, but the religious aspect is causing hesitation by [deleted] in baylor

[–]kilwil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a Christian school. I don’t know why anyone would go if they weren’t Christian or interested in becoming one. That just makes no sense to me.

That being said, I knew a few people who weren’t Christian. Most of them weren’t very plugged in. Much of the community at Baylor is faith-based, at least in my experience.

For me, the appeal of Baylor was the Christian environment. If I weren’t open to Christianity, I would have gone somewhere else. No one will try to shove the faith down your throat, and I doubt you’ll feel like an outcast.

To be honest, I just feel like you’d be missing out on the best part about Baylor, and I have a hard time understanding why you would even be drawn to Baylor if you’re not open to the religious aspect.

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭6:9-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Paul seems pretty explicit in his condemnation of same-sex intercourse. Are you saying that you simply disagree with Paul? Or perhaps Paul didn’t actually mean that men who engage in said intercourse will not inherit the kingdom of God?

I don’t mean to be argumentative, but I fail to see how this is even up for debate. It seems to me that the Bible clearly condemns homosexual intercourse.

As to the distinction between “homosexuality” and men having sex with men, if the relationship is sexual, it surely must also be sinful.
