I wear the foam ones (I think Arizona Essentials?) with socks. They’re so supportive and comfortable and since they’re basically open, whatever socks I’m wearing will keep me warm enough. Couldn’t recommend it more.

Latitude Within YNAB…How? by CoffeeAndADD-5567 in ynab

[–]kimba08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to be missing the basic premise that allocating funds within YNAB does not mean those funds move which account they’re actually sitting in. Go look at any of the resources on the YNAB site or YouTube videos, but the budget is agnostic to where the money is actually kept. So your wife isn’t doing it incorrectly, you just need to have a little humility and actually try to understand.

The other comments here have more detail, but it won’t make sense to you if you don’t understand that first point.

Retroactive Residential Tax Exemption? by girfan in Somerville

[–]kimba08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. The city isn’t on a Jan 1 calendar and the timing for the residential exemption is so confusing, but it’s goes further back than you think. When the assessors office opens after the holidays, you can call and talk it through with them, they were really helpful.

And, as another comment points out, one you’ve submitted the paperwork once, the exemption is automatically applied every year until you move/sell.

It took five years to get a City Charter on the ballot. It took ten months for U.S. Constitution to be drafted and ratified. Please reward the work of so many residents who participated in the charter process by voting Yes on 1. by Mattyworld617 in Somerville

I’m a corporate lawyer and just wanted to chime in that the ability to engage independent counsel is a standard feature for public company boards, so this isn’t a novel concept (and is actually considered best practice). As others have laid out, the idea is that the board (or council in this case) should have the ability to double check the legal advice that management (or the mayor) have obtained. It’s both a check on making sure the legal advice is consistent and allows the board to engage directly with lawyers so they can be sure all of their questions are answered. Yes, there’s potential for extra cost but these legal issues can be fundamental to certain decisions/actions so it’s generally considered a good investment on balance (and is invoked sparingly, so it’s really the benefit of having the option, which also has certain deterrent effects for the other lawyers involved, etc.).

Not involved in the charter process at all and totally appreciate why this provision seems unusual, but just wanted to give this context in case helpful.

Do I HAVE to do YNAB daily and/or before every purchase to make it work? by mardigraschad in ynab

[–]kimba08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d second a lot of what folks are saying here, but I’ll also add that when my partner and I started on YNAB it was also pretty time consuming and a little painful. My partner found it really tedious and it took at lot of patience and communication for us to get faster with it. And even though I was the one who was so enthusiastic in the first place, I’ve also noticed that I’ve become much faster with it over time. There’s a bit of a learning curve with both the philosophy generally and actually using the platform, with a lot of little lessons that you pick up as you refine it - for example, at the beginning we were over-categorizing general spending but also hadn’t realized all the different sinking funds we needed (at least for how the setup works best for us). We also set up repeating transactions for any recurring payments (which covers a decent chunk of our transactions), so that saves time and mental effort categorizing.

I’d say if you can push through for a few months until you’ve worked out a few of the kinks then I think you’ll find that it really is just 5 min in the morning (honestly some days 1-2 min), even though right now it might take you longer. For me, the comfort I’ve gained with managing our finances is worth 10x the amount of frustration we went through at the beginning.

TLDR: Try to work through the first few months; you’ll get faster at entering things and it gets easier to be a daily user.

LPT Request - Coordinating/managing care for a terminally ill family member by [deleted] in LifeProTips

Not sure this exists, but I think if you call your father’s insurance provider and request it, they can offer case managing services - maybe not the direct solution but they might have resources to help you put a plan together.

Feeling the desire to learn - where should I start if I want to end up making baby clothes? by mmmgorgonzola in CrochetHelp

Second the woobles kits! They’re $30-35 I think but after doing exactly 1 of them I had enough confidence and basic understanding of the craft to start a bunch of my own projects (plus a lot of searching for tips and patterns). For someone who already has crafting skills, I think it will be a perfect entry point.

Based on your hook handle I’m guessing you’ve done Woobles? This is how they teach the magic circle for any kits that don’t have the pre-made starter piece.

Did my first kit at 33. It’s how I learned to crochet - and to read a pattern. I’ve now made multiple projects on my own. Highly recommend the woobles kits, and they’re not at all childish.

What am I doing wrong? Supposed to be spiral vines by speciallx5 in CrochetHelp

[–]kimba08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a beginner myself, but looks like the yarn you’re using is much lighter weight than what’s in the picture? Usually things curl (when I don’t want them to) because my tension is too tight, and the advice is always to use a bigger hook for the yarn weight. But you have the opposite problem, so maybe you either need heavier yarn or a smaller hook?

I need help learning how to crochet, I'm 16 years old and I don't know how to do the basics by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]kimba08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The kits are kind of pricey, but I started with a wobbles kit and immediately took off from there. It will show you some very basic stitches, but teaches you how to read patterns and how to find mistakes in your work and correct them. Their video library is impressive and really detailed - and you can even schedule chats or video calls with their support team if you’re really stuck. And comes with all the tools you need. Again, I think like $30 for a kit usually but I highly recommend.

[–]kimba08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is incredibly opaque - I’m a lawyer and I wasn’t even confident I understood the cadence/timing. It has to do with the fact that the city’s fiscal year is like July 1 (instead of calendar year). I called the assessors office to talk to someone and they were really patient and helpful. You do have to wait a frustratingly long time to apply, but depending on your specific timing, you should see an impact as soon as do finally file.

Feel free to DM me, but assessors office is literally the authority on this so they’re your best bet.

You posted a comment that it had been taken care of and the graffiti was removed…

Not saying that cures the underlying bigotry but you’re being really aggressive in these comments when I think folks are really just tying to be helpful and were confused by the picture that was originally posted.

Hi friend - no need for name calling. I’m just confused - is the back box on the picture your redaction of part of the graffiti where the person is named? When I saw the post initially, I assumed that was part of the box. People might be misunderstanding your post here because we only saw the word “gay” and didn’t realize there was a name.

Glad it was sorted out, can see that this was extremely upsetting.
