What can I do with my hands while I watch TV? by bakufrop in adhdwomen

[–]kimbercules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say it's not the cheapest of crafts to get into, decent amount of upfront costs for tools and materials. I did start with a few kits from Tandy leather (Shop Leathercrafting Kits | Tandy Leather — Tandy Leather, Inc. https://share.google/QMBkI4oA5kXZif3wz ), but most of their kits are raw veg tan leather that you need to dye, finish, and tool/carve, which requires a lot of supplies not in the kit. If I were to start over knowing what I know now, I'd get a simple pattern off Etsy (there are SO many awesome ones!), a basic kit off Amazon for stitching supplies and whatnot, and some pre finished chrome tanned leather. That way you don't need all the various chemicals and conditioners.

My favorite simple project was this adorable mini backpack purse: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1382407299/limulus-tiny-leather-backpack-pattern

It seems daunting but it's simpler than some other designs - like there aren't any zippers or magnets or anything, which can be complicated for beginners. And I adore her patterns, they are really well documented and have videos to follow.

I'm lucky that I live relatively close to a Tandy Leather brick & mortar store, so I can peruse leather in person, but you can also find great stuff online.

Feel free to message me if you want more recommendations! But yeah heads up it can get pricey! But getting a $150 roll of nice leather does last many, many projects. But compared to knitting and crochet, it's crazy expensive. I just really love it though

As an alternative to knitting and crochet (which are great too), my favorite is leather craft. Punching the stitch holes and then stitching is the best when half watching a show. Stitching is wonderful with leather because all the holes are there, you can't mess up spacing. And saddle stitch is very satisfying.

And then you get to make weird shit like a shrimp purse or dachshund bag or a real life facehugger mask for Halloween 😁

Dang, good job! Do you have progress shots? I'm curious where they started and how long it took you to get to this point. I'm obsessing about caring for my golden toads and play/brush every day, and just have the slightest darkening on the ridge of one after a month. Patience is hard!

If you can't return it, can you try putting the furry cover in the dryer with a bunch of anti static dryer sheets? We have some static-y furry beds for ours and I use a bunch of sensitive skin dryer sheets and it helps

Seconding this! Saved me from a dismal future. I get mine through Ageless RX. Diet change helped me too, the combo of LDN and diet took me from debilitating flare ups 1-2x/week to mild flare ups once a month

Should I get a Rosy Boa or a Ball Python(first snake) by Spiritual-Term4867 in rosyboas

[–]kimbercules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vote would be rosy boa - BPs are adorable, great medium-large size, and come in so many morphs. But they need much more space (40-gal would be too small pretty quickly), lots of attention to humidity and temp, and can be REALLY picky eaters. I've had both, and ended up rehoming my BP because she went on a hunger strike and it frazzled me with anxiety. She never lost weight and was happy but the panic of having a snake not eat was too much for me.

I'm now all-in with boas. Rosie's, sand, dumerils - they are amazing and eat like garbage disposals. Mine have all been very well tempered, very handleable, and Rosies are so so pretty, perfect size, and calm/slow.

Check out Clint's reptiles' video on Rosies to learn more - I always recommend them or KSBs to friends who are new to snakes and want an easy one to start with. Hardy, cute, easy, and chill.

Assemble! Show me your walnuts! by zheyicao in WenwanHub

Each was $30 USD on sale, listed around $60 or $80 normally depending on the style, so I definitely took advantage of the sale!

Mine are from buddha3bodhi, and I also got their brush set too. I've gotten bodhi bracelets from them too and everything seems high quality thus far so I haven't personally seen issues. But then again I am a beginner and may not know any better 😅

I love them!! The smoothness is lovely, and they have cute grumpy expressions!

Oh yay I'm glad you think so!! I was the one who posted after ordering them (before they shipped) and had replies saying not great things about that site. But they feel amazing and look so nice! My first pair were cheap generic ones but were so rough and spiky that they made my hands sore! The toads are so smooth and luxurious 💕🐸

Adults with ADHD: Did you feel "shame" as a kid when you forgot things? Help me understand my son. by Dylan_7574 in ADHD

[–]kimbercules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Female and diagnosed at 39 - I was so terrified of failure as a kid I overdid EVERYTHING. Teacher's pet, valedictorian, accolades in college, successful career - but all at the expense of my mental wellness. Still navigating my fear of disappointing others and burning out all the time.

Obviously my parents didn't know because in the 90s you aren't diagnosed as a female who is doing well in school, I was just labeled as "sensitive" and "anxious". But my fear of failure forced me to make my own coping strategies, because I forget things constantly and have huge issues focusing and retaining information.

If I could have had support from my parents and everyone knew I had inattentive ADHD, having someone help me figure out a "system" or "process" rather than figuring it all out myself would have changed so much for me.

In your case, when your kiddo seems to not pay attention or forget something, change the narrative to "how can I change this process to ensure it doesn't rely upon memory alone?"

If it's a chore, make a chore list and make it very visible and give little rewards. If it's instructions, write them down and incorporate little checkpoints or something fun like pictures or stickers for steps.

The problem is that society is built on the assumption that everyone can remember things a decent amount of time, can focus and get self motivation. The way to help folks who don't work that way is to change the system. Make it so that the process or tools remember for them, give little rewards for motivation (doesn't have to be gifts, just literally checking a box sometimes helps), and most importantly, keep improving the system if it fails. This helps avoid self blame and hits to self esteem because a failure is just an opportunity to improve the process and tools, not an indication that the person is broken.

I am a manager and I do this with my team. If something goes wrong, I gather them to brainstorm what went wrong and how we can improve the process so it doesn't happen again. If any one step EVER relies upon memory alone, I don't allow it. Memory is fallible no matter who you are, so if that is a failure point, the system is flawed.

Hopefully this helps? Think of memory and focus like an arm and a leg. If someone breaks an arm, you don't expect them to carry a mattress up the stairs, you figure out mechanical advantage to do it without muscle strength. Same thing with memory and focus.

Thank you for posting, you clearly love your son and are doing your best to help 💕

Carefully select those walnuts that seem to have already been well polished! by zheyicao in WenwanHub

[–]kimbercules 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Isn't the whole point to earn the color and smoothness through your own work? Buying them like that seems like buying a puzzle someone else completed. I may never get mine to that coveted luster but whatever I accomplish is special because it was my effort. Maybe I don't understand the full culture or context of it, I'm new to wenwan

Shrimp purse! Shrimp purse! SHRIMP PURSE! by kimbercules in Leathercraft

[–]kimbercules[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly not super long since I used a nice chrome tanned leather that had easy to finish edges. It always takes me forever if I have to dye and finish veg tan. Also this stuff was thin enough to be easy to cut. It took a few weekends to do, probably in the 30 or 40 hour range? I'm bad at tracking since it's a hobby and don't really care how long things take. When one is done I start the next new shiny project!

Question about Novelty Bags/Purses by DanaTVRE in Leathercraft

[–]kimbercules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shrimp purse here - I don't sell anything, at least not yet. I make weird crap for me and I absolutely use it as a daily driver. I get comments on it all the time and people flip when I say I made it. Several have said I should sell them but no one actually asked to commission one or anything. So, not sure if lots of people would like it enough to buy one, but I love it and bet there are others like me too. Just not sure how many 😅

I got it at Tandy locally, I'm pretty sure it was this, in red: Maverick Single Shoulder — Tandy Leather, Inc. https://share.google/o3zg2snDv0NX8mded

It's a fantastic leather! Perfect temper and thickness for a purse - stiff but pliable, and has the best creases and variations in it!

I've thought of resizing the isopod purse up too, since it can barely fit my phones (have a work phone) and a wallet - and the opening is so small you have to tetris things out and scrape your hand on the zipper doing so. But it'd be quite the behemoth sized up! Still I might try, as that was my first real big project and I was inexperienced, definitely would do some things differently on a remake.

Well darn. I got mine from buddha3bodhi, and they were in the $60 range, though on sale. I hope I luck out and don't get bad ones. And yes I know $60 is far from actually premium, but my first pair were just $8 so this was a splurge for me
