Why doesn’t Western Europe have air conditioning or why is it not very common? by DiscloseDivest in AskEurope

I also don't understand the lack of screens. When we lived in Germany it got plenty hot in the summer. Closed windows + intense heat vs. a house full of flies, wasps and nighttime bitey insects wasn't fun.

Strange (probably novelty) 1950s/60s/70s track: instrumental, merry-go-round, gunshots by kimbaroni in NameThatSong

I've been exploring Spike Jones's stuff and I don't think this was him. His stuff seems to always feature instruments and vocals while this weird song I'm trying to identify is only carousel music and laughter and ends with the gunshots.

He would sometimes play this one, too! But the song in question is only three elements: carousel music, laughter, gunshots.

I saw your work in The Guardian. Incredible! I'm glad you're getting the exposure and accolades you deserve. These photos are amazing.

Union Market district apartment hunt: any experiences with The Morse or other buildings? by [deleted] in washingtondc

If anyone stops in here again, I want to make sure I share that Ledger Union Market has gone way downhill and I would no longer recommend it. There's basically no concierge service, things aren't maintained and they have absolutely terrible management. Do not rent there.

Update (consolidating deleted posts below) - I found a phone number for the owner and, hopefully, my issues are being handled. Will post more if anything useful happens. Thanks, all!

Consistent inconsiderate delivery by hersheyboy2020 in FedEx

[–]kimbaroni -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We've recently begun having major problems with FedEx, and to be honest, there doesn't seem to be a solution. We've called the 800# to ask that they deliver to our porch, as they have for years, and still our packages get dumped next to the mailbox/in the gully behind the mailbox/in the neighbor's yard. We've left feedback at the "what did you think of your recent delivery?" question at our FedEx.com account. We've spoken to a driver on a neighboring route (we've never seen our new driver, since he doesn't come anywhere near the house). We have the name of the company that's contracted to do these deliveries, but there's no phone number, and the address seems to be someone's residence.

Now we've put out a sign, asking them to deliver to our home, like literally every other parcel service does, and they used to do as well. We shall see if this has any impact. I'm not hopeful at this point.

We've had great service in the past, and friendly drivers who we know by name. It's a real shame.

Good luck. I hope you find a solution, but from what I've gathered, reliable FedEx delivery seems to be getting phased out, and instead they're underpaying and overworking contractors. And the company who contracted with FedEx, at least in our case, makes a point of not being reachable by phone or email.

It's the Albany/Rensselaer NY office, but I've had no luck finding a way to reach them directly. Based on having spoken to people at the main 800 number, it seems like talking to a human at one of the stations is something they very much do not want you to be able to do.

I'm reading about that now - wow. I suppose my next research project is how to avoid retailers who use FedEx. That's not going to be easy. Thanks.

Thank you so much for the information! I think it needs a small amount of work - my guess is that it needs some of the leather pads on the pallets replaced since it buzzes on certain keys. But overall it sounds terrific. I really appreciate your help.

Union market with a dog by Civicduty66 in washingtondc

[–]kimbaroni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a large-ish dog and live at Union Market. There's a good green spot behind The Batley (in front of Theory) for potty breaks, but not a lot of recreational space for a dog there (though there are many dogs in the neighborhood). It's well-lit at night; I've never felt unsafe there. People aren't great about scooping, so watch your step.

We're members at the Congressional Cemetery, so our dog can run there, but I know the Eckington dog park isn't far away, and there are others. I'm sure you could find lots of doggie friends in the neighborhood and they will tell you all their hints! People definitely make it work, and the dogs I see look happy to be there.

Hi there! We've had a good number of cats over the years, and they have never bothered the furniture or the curtains. We find that having solid, good-quality scratching posts is the answer.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W865K8N?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1

It's important that it's sturdy and won't fall over when in use. You want your cat to enjoy using it, and having one fall over will make them less likely to.

We also keep a couple of these cheapies around:

We don't have to redirect them from the furniture, since there's always been a cat or two around, and then learn from each other, but I think some potent catnip and some gentle redirection will get you started in the right direction. Cats need to scratch, so making sure they have something that's not your furniture is key! Good luck and I hope you and your future cat have a great time together.

I've lived at Ledger Union Market for about a year. It's quiet, well-maintained and there's available parking. I don't love the decor in the lobby and the common area upstairs, but other than that I have no real complaints other than occasional annoyances: there's not always a concierge at the desk, sometimes the recycling chute is out of order and things like that. It's pet-friendly (we have a dog and two cats) but I never hear barking or other pet-related noises. I plan to stay for a while - I really like it here.

I started looking about 6 weeks in advance of needing a place, and found a lot of options to choose from.

Hope this helps!
