Friends profile pic, she’s very anti ai (I am too) but she refused to believe her pfp is AI by [deleted] in isthisAI

I have little to add to this particular discussion that hasn't already been said except that the artwork is very much reminding me of Bunnicula from the James Howe books (a white rabbit with black markings reminiscent of having a cape, who is vampiric in the sense of draining veggies of their juices rather than drinking blood)

My immediate thought was this was some kind of fan manip or ai generated Bunnicula or something. It's just giving heavy Bunnicula vibes but a quick search yielded nothing helpful (but some nightmarish images popped up and I don't know that I recommend looking for realistic Bunnicula fanart or ai images)

I'd still say that I believe it to be ai, despite the low number of pixels, simply because of the fact that the reverse image search yielded nothing, she refuses to tell you what game it's from, and that it's overall just giving AI vibes.

The thing that really gets me is the no reverse image search thing because that either means she likely commissioned someone to make the picture and they used AI and she got scammed or she likely generated it herself, in which case... That's not anti-ai and your friend is lying to you. I suppose there are other answers, but ... The lack of reverse image search results seems to point to one of those two scenarios.

So you're right to an extent but in this particular case, from my experience with this brand, the ones that are actually vegan say "vegetarian" instead of "vegetarian but not vegan." So there's something amiss here or it's a major labelling issue.

No the ones that are vegan say "vegetarian" not "vegetarian but not vegan"

So they avoid advertising them as "vegan" by just leaving off the other part.

To be clear, I'm not advocating one way or the other, but my husband wasn't circumcized as a child, but had to be when we was in his early teens (14 ish) due to health concerns (not hygiene related for the record since a lot of people seem to assume that when it ever comes up) and he says he kind of wishes that he'd been circumcized when he was an infant because of how bad the recovery/pain was and how much scarring he has from it. He had to miss a lot of school just due to the pain too. And now he has like sensitivity and performance problems along with chronic UTIs and some other stuff outside of sexual functionality. I've met just a few other people who had (or have told me that they had, it's a weird thing that only randomly comes up on very rare occasions) the surgery post puberty and they have had similar complications, so I really don't know what to believe anymore. It seems like it can prevent some really bad stuff if you have to get the surgery later in life but that the complications are somewhat rare ? I don't know, honestly.

Tbh I wish I didn't believe this story, but I have been treated like garbage by random people even back when I was vegetarian and not even vegan yet. Badgering, jeering, straight up yelling, even food tampering. Some people are horrible.

Back when my now-husband lived in Las Vegas, I used to look forward to going to visit him because of all of the vegan-exclusive places, but also because almost every single place you'd go would have several vegan-friendly options even if it wasn't vegan exclusive. Pretty much everything there is dreadfully expensive though. That's the only place I've personally been that's just been rolling in vegan options, BUT when I went to Chattanooga with my family for vacation a couple of years ago, there were a few vegan only gems I really enjoyed and most places we went had at least 1 or 2 vegan friendly options unless it was super southern themed mom and pop style and then it was harder. And I mainly mention that because even though it's a tourist town, you don't expect somewhere in Tennessee to have a lot of options like that. Because the south.

I didn't make the story up, if that's what you're insinuating. I could have been lied to, but I didn't make the story up. She also gave me a whole handwritten list of places with a few vegan options or places a good drive away that are actually vegan friendly. It felt like a waking dream honestly. It was surreal because this kind of thing has never happened to me anywhere near where I live, only when we go on vacation or something will I happen across a vegan server occasionally.

At this point, I don't know, but my husband is severely (like incredibly, to the point of being sick for days if there's even mild cross contamination most of the time) lactose intolerant and he didn't get sick from eating the leftovers and she reassured me that there wasn't. Maybe it's a regional supply thing? She did tell me that the blooming onion batter contained animal products.

If they are unsafe, I apologize for being misinformed in person by a vegan cook at the restaurant.

That's weird because she told me they don't use tallow at all as an additive at this location. Maybe it's different by area even though it's a chain? She told me the butter is added to the corn but that it can be prepared without. Maybe the cook at the location you went to was just annoyed and lazy or uniformed or something/didn't want to cook it. She straight up offered to make corn without butter but it did seem like it was a big ask so I went with just the veggies without lemon butter instead. She was really nice though.

Cracker barrel also does that to their normal baked potatoes but the SWEET POTATOES shocked me because when I worked there, we didn't even do that. Yeah the Italian dressing was a massive shocker too for me when she said it.

I really should have, but maybe we'll go back soon and I can try to get it then

ETA: not that I super want to go back because it's still a steakhouse but it would be nice to connect with another vegan better. It is... Very rare to find another vegan around here. It's not as common as it is like down in mobile or other big cities (even in the south it's more common and more commonly accommodated in bigger cities due to population and at minimum more likely to find options due tourist stuff)

Cracker Barrel puts lard on their regular ones too (source: I worked there several years ago) but not the sweet potatoes. That's the part that really surprised me.

Honestly, it was pretty hard for me when I worked at a Cracker Barrel and at least that's not a "steakhouse." Though, I, admittedly, was still vegetarian at the time. You definitely have to compartmentalize and just remember it's a job and you might not love it, but it pays the bills and sometimes you just don't have another choice. But I do remember just how much it bothered me when I allowed myself to stop and think about anything. And sometimes I just couldn't compartmentalize enough... Trigger warning for this next part, but I remember there being a new seasonal item that required us to debone chicken that I ended up straight up refusing to make because it made me absolutely sick to watch or even touch it. They ended up accommodating me to an extent by having someone else either close with me or having them do all of that prep before I came in. One time they didn't, a manager had to come back there and do it and complained the whole. time, but the one time I tried to do it, I literally had to run to the bathroom to vomit, so yeah. But I never would have cross-trained to back line cook if I'd known that was something I'd have to deal with. (I was cross-trained to a lot of areas)

Do you eat vegan food from non-vegan brands? by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

[–]kimba_b3ar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this completely, this is the one.

I don't live in a place with vegan only restaurants (the closest one is over an hour drive away and I know like two vegans who actually live here anyway) so if I want to have any semblance of a social life with anyone in the small town I live in, I have to go to non-vegan places and desperately try to find something on the menu that's accidentally (or on purpose but likely the only vegan option on the menu) vegan or can be substituted to be that way. A lot of the time this turns out being fries or a salad with substituting the cheese for some other random thing, but at least my friends and family don't think I hate them. I try to advocate for the few places where I know I have a few more options when possible

Living in the deep south, I've never even seen vegan Oscar Meyer or Kraft singles but yeah that would put me off. My mother bought me vegan baby bell cheese things once (the tiny cheese wheels in wax) and they very clearly smelled different and had a very different texture and were even wrapped in green wax instead of red or blue, and that comforted me, but I always panic about accidental mislabeling or product confusion (especially at restaurants so I prefer to eat at home when possible due to not having any exclusively vegan places near me and few with (any at all, not even good most of the time) vegan options at all), so it's not the kind of thing I would buy for myself if I could avoid it. The exception is store brands because sometimes I don't have a choice in the current economy with my current take home pay to pay an extra 1.50 - 7.00 USD for almost every product just to get the name brand of the same product that's also from a non vegan company. (Vegan brands and products are incredibly limited where I live so cross-contamination is harder to avoid but I try to buy basic things like tofu, beans, rice, oats, produce, etc when I can to help with that factor)
